Thanks @@gregporter4766 , this method works really well. We use this at our North Woods Camp as well. Cedar chips are the answer and don’t be shy to use a lot especially in the warmer months. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for tackling this dirty topic! I like this idea, as I also have clay. Also the wife was worried about spiders and what not hanging out in the dark hole. At least with this, the back is easily accessible to get rid of any of those critters.
Nice dry toilet! I highly recommend The Humanure Handbook by Joe Jenkins if you haven't read it yet. He also has a youtube channel under Joe Jenkins. Helped us a bunch to get our sanitation system going since we don't have septic or sewage where we reside.
I've composted my poo for many years and used it to grow vegetables for vegans . I've got it down on how to do it. I use black soldier Fly maggots also to create excellent soil compost.
I have one with cedar shake.I cover with ash from the firepit and then a layer of cedarshake. I dont have grass clippings or grass. Will green leaves do the same? I was also thinking i can empty my bucket into the burn barrel.
Thanks for the video. I got a few questions for you. I long does it roughly take for the bucket to get half full and how many people are using it how often (like daily, only weekends or such). I was also wondering how long it roughly takes for the last one to get decomposed. Thanks in advance.
Frederik, thanks for watching. Using it mainly on the weekends, The container may be half full after a month. We tend to use plenty of wood chips so they comprise most of the volume. Our composting bin loses volume as it decomposes, so we just keep adding to it. Hope that helps
Weird ? But I wonder if I put a manure composting near the vegie composting if it would keep the bears away? We have a difficult time with it attracting bears in our town
We have never tried that. Years ago we used lime. I never did like that. It didn’t reduce the smell much. The cedar does a great job of reducing the smells, so we have stuck to that. Thanks for watching!
Nice setup, one question I have is does the urine go into the same bucket or did you drill any small holes for the urine to go into the ground. I know when the urine and poo mix is when it starts to stink much more, Thank you!
Hey Siegel, yes I have a number holes in the bottom. I also have stone under the container to help drain the liquid away. The use of cedar chips after every use helps keep any odor to a minimum. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing? Is this outhouse utilized full time (24 hrs/day 7 days/week)? If not, how often? How many people in your family are continually using it? How long approximately does it take to fill 1/2 of the 30 gallon bucket? We need a full-time outhouse for our one income (a very modest one at that!), homeschooling family of 7 in Nova Scotia, Canada (harsh winters). We won't have access to wood chips and could never afford to purchase them for full-time outhouse use. What could we use as a free or very inexpensive substitute? Would you recommend this type of outhouse for our full-time use and in our climate? Thanks, so much! 🙂
We have never cleaned out the composting bin. it just breaks down enough that there always seems to be room for the next time we empty our outhouse. We even add leaves and sometimes grass clippings to help in the composting. We've never had issues with smells either. Thanks for watching!
Hey bud, great idea! I do want to give it a go but my only question is have you used it in the winter?… that’s the only time I would be using mine as I have a wall tent for the winter. Curious if you’ve tried it
Hey Jason , absolutely it works in the winter! Use lots of cedar chips to keep things loose because it will freeze. That way you can dump it in your composting area if it gets full. Thanks for watching!
I did not put a vent in. I decided to wait for a while to see if I actually need one. After four years it seems to be fine without it. Thanks for watching!
I understand you can use leaves or any light brown matter to help with odor and keeping things dry. Im wondering about the flies. I just set up an diy 4' deep doggy dooley which has a secure fly proof lid. You don't smell much at all.
Good job I'm looking for alternative Out house ideas As the town I live in Has old bylaws stating a no repair no replace septic tank Claus stating u must hook up to toe Town city sewer system. That's gonna cost @ 8 ,000.00 to 15,000.00 Dollars. We still have our own well. So will have to start thinking of a new plan Or temp plan while under going reconstruction.
Sorry I do not have plans, I usually just build things as I go . I did do a video on the build but there was nothing specific just an overview of the project ruclips.net/video/RAM7KYLouGQ/видео.html Thanks for watching!
We don’t try to stop them, they just don’t go in there. There really is not to many snakes around here. Garder and Milk snakes mostly Thanks for watching!
I hate to be a pest, but I have lots of questions 😅 how close is this to your dwelling? What kind of wiping material do you use, and does it break down as well? And I saw another another comment about drain holes for pee - could (would 😂) you elaborate on that? Thanks for posting such helpful content!
Hey thanks for the questions. we drilled approximately a dozen 3/4 inch holes in the bottom of the plastic container. We didn't want to have a chance of there being a large liquid build up. Any excess liquid is allowed to escape through the bottom into a bed of stone. This is a pretty dry system , most if not all the liquid is absorbed by the chips. We use regular toilet paper. When the container gets half full we dump it in the dedicated composting bin, most of the decomposition takes place there. There is very little smell with this system as long as you use plenty of cedar chips after each use. Thanks for watching!
@@mytwelveacres3071Had the same 2 questions. I'm thinking of using a little smaller bin to make emptying easier and maybe a urine diverter to be able to empty it a safe distance and water it into the ground occasionally. Idk but this is great.
I've had the opportunity to deal with a number of outhouses that used lime. After using cedar chips I would definitely say I prefer them over the lime. Thanks for watching!
I did not use any plans for this outhouse. We just figured things out as we built it. There are probably plans out there that you could adapt to your needs though. Thanks for watching!
What about those tiny, tiny flies that infiltrate your container? I see the 3" gap on your trap door that you r&r your 30 gal container. I used one of those hospital toilets (looks like wheelchair with no wheels) outside backporch, tiny flies, Lysol did nothing when I sprayed it on them, so I brought it inside same deal, it bugged the sh** outta me (pun intended)
@@bobbytogores4902 We really have never had a fly problem. We do make sure to cover everything with the cedar chips, sometimes to an extreme I’m afraid. I truly believe that is the best way to avoid many issues with this design. Use lots of cedar! Thanks for watching!!
