    This movie generated a lot of press when it came out. It might seem silly now, but watching the trailer as a kid, I wondered if it was live-action or not. Nowadays, super-realistic CGI is commonplace, but in 2001 it was unheard-of. There was serious talk that Aki Ross, the female lead in the movie, would become a "star" in her own right, and act alongside people in live-action movies.

      The CGI is actually good, it's just the designs are bad. The design and the environments in Shrek/Monsters Inc is more interesting to watch. Everything there is so much more expressive and fun to look at, this though is just CGI people talking in closed rooms, something you could have made look better by just doing it in real life. The main benefit from doing this would've been having monsters who feel like they're in the same universe as the humans, instead of having CGI monstrosities alongside real people, but they didn't even do that.

It was just so antiseptic and had none of the earned emotions of a FF game. Also, my friends and I all thought it's design was all too influenced by FF8, a very mediocre entry between the all time great 7 and the all time underrated 9

    "it's literally the cheapest option"
    except no it's not, because rendering transparent/translucent, PLUS emissive objects, which affect global illumination, is literally combination of the two most expensive options, performance-wise.

    • @Achlucide
      @Achlucide 4 года назад +39

      I might be wrong but I don't think their renders have any reflection/refraction information. It literally just looks like the default "glow" material in Houdini with the "inverted" turned on. So it's actually a pretty cheap render! As for the illumination they could very well have used animated lights to recreate it, or just a specular indirect map coming from the glow material :)

    • @KillahMate
      @KillahMate 4 года назад +50

      That would be the case now, or at any point within the last 10-15 years, but this is 2001 - they were a) almost certainly a separate pass that was then composited in with translucency, and b) _certainly_ not affecting global illumination because it wasn't yet close to being used in film renderers - the lighting would have all been faked by hand, including lighting from emissive objects.

    • @thekiss2083

    Fun Fact:
    Square Enix was pushing for a new form of actors and actresses. Basically, they were attempting to make Hatsune Miku before Miku. Their plan was to promote the CGI actors so that all future movies would use these actor models.

    Then my older brother came back from the military in 2003 and introduce me to the video games. he first show me kingdom hearts and explained the final fantasy characters in the game, then told me about final fantasy 10, then final fantasy 8, then final fantasy 7.etc...

    16:55 - One of the reasons Pixar decided to make their first ever fully-CGI movie about Toys was that the technology couldn't yet render realistic-looking people. As you ca see in Toy Story 1, the humans look really creepy and everyone's skin looks like plastic. So might as well go with comical toy designs that ARE supposed to be made of plastic, to cut down on the Uncanny Valley Effect.

    This movie exists simply for he technical feats they achieved. The main technical aspect was the hair on the main character and how it was the most lifelike reproduction of hair in computer animation to date. Individual strands were all rendered on independent paths to allow for more lifelike flow in movement. The money did not go into the script or rest of the production. Donald Sutherland got a huge paycheck if I remember correctly, and then it died a quick death at the theater.
