About Blur:
Blur were formed in 1989 by Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree and signed with Food/EMI the same year. Announcing their arrival with debut album Leisure in 1991, Blur continued to revolutionise the sound of English popular music with second release Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993). Five successive UK #1 albums followed - with Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995) helping to propel the band to mass popularity in the UK and beyond. The eponymous Blur was released in 1997 and seventh album Think Tank (2003) was Blur’s first as a three-piece after the temporary departure of founding guitarist Graham Coxon.
Twenty one years after the release of their debut album, 2012 saw Blur 21: The Box, the band's body of work compiled and gathered together into one box. Their most recent release as a four-piece, the critically acclaimed chart-topping album The Magic Whip (2015), started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013.

This video feels ageless. Hard to imagine this was 1995.
edit: ageless meaning that the video has held up well since the 90s - especially in comparison to other videos of that era. it’s creative, impactful and the concept could be used today to the same effect.

I saw blur at Hyde Park in London and my best friend and my wife wanted to leave just before the end of the concert to beat the traffic and I said absolutely no way becauce The Universal is yet to be played. As soon as I said that the violins started playing for the beginning of this song and I got goosebumps. Utterly epic song

I don’t think a music video has ever matched a song as well as this one. Ever. It’s perfect in every way. Damon’s pantomime the set, the clockwork orange references. The song and the imagery just compliment each other so well. I am going to say it. It’s the best music video ever made.
Heavy claim! Personally I think Mercury Rev 'Holes' has a super perfect video to accompany it. It's all a matter of opinion of course 🙂
I must not understand the song... or the video. I don't mean that sarcastically. I heard it the the other day and thought it waa a song of inspiration I watched the video amd it creeped me out.. well i still like it the song. I'll look for the lyrics and see if I can make some sense of it

Notice that Graham Coxon is barely in the video for The Universal.
He wasn't in a good place at the time, didn't like the song and on the day of filming was several hours late. When he did turn up he told his colleagues he would be staying no longer than an hour.
Most of the shots you see of Graham, it's not actually him.

Wow! Reading the comments I was surprised that not many people got the ClockWork Orange reference! The one eye in black liner, they even popped up the hat a few times, and made all the right sexual references. And when someone says this is the worse Blur song, really, THE worse. I love Blur, but I can name other songs that aren't that great.I do love the priest lunging at the poor guy next to him at the end of the video! Great! Now I want to watch ClockWork Orange again.
why don't you read the book instead?
Your absolutely right. I will read the book. Books are so much better than the movie, unless it's the Twilight series! LOL.
You're not alone. ..RUclips views are young. ..of COURSE it's a reference to ACO..and if the kids haven't read it and/or seen it, they might do now...
Cult classics are the weird yet powerful books and movies that imprint a generation. They often step outside the box of societies measurement of normal but they have a way of surviving many more generations. I had my son watch all of the cult classics I could. He read some, but being a bookworm he was busy reading books that will be cult classics of his time, and I'm sure he will pass them on to his children.
Sultry, I raise a proverbial toast to you!! I'm blessed, at 40, to have had a very classic and Classical education: it was started at home, reading.
