    He loved not wearing his shirt! Still, if I looked like him, I'd never wear a shirt! Great colorature of course. I saw him as Scarpia at the Royal Opera House in the early 90s, where he showed his legendary adaptable voice, from coloratura to power! Love him!

    June Anderson is the best Semiramide ever, together with dame Joan Sutherland. As far as I know, Callas did not record the whole opera but may be I am wrong. Samuel Ramey is the best Assur ever. Both are absolutely stunning. No one can sing like them these days.

    • @alioffe4321
      @alioffe4321 3 года назад +6

      Unfortunately Callas never sang the role in its entirety, which is a real tragedy because this is ultimate Rossini. However, she sang bel raggio couple times. 1956 version is the most secure rendition although there is a later version which is still quite good. According to my notes, she sang the aria in 1942, which is sadly lost to us. Sutherland is otherworldly in this role, though. At times, her reading doesn't sound Rossinian at all. She takes too many liberties with the score and adds tons of stuff. But, it is like a dream. No one can outsing Joan as Semiramide. NO ONE!

    Samuel Ramey had such a magnificent cavernous beauty of tone, like an ancient string bass sliding through an endless line of seamlessly linked legati... And the music is extraordinary. One could close one's eyes and think one was listening to Verdi, not Rossini

    This is so golden age! I can imagine myself hearing a performance like this one with Rossini himself in the audience applauding loudly. Ramey's coloratura is stunning here and elsewhere, and Anderson's technique is so secure that her voice seems never to have failed her. There’s a video of the final scene of Daphne on RUclips that shows what she can do even in her sunset years. Astounding!

    I love Ramey's clarity. His voice is so fresh, even on the lowest notes (which are magnificent. Especially the last one). And June is one of my favourites when it comes to Semiramide. She really has the balance that I like: beautiful voice, presence and acting. She may play safe with her roles, singing etc., but this particular role she handled beautifully.

  • @jmiller05
    @jmiller05 5 лет назад +6

    Anderson was always a bit like a mini-Sutherland (with a more stable middle voice and considerably less agility). Beautiful singing here, and she actually tries to sing the low passages, even though she really wasn't comfortable in that tessitura.
    Love the dignified, cavernous sound of Ramey too. Very much in sync with Rossini's very particular rhythm too.

    • @manolis.799
      @manolis.799 5 лет назад +2

      I always thought her and Sutherland were similar too. Even in the looks department sometimes.

    • @LohengrinO
      @LohengrinO  5 лет назад +2

    • @jmiller05
      @jmiller05 5 лет назад +4

      Lohengrin O Apparently she met Sutherland once and it was uncanny how similar their big jaws were. I think Sutherland quipped something like: "That's where the E-flats are kept".

    • @ThomasDawkins88
      @ThomasDawkins88 5 лет назад +2

      Anderson lacks Sutherland's purity in the top register and gets a little strident at times, but I love her as Marie in Fille du régiment and her Gilda is rather nice too. And of course Cunegonde!

    • @jmiller05
      @jmiller05 5 лет назад +3

      Thomas Dawkins Hardly anyone had Sutherland's brightness in the upper register- it was a phenomenon.
      Anderson was a great singer though. Maybe not as naturally talented as others, but a great technique and brilliant produced sound.

  • @NLidar

    Ramey is just magnificent here. He is crystal clear and so is his diction, and also resonant and deep. What I like most about his voice is that it is not veiled, dragging and weight-y, but precise and light, which is rare for low voiced male singer. As for June, I've always liked her timbre and vibrato, and her fully-bodied, full-voiced and well supported highs. This is definitely not vocally superior to Joan's (it is impossible to be vocally better than Joan in Semiramide) but it is so muuuuch more exciting than Joan's.
    (Although, doesn't June have a little problem with the tempo here? seems she is slow and the orchestra is waiting for her)
