The lyrics to this song were written by a talented young Motown lyricist named Rodger Penzabene. He also wrote lyrics for Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye, as well as the Temptations. While working on this album, Rodger found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Rodger was in a bad place. he couldn't stand the pain, but he couldn't stop loving his wife either. He literally poured his heart, soul, and pain into this song. It was released on December 21, 1967 and went on to become one of The Temptations greatest hits but Rodger never saw that. At 23, Rodger Penzabene took his own life on New Years Eve, 1967. He never got to see that so many people could relate to his pain and heart ache. Rest easy, Rodger, some of us remember you.

@@quintonhill1011 The lyrics of this mournful song about a heartbroken man whose woman had just left him were penned by Motown staff writer Roger Penzabene. The lyricist had just learnt that his wife was cheating on him and in his sorrow and pain, Penzabene penned both this and its follow-up "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)." Tragically the distraught Penzabene committed suicide barely a week after the single's release.

My granny passed away just a few days ago. The last time I saw her, three weeks before she passed, I asked her if she liked music. She said “not ever since I got sick.” Then, just moments later, she asked us to put on The Temptations. My dad put this song on and jokingly said “there’s your man, David Ruffin!” 😂 She watched silently, sat up in her bed, as if she were remembering happier times. This was the last song we listened to together. Rip Granny 🕊 💕

Motown tend to have quite busy arrangements with the voices in the mixed, I've not got a problem with this but when it's a vocal group such as the temptations with their brilliant voices and arrangements it's great to hear them above the instruments sometimes you don't realise just how good they're on the records it's there but can be difficult to take in.

He was a phenomenal talent and even in the most beautiful songs you could hear his pain and trials and know he's endured some tough things yet he's entertaining so effortlessly. Imagine how much longer her could've lived his life had there been decent managers, business executives, counselors, family support...Just resources that are available now that wasn't available then. Who knows if it would've made a difference but at least he would've had options, choices. It's so sad the way so many entertainers of that era died at such young ages. David Ruffin is and was one of the greatest vocalist and performers of all time in my opinion!

David Ruffin just one of the outstanding voices of my youth. Blessed with a talent most of us could only dream of having. Hearing of the complicated life he chose as it was happening was like watching a tornado destroy a house or a serious car wreck. Morbidly you can't stop looking and at the same time you hope everything is ok. Unfortunately for him and us it wasn't. This song is brilliant in composition and David Ruffin owned it in his delivery. I honestly don't think this song can be done any better.....ever!
