A little context for the FZ fans unfamiliar with Phish: Trey and the boys used to play this regularly when they were a bar band in the Burlington in the late 80's. Then, as they started growing and touring the country, Phish would shelve it, sometimes for whole years and tours, but they would perform it on occasion thru the 90's when their chops were the best and their playing the tightest. This particular performance is the first time they played it in 10 years. It should also be noted that Phish tours with an active repetoire of nearly 200 original songs and covers, with several hundred more in reserve (i.e. they have played some time in the past) for occasional "bust outs" like this one. The benefit of this approach for both fans and the band is that no concert is ever the same - always something novel. The drawback is that sometimes lyrics are forgotten, wrong notes are played, parts flubbed, and cues and changes are missed. Busting this out after a decade while playing at MSG was a treat for the fans and an hommage to FZ. All but the newest fans knew the song. The energy looks incredible, though it would've been even better if they nailed it like they used to in the past.
They played it occasionally between the 10 years you said they didn't. I just listened to them play it in Vegas in 96 5 minutes ago on RUclips. Just sayin'
I about fell down the stairs at MSG when they played the first notes of this song. So glad to hear it played live again, even if not in the best form.❤️
First time they'd played it live in ten years. Considering that and how complex of a composition that is, I'm more than impressed. If you don't like it, don't go to shows...more tickets for the rest of us.
The 2:06 section sounds great but 1 note at 2:08. Some earlier parts are hacked. I know Zappa fans like myself, are aghast when some notes are "jazzed" or entirely missing but it's a great effort and definitely a treat for Phans. Zappa rehearsed his band 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. AlsoZappa's standard was so high that none of the US unionized orchestras could play his music. He had to dumb down his scores. His music wasn't fully realized until Ensemble Moderne from Germany came along.
To the people complaining about how Trey sounds- I mean you're not wrong...but at this particular show, what was more relevant was the fact that the song was even busted out. They hadn't played it in a long time. If you wanna hear a version with good Trey, search for some of the early 90s versions
It's a Zappa song Ej420, you were correct. I wish I had just gotten my ticket for under face when I had the chance. Oh well I'll catch 'em some other time.
critics out there: I will admit that no one can do this better than the Mothers but Phish did an admirable job with a four piece band. Thats pretty goddamn impressive
it's physically impossible to "nail" zappa but i always love trey's peaches. I wish phish would do like a hot rats/ grand wazoo or waka jawaka combo for halloween.... plenty of room to jam.
Damned good attempt at the song. Some flubs by keyboards and Trey, and please... Peaches? This is a pop-hits song. How many others could they have tried from Zappa instead?
I agree with rudygetsplenty that Phish deserve some love for a very respectable cover and for keeping Frank's music alive. Sure, it's not Frank, but that's impossible bar. Hopefully, this turns some folks on to Frank. Check out the excellent performance from Frank's last tour.
hmm.. lets see four muisicians vs . something like 12 ... I'd say they do a hell of a job replicating the sound . Would like to see Trey's band play this one (need some brass) . Still one of my favorite covers by Phish.
Yes ZPZ plays this song perfectly...and it is one of only a few dozen songs in their rotation. They play it probably every three shows. Phish cycles through hundreds of songs from several different genres of music. Trey missed a couple of changes on a song he hasn't played live since 1999 and you get to sit back and nitpick. I'd much rather they reintroduce Peaches into the rotation and sound rusty than to shelve it for good.
To the hardcore Zappa fans who don't know a lot about Phish and think they are nothing more than a stoner band- Phish, like any other band, has nights where they're on their game, and nights where they might be a little rough. Nonetheless, Phish performances are a completely different experience that you cannot understand until you are a part of it. A poor quality video from someone's iPhone isn't the best representation. That being said, that doesn't make up for any of Trey's flubs. But that's all they are, flubs. Trey is more than capable of playing what Frank plays note for note. But like every performer, sometimes you just have a rough night. I have plenty of other Phish shows in my iTunes library where they did this same tune nearly flawless. Another thing to consider is, Phish is literally just four guys. A lot of bands you'll see might have four or five guys visible on stage, but they may also have other guitarists and keyboardists hidden away somewhere else. Frank had at least ten people backing him up at all times. All I mean when I say this is, it's not going to sound like Frank. And that's not what they're trying to do. They just like to pay respect to people like Frank who had such a large impact on them. And believe me, there are PLENTY of Phish fans who love Frank. I'm one of them. And there are plenty of Phish fans who are not stoners. I am also one of them.
Trey said in a recent interview that he felt terrible after this performance because he fucked it up so bad. Eh well. I'm sure it was still awesome to see live, and all the details are for people at home to harp over.
The mix is AMAZING! How did this recording happen, please? And for all the Zappa purists out there, this is a GREAT version of the tune. The absolute best rendition is here: ruclips.net/video/04QCGFirghI/видео.html
The guitarist made a lot of mistakes and skipped out on a lot of the fills...Well, good try. This is not one of Zappa's harder songs but it is beautiful and one of my favorites.
i hate how everyone plays this song to the record tempo. even Zappa wanted it faster, pretty much every live version of it was significantly faster with just about everyone of has bands lol
To hear any band other than Zappa Plays Zappa try and replicate Zappa's music, especially a stoner band like PHISH, at the risk losing loyal followers, is remarkable. As a life-long Zappa fan, this attempt at Peaches en Regalia is listenable. Just for the simple fact that NOBODY plays Zappa music! I doubt that many in the audience even knew that it was a Zappa tune.
what are you even talking about? Zappa gave the 'nod' to phish in in the 90's. WE ALL know it's Zappa tune... yea we might like to puff sensi, but we KNOW our music.
MK, while I agree on your thing consider this. ZPZ's whole focus IS to replicate the music. ZPZ is one of my favorite groups to see, (well, no offense Phish you are always one of my fav's but as of late, I don't watching shows that lack intimacy etc.) - ZPZ plays ONLY, and rehearses as a group, the music of Frank Zappa, and clearly has Dweezil as a first hand source... This performance was perhaps not one of Trey's best, but it still serves Frank a great amount of honor, as Lieutenant Worf would say, and perhaps yet an additional amount of ones love for the great man that is Frank Zappa to Stovokor. The more the world can hear that was created by Frank, the better. Qapla', Frank, Trey, and Dweezil... and yes, even you MK.
Dave Testa It is all about the continuation to the voice at this point, and even more so, perhaps equally, a voice whose political assessment of the times was ahead of it's curve...
I knew some diehard Phish head, too blinded by their love for the band, would get all butt hurt over one comment. I can't criticize one performance simply bc it sucked? Yes "Peaches en Regalia" is a complex arrangement but these are PROFESSIONAL musicians. Zappa Plays Zappa plays it perfectly. Shit, even I can play this song better than Trey did in this vid.

im a big phish fan and a big zappa fan. i must agree that this cover isn't particularly good. they have done a much better job covering this song. you can actually see trey essentially giving up at one point in this video.
That guy jumping has probably been chasing this for years. Ive been there.

+Joe Moe we saw 'em open the first show of the nye run in '93 with peaches, the year FZ died.
They played it occasionally between the 10 years you said they didn't. I just listened to them play it in Vegas in 96 5 minutes ago on RUclips. Just sayin'
slvrizgold um, 96 would have been 13 years before this date. 🤔
so their chops are the best here? LOL none of them would have made it past the 1st audition in FZ's band.
I was at this show. I was around a bunch of newer fans who didn’t understand the gravity of the situation and why I was as excited as I was.
I about fell down the stairs at MSG when they played the first notes of this song. So glad to hear it played live again, even if not in the best form.❤️
Was at this show, amazing cover, can't believe they can pull something like this out of the hat having not played it for years. Thanks for uploading.
I have just played this vid 10 straight times. I think I'm addicted. Wow. I wish I could've been there.
Phish always does the coolest covers, and this one note for note.Something you don't hear often is what excellent musicians they all are.
"note for note" if you are ignoring most of it. especially the rhythm. its kinda bad
I love how David Beard pops in here every couple years just to remind us all that he still doesn't like it.
I was there, and it was sick, but this video is the best concert video and audio quality I've ever heard. Nice job TP.
First time they'd played it live in ten years. Considering that and how complex of a composition that is, I'm more than impressed. If you don't like it, don't go to shows...more tickets for the rest of us.
sound quality is absolutely INCREDIBLE! where did this come from? i feel like
i'm in the room!
My first Phish show, amazing.
oh man...want to witness this in person so bad!! great vid!
What a picture this camara takes!!! I got to get me one of them!

lol bands rehearse before shows. at least real bands do I cant speak for phish
i cant stop listening to this song!
sickest bust out of fall tour, so glad i was their
@arouska eh i found zappa plays zappa's version to be the best cover for sure. thats why it won a grammy. they do a very good job for a cover
they used to play it all the time and hadnt since 99 and yes peaches..thats why we had a peaches sign at every show on tour....and hell yeah it worked
The spirit is amazing; this totally did justice to FZ!
sick pull - and wow so many views....this Phish thing might be catching on
awesome experience!!!
Nice vid!
Great Job!
first show this was the highlight for me
great vid
my legs hurt from the amount of dancing this song brought out of me
@TylerPenn you are a friggin' genius! i don't know if you do sound engineering for
a living or not, but if you don't, you should!!
It's a Zappa song Ej420, you were correct. I wish I had just gotten my ticket for under face when I had the chance. Oh well I'll catch 'em some other time.
Excellent.
Peaches was played for the first time since September 24, 1999 (186 shows).
totally mind blowing...
lol its literally below average
Énorme !!
the version from spac last year was on point, you should check that out
i don't think I was ready for them to play this...seeyatonight!
critics out there: I will admit that no one can do this better than the Mothers but Phish did an admirable job with a four piece band. Thats pretty goddamn impressive
Frank's best thank you phish
I love this so much, it's a pretty literal translation...The respect it deserves
i love ascending scale trey does at 1:55
it's physically impossible to "nail" zappa but i always love trey's peaches. I wish phish would do like a hot rats/ grand wazoo or waka jawaka combo for halloween.... plenty of room to jam.
Physically impossible bahahaha
@huskerfan450 Phish is very good, but ... no, they don't play this better than Zappa did in any of his many rearrangements.
great camera! what is it?
Looks like a hot show!
@TylerPenn A+ work....ive been dying to see this them play this one
Yo. Just recently started recording some video at shows. Are you using live audio or dubbing the soundboard over?
What a bummer.
so funny, so great. YESSSSSSSSSSSS
Trey punched out right before the solo, but still an amazing sounding cover!
One of Frank's best
it's not synced up with the vid
Damned good attempt at the song. Some flubs by keyboards and Trey, and please... Peaches? This is a pop-hits song. How many others could they have tried from Zappa instead?
jesus christ mike gordon. 0:53 sounded sub par at absolute best.
Man they should have rehearsed this a few more times...
A great job playing the Frank Zappa time!
lmao dude in the hat is so pumped
FZ was the ultimate jam band
not really. zappa did solos but everything was neurotically practiced. he was a perfectionist.
Big Red is practicing, and its paying off in a big way
@sweetpeajunglebean A special remaster I did on the audio gives it that rich full sound
I agree with rudygetsplenty that Phish deserve some love for a very respectable cover and for keeping Frank's music alive. Sure, it's not Frank, but that's impossible bar. Hopefully, this turns some folks on to Frank. Check out the excellent performance from Frank's last tour.
dude in the hat at 0:04 is so happy he got his song
lol dude in the hat is so pumped
Oh yeah, T-Ride is gonna be hella fun :-)

Ha ha YEAHHHH!
loved it
i dont think trey was 100% prepared to play this
we all expected it because it was the anniversary of zappa's death
@pharcyd00
yup more tix for us you said it man!!
gordon at 2:26 is killin' it!!!
please relax. this is a sick cover and we all know that any member of phish can outplay every person on this comment list.
Trey said in a recent interview that he felt terrible after this performance because he fucked it up so bad. Eh well. I'm sure it was still awesome to see live, and all the details are for people at home to harp over.

@bartul777 Frank Zappa song, phish is just covering it
@amirush1983 Sorry you don't get it.
except that it hasn't been played since Fall 99
Trey has an early flub but finishes OK
@amirush1983 I'm sorry, sir, but what you're saying doesn't make any sense. Conflicting insults much?
ZAPPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why did i get off after albany.. sanity never came my way..
Their composed stuff is great right now but they still are further behind on the improv then they were in '03
The guitarist made a lot of mistakes and skipped out on a lot of the fills...Well, good try. This is not one of Zappa's harder songs but it is beautiful and one of my favorites.
bullshit man mike killed it!
it takes big balls to cover zappa
dude who cares if the guy is jumping up and down..I think ur just pissed that u didnt have as much fun as that guy
i hate how everyone plays this song to the record tempo. even Zappa wanted it faster, pretty much every live version of it was significantly faster with just about everyone of has bands lol

Dave Testa Sorry for the offense to your performance (I've clearly made a million times worst at my best), but to Mr. Zappa's political "balls"...
Where are their trampolines and dildos?!
Try this version folks. ruclips.net/video/MEg215ySdo4/видео.html.
@Greg509 probubly. fools, damn fools.
PEACHES COMEBACK XCEL 2016
best phish song
its frank zappa. this isnt even a solid cover

A year later and it stink stinks.
Close minded and ignorant go read a book on music assuming you are able to read
not true.....Frank's dying wish was for people to play his music.
great song, phish version pretty sloppy though... typically
out of tune in relation to the keyboard ..... bass is caveman level at best .... but gosh, don't they fit my vision of lifestyle & self image
If you diluted Frank Zappa’s version you would get this watered down hack job. Trey can’t even hit the notes..
Are these guys for real? Thats the worst zappa cover i've heard! Should be called Phish Shreds!
