I had real leather in like.. 8 cars in a row.. I now have a 'vegan leather' car.. it's like 5 times better than any leather I ever had from some of the most top end car makers lol. How? I'm over 5 years and nearly 90k miles into this vehicle, the seats look BRAND F'N NEW still. NO stains.. NO creases.. NOTHING.. on a very light tan/cream color seat. Not a SINGLE mar. Not ONE. EVERY leather seat I ever had, within 2 years and maybe 50k miles.. ALL had creases.. some would have cracking.. some would have tearing.. some would have peeling.. some would have slight staining or color fading occasionally.. there's no way I consider that a superior product. I would PAY more to have the fake leather again, assuming it's as good as the one I have.

    • @robertbigler7743

I agree! And it has been said that the quality of vinyl today is NOT as good as the vinyl available 30 years ago... Why not improve vinyl again to the level where it can last the life of a vehicle (not just last through the warranty period)?

    • @airheart1
      @airheart1 Год назад +3

@@robertbigler7743 Idk man.. I remember the vinyl when I was kid.. it felt like slippery or plasticy crap. The 'vegan' ones I have today.. which is just some vinyl with who knows what else added in.. feel way closer to a leather seat than anything I felt 30 years ago. And they wear like they may well last the life of the vehicle and still look brand new. I swear mine look like they did day one, 5 years and 90k miles later of my ass in the seat. I think they're far superior to the vinyl I remember.. which is why I always bought leather seats until I bought a car where it wasn't even an option.. and now I'm glad they didn't give me the option, because I would have picked an inferior product out of an old, outdated bias I had in my head. And my memory of EVERY leather seat I had is, by the time I sold or traded in the car.. the leather looked like it was 10 years older than it really was. Not a fan of cracks and creases all over my seats.. and every leather seat I had, had at LEAST many creases. Not these 'vegan' seats. Not one crease.

About the leather quality and rejection rate, the old Rolls-Royce process of choosing leathers was very labour intensive and exacting , and the cows from what I heard were not allowed near barbies in the farms, also the wood veneers were kept in storage for years ,in case the owner damaged the car and the replacement veneers had to match, this from what I saw in a video about the process of building a RR.

    • @rfarevalo

Another great video Munro team. Carl did a wonderful job.
GM is their own worst enemy. GM stands for General Mess and has for decades. They make their products lines to complex with too many options, too many models, etc. Would love to see GM pick GMC Trucks or Chevy Trucks, not making both. The trims and options on most of their vehicle lines is too much. I read they are considering a Corvette brand and it just blows my mind. They do not need another brand, they need to learn how to keep things simple. Fewer options means they can focus on better quality and keeping costs down, yet they never do. Over the years we seen brands get killed off, but never enough. The ending the use of the Geo, Saturn, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile brand divisions was great from a business stand point. It is crazy to think GM has had over 40 brands over their history. Much of that was driven by companies they acquired, but GM spawned new brands and seems like their current company culture still favors such things even if it is not truly good business sense.
As far as leather for Lyriq, I guess you can say Cadillac buyers want that, but some of these faux leathers are impressive and if there was no real leather option, I doubt that would be the deal breaker for a buyer. What seems to be making people cancel their Lyriq orders is the wait time and that first batch randomly shutting down. This is why GM should not be worried about adding more options, but instead working on production tech/speed and quality. If they could nail that down, it will do much more for the GM bottom line than adding leather to their electric SUV.

I wonder why we cannot find any textil materials instead of (vegan or not) leather seats?
Textils are so much nicer, not hot and sticky in summer or cold in winter.
I installed in my Tesla some neoprene cover seats (Wet Okole), the additional layer is like memory foam.
So much nicer than the original Tesla vegan seat covers, I always get compliments for those covers.

I find it hard to believe that GM didn't anticipate having a leather option when designing the car. Keep in mind the lyric was not meant to go on sale as early as it did, and to get it out the door they made major limitations in terms of available options for the 23 model year. Basically a call was probably made to all suppliers to see who was ready first. The synthetic material won

In addition vegan materials are often chosen now due to environmental costs which is the major reason why we are transitioning to evs in the first place so using real leather is not looked upon as highly anymore. That is also a major reason why Tesla went away completely from real leather due to customers and the public pressuring them. The steering wheel was the last thing to change finally in the 3 and y. Our 2018 model 3 is all vegan but it still had the leather steering wheel at that time when it was built. I think they changed in 2020?

I roll as a vegetarian. BUT, as meat consumption results in the inevitable byproduct of hides, I think it important to take the nose to tail approach if we're going to continue with livestock farming. Meat consumption isn't going to disappear anytime soon, so I personally feel the use of a natural product, wherever possible, is a far better choice than simply landfilling the hides only to end up producing the highly polluting greenhouse gas, methane, as they rot down.
To me, as an ethical consumer, wherever possible, use of real leather is the more moral option for those that can afford to do so. I do realise that the processing of hides isn't without its own environmental impacts; but this is also true of wind turbine, solar panel, EV etc production. Better shouldn't be the enemy of perfection.

Why? My experience with one Vegan option I've owned for the last 5 years, is FAR superior to ever leather I've had from Audi, Merc, Caddy and Infiniti. It's not even comparable. The amount of defects in every leather seat I could see by the time I sold back those cars is insane.. the amount of defects I have on these 'vegan' (bullshit terminology, but whatever) seats is 0. 0 defects in almost 90k miles and 5 years of my ass in that seat. Not a crease.. not a mar.. not a scuff.. not a tear.. the seams don't stretch or anything.. not a damn thing.. they literally look like they could be day one brand new seats. It's f'n amazing to me every time I wipe them down.. nothing stains.. nothing scuffs them.. I am not easy on them.. they are an off white cream color.. if they were leather, they would look like shit by now. I won't be going back to leather personally. These things are genius. And they feel great.. if you didn't tell me they weren't real leather on day one, I'd barely question it. Yeah.. it's a little different texture when you're really paying attention.. but not in a particularly bad way.. not like old shitty vinyl seats. These feel very nice and textural.. you don't get the whiff of leather.. or that feel of all the imperfections in it.. but.. after 5 years of using them, you seriously couldn't drag me back to a real leather option if I could pick a fake leather as good as what I currently have.

This is a sad decision and I personally was looking for a vehical and when I opened the door to a hybrid and saw real leather, I shut the door . Went over to the owner of the dealership and made the comment. Who ever made the executive decision to put real leather in a modern let's say environmentally friendly vehical has just lost my business. Was rediqulous in this day in age. Yes we know vegan leather has no so great products in it. But come on where is the material science and recycled materials. Geeze.
