Great Video Justin. A quick one, when importing an object (In my case, a kitchen set) it won't 'stick' to the wall i want it on. Whenever I orbit the model it disaligns. Locking the object isn't helping either. Kindly assist.
In your video you say that the first walls are not in the same group as the image but by default, following the instructions exactly, my line function is making lines in the same group. When I try to make a new group , the image disappears. How can I start making my walls as a new group without loosing the image?
hi Justin, i really like the videos, but is seems strange to tell us (in the videos and comments) that you want to know about issues/questions, but then ignore genuine questions
With this video, after many failed attempts, I've finally been able to make a good model of a floor plan! Thanks Justin. Again, all the concepts are explained in an easy to understand way, at the right pace.
I picked up on everything you taught in this video, with a few rewinded repeated sections, hehe. Thank you for your clear presentation, much appreciated!
One of the BEST instructional channels on RUclips IMHO, thank you so much Justin. Found your channel last night and it inspired me to try this program again. You are making this easier than I thought. KUDOS Buddy. I'll be watching every video, as I plan to build myself my retirement tiny home up here in Ontario :) TY again.
Thank you very much for taking your time to make a tutorial like this. Unfortunately it doesn't work anymore, probably outdated. I was struggling but after reading the commends I've seen other people couldn't scale too.
Hi Justin - the ability to toggle between guide and measure for the tape measure tool is disabled in Sketchup Free. It’s a widely reported bug. Is there a way of creating a 3D floor plan without using the tape measure tool?
Landscape and terrain are a bit tricky in the online version because I don't believe there is a sandbox set of tools (it's an extension in the desktop version)
Hey Justin, why do you need to explode the imported image? Does it have to do with the Free version? E. g. in Make '17 I can just work on the imported image or is there something I have overlooked?
Thank you so much! We are hoping to build in the future and the plans we like don't have 3-d renderings. I was able to follow right along with you to start building the plan we like in SketchUp so we are able to visualize it better than the flat plan and exterior elevations!
Can you share the image you use in this video in the description of the video? It would be helpful for us to follow along. Thank you in advance @TheSketchUpEssentials
Great video, just wondering when you have your model done. How do remove the original jpg image you used as a guide so you don’t see it anymore? Can you just unclick the layer on/off from view? Thks
Thanks! I’m struggling to annotate a photograph of a room’s interior in order to create a floor plan from a snapshot of the room. I can’t get axes to snap to an interior corner. Can you make a tutorial about how to snap axes to a photo in sketch up free web app?
Hi, it won't let me scale the plan at all. I follow the steps in the video above but it won't let me scale for some reason. Any fixes are appreciated thank you
Great video I found it to be quite helpful I'm looking forward to the next video for the doors and windows thank you for explaining it in a simple and easy way to understand
I thought it's a different method but it's just the same as tracing and using click points. There should be a much faster way, for example using object recognition to identify lines.
like some others, I can't get the scale to work. I've rewatched it 5 times and made at least that many attempts. I insert the image, explode it, group it, then use the tape measure to show the spacing while manually entering the distance... it just draws a guide line and i don't the popup asking to confirm the resize
@@Antisfunny in case you didn't see the reply in the other thread... he wrote "You might try this video that gets into the process a bit more in-depth - ruclips.net/video/YRC1gg4tWx8/видео.html - sometimes people get into create guide mode by accidentally tapping control. from all of the features sketchup free lost that ive noticed so far from these tutorials this is the one that makes me the saddest alongside, not being able to edit materials anymore
I keep coming back to your tutorials Justin, thank you. Im just starting on the Free online for my own residential project, but the scaling tool is a head scratcher for me. Ive got my drawing imported and tried to scale it to the right measurements but its not working. Every time I type a value in inches it disappears and defaults to the original measurement of the drawing. What am I doing wrong?
i tried scale it according to my image... but its not asking to scale as in the video.. i did explode the image then made group... followed same steps done it twice or thrice but its not scaling..
I was going nuts with this, i couldn't get me 'face' to appear and offset the walls once i'd drawn the lines. Just worked out it's because I was drawing around a bay window at angles that weren't co-planar. It's a 5-sided bay, not a smooth arc. How do i get around this?
nice work, i am very happy with the tutorials, can one make a floor plan with a different software like Revit and use it to building my 3d elevations, what's the work of sketch up layout and style builder?
I'm a new user running Sketchup 2024. I'm certain there have been many changes since your excellent video tutorials from 4 years ago. However I'm following your instructions on scaling a .jpg image file from existing photos of floor plans. But I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, because it's not doing as expected. After I tape measure a specific dim from the exploded image file, I single click, drag the measuring tool to the other point (without clicking), enter the 24' measurement and hit return, nothing happens. The hint in the lower left box says "Click to create a guide. / Ctrl = Toggle Create". Nowhere have I been able to locate what these mean, thru forums, manuals etc. And no popup screen shows up asking me if I want to resize the active group. Can you kindly advise what I'm missing?
One frustration I keep running into is how you are keeping the IMAGE of the floor plan down when you bring the walls up...? The writing and everything doesn't stay on the "floor" rather the image text is raised with the walls. How the heck are you doing that? I've rewinded several times and watched a couple other videos of yours but it doesn't seem to be cooperating. Could it perhaps be the image I'm using that is not allowing me to do that?
@@Thesketchupessentials thanks so much for the reply, I noticed that in your ‘21 update video AND I wasn’t hovering over the wall lines when I was using push pull, rather I was clicking on the center of the room and therefore bringing up the floor. Key piece of info. Thanks so much for the quick reply!
Hello, I imported a high res floor plan but the view in Sketchup Free is quite blurry (not so before importing it). Same effect as shown in this video. The walls' lines are not precise. Is there a way to increase the definition of the view? There is no detailed setting menu in the Free version so I cannot find it. It would be important to be able to precisely copy the floorpan. thanks!
ok, i just uploaded a layout image like you did on the first part of this tutorial, but after that i can't seem to find a way to manipulate the view to make the layout image straight so i can do the next step you did as well which was to scale the image right..help!
@@Thesketchupessentials so after i uploaded my image on an untitled project and dragging it from the origin point i tried to turn the view like u did at 1:23 of ur video and all i get is a rectangle forming as if you’re selecting an area of your screen??? hope i explained it better

On the fence so far with how useful your videos are for a beginner, which I am. Often you gloss over how to do simple things and they take me forever to find. For example I used the hide to see what walls I missed then it took me forever to get my picture back up which I finally managed. You click on your outline and it all somehow hooks together but mine is all separate lines. I agree with people here as well as you, you don't want to repeat removing a window 4 times but if you can go over the first one slowly....Isn't there some way to layer the base photo then the exterior walls then the interior walls so I can find them as well as see if any are missing by easily toggling between them? I'm not sure I will get then hang of it before i quit. I appreciate you trying to make helpful videos but maybe I need more remedial steps. I think sometimes you utilize keyboard shortcuts to do things and then one cannot see how to do it if you aren't familiar with the shortcut?

Wow.. many thanks!! Best tutorial I found until now! Was very good to understand, sometimes little bit too fast but very good

If you know the wall thicknesses then you can add these and the internal dimensions to get fairly accurate overall measurements.
