FWIW. Note that the darker the hive the more bearding.... there is a reason hives are usually white. The smaller hives have less space to the heat thus it builds up faster thus they are too hot even though they are white.... If you would take your telescoping cover and off set it 1 inch you will now have air flow over the very hottest part of the hives as well as take the radiant heat from the sun off the boxes. good luck.
It would be interesting to see what the internal temperature of the hive is on some of these hot days and evenings. Compare white to brown, with upper vent to without upper vent.
