Good video. I have a brera (in the same color btw) and I recognize the issues, like the broken air vents, the power steering noise due to the little filter, the weird parking sensors and the tail light condensation. The thing that drove me absolutely crazy for a while was that the start button didn't work 9 out of 10 times. Replaced the mass cables, battery, starter, but nothing worked. Eventually my mechanic put an extra relay in between and the issue was finally solved. But all in all its quite a reliable car and she never let me down.
Very good info on these problems, so many sound so familiar! But I agree, these are generally very reliable and tough cars. Alfa did a fantastic effort with this 939 series back in the day.
If the power steering pipe leaks, replace it immediately. The fluid gets in the alternator and kills it... It happened to me on the 159. Replacing the alternator took a week because of the amount of labour involved and alternators being unavailable. For all this time the front end was disassembled and the front right corner standing on a jack. As I finished all the work and drove out, the windshield cracked from the tensions developed in the car body+a tiny stone mark in the glass. So a minor leak became a major series of repairs. The leak is probably always on that short rubber section of the pipe.
One another thing besides the springs snapping is that the spring seats rust and tear off from the shock absorber. The rubber between the seat and the spring pockets salty water very well, the metal is 3,5mm thick but it becomes thin as paper where the water stays.
The upper/lower arm ball joints are almost bone dry, especially on the aftermarket control arms. But it is possible to drill and tap 6mm threads to the ball joint caps for grease nipples.

Brake sensor failure was an common issue with 159/brera/spider that I encountered with my spider. The plunger mechanism behind the brake pedal would fail and show a tcs fault, but would leave the brake lights on permanently.

I have the 2.2jts version of this car and I love it......so far! I have had it checked out by Autolusso in Bournemouth and she is in VGC. I have had power flex bushes fitted which have made all the difference to how she drives. The engine tray went on the same pile as my 159 one. I have spent a fair bit getting her up to scratch but it has been well worth it. The hood was done before I bought the car and it still has 18months warranty on it. I never take it out when it is raining so hopefully the roof ECU will be safe. How do I get to the ECU, put the roof so far up? Great video by the way.
Good honest review. It would be a bit off putting if you were considering buying one. But I can say that its not the maintenance nightmare portrayed here. Like many Alfas of that vintage preventative maintenance makes the ownership much more enjoyable. However its not an everyday car and I'm sure no one would ever consider it as such.
Nice guide, to bad that you didn't make this guide earlier ;) especially the hood part (mine spider had mould problem, unfortunately computer got wet and repair cost me alot....)
Regarding 2.4, you forgot about thermostat, its breake down in every AR after 10years, but cost to replace it is not so big :)

Should have mentioned the biggest pig of a job - cracked cylinder heads on these 2.4 engines - I know quite a few people with Breras and 159s and they all had their cylinder heads crack at some point. I would absolutely go for the 1750tbi or 2.2, or 2.0 JTDM if you want the diesel. The 3.2 V6 is a proper gas guzzler but without the sophisticated feel and noise of a proper Busso...

Perhaps some spacers could be fitted for the undertrays or something? Just I know engineers, designers, whoever don't put them on cars for no reason.
that can be done but your better without them rather than leaving them on

Its under the torneo cover under the carpet. Put it in a siplock bag.

How do I make sure that the hood ECU hasn't failed?
There is one on sale for cheaps marked - window failure. Explanation that roof won't operate due to window mechanism failure.
Is it really the window? Or should I suspect the roof ECU?

Very good review, why is the 2010 automatic 2.4 Jtdm has a 200 Hp instead of 2010 Hp , how many automatic 2.4 jtdm were sold in Uk ?
Just depends on the year. 2007 on was 210bhp.

First off, no Alfa Romeo, especially a Spider should be the home for a tractor engine, leave that to the German brands.
I owned a Brera 2.2 S for 4 years and 65k miles, my wife has a 2.2 JTS Spider which we have owned for 10 years and now has 75k miles, it is the upgraded MY 08 version.
To ensure you dont get water in the ECU well, never use a car wash or jet wash. If you have just bought a Spider check the ECU well soon as you can. Another thing you should check periodically, also on the 159 vehicles, is the drain in the scuttle on the drivers side, it can block up with debris, and then you can get water in the foot well, but it is easy to clear.

How come you don't mention the number one killer of the 2.4 JTDM, cracked cylinder heads? :D Every person I know that had one of those engines (including myself) ended up with a cracked head

I wouldn't buy a diesel now in the UK. I've driven the 2.2 petrol version of this and also the 3.2 Brera. I would be interested to know which petrol engine you consider to be the best? 1.75 turbo sounds interesting? Also, you didn't mention the gearbox? I heard they can be a problem. Great video though. This is a car I have often thought of buying.
1750 is the most reliable of the bunch. My 3.2 Brera didn't gave me too much troubles during last 5 years. Previous owner though had to replace timing chains. Sounds daunting but considering the price these go for that did not and would not put me off. It's not difficult job for a good mechanic but a time consuming one. Manual box is F40 made in Sweden, stout but not rebuildable (no parts available).
