      @Jake Collins Which part of his fight with Wong Jack Man was a script? Or his timed fight with the Karate Practitioner that hounded him constantly mocking JKD? Or even the bout that Bruce Lee lost during his early uni days when a boxer dropped him when he tried wingchun vs boxing in college (and thus he learned the importance of western boxing)? You do realize movie actors have lives outside of the screen right? Not their entire life is a script.

    • @Teo_live
      @Teo_live 2 года назад

      @Jake Collins Your first sentence is verifiably false, there are two versions of the fight and in both Wong didn't win and in both Bruce acknowledge the weaknesses of Wing Chun and Bruce's crappy cardio back then hence JKD was born and Bruce became a fitness fenatic. Your laughing emoji doesn't help mask your ignorance there.
      Now what do you mean "real proof"? That isn't how history works. It is like you are so stupid that you expect camera phones to have existed over half a century ago. History works by both documentation and accounts (i.e., evidence not "real proof"), if you don't like this then you need to deny the very existence of humans before the invention of the camera yet alone any fighting they have done outside of a camera. My gosh you are silly.

  • @ReconciledByFaith
    @ReconciledByFaith 2 года назад +306

    The sequence at 1:57-2:07 gives the best portrayal of Bruce's real-life athleticism out of anything else we see in his movies. He's incredibly well balanced and light on his feet here, and he's not holding back his speed so much as he usually does for the camera. People look at his over-the-top movie movements which he purposefully slowed down for the camera and think he was just an actor, but there are glimpses of his real abilities in scenes like this one or earlier in this movie when he annihilated his friend with a side-kick into the boxes.

      he was very good, but you know these are choreographed moves and stunt sparring, which actually also shows Bob Wall mastery too (he too could be much faster) to fold on the right timing and distances for Bruce Lee or ....ouchies. The 2 of them rehearsed a lot intensively together, although not as much as Dan Inosanto and Bruce did for years knowing each other's moves to the beat, and still they had accidents too. And all in all, they did not free fight moves, as a real fight would be even less careful than Martial Arts competitions are used by both contestants. Real fights go wilder and more unpredictable. Mostly Bruce and Wall wanted to showcase some direct but very impressive techniques that looked great on film, most of the time Lee's stuff because he wanted also to promote his Jeet-Kune-do. For an scene as this which took less than a minute in moves, they did practiced for hours and days, and as Bruce had more filming expertise too which made him a rare bird in multiple artistic skills I can see them (and specially him) rehearsing together with the Photography director, after they already had set the moves to find the perfect angles and distances to showcase the techniques above their acting, which it came interpolated by first close-up's filmed separately. Their editing was also pretty above to what sub-standards were happening earlier in Chinese cinema of the kind. These film makers were aiming higher and trying to upgrade drama, Martial Arts action films not as it had been going in China but right behind into the same page as Kurosawa and the Japanese had been doing earlier ....although these were more complex, with more Mature content in character development and universal tropes than these "Asian Westerns" of new wave but for wider audiences, less sophisticated

    03:38 that kick Bruce delivers to the guys head was so lightning fast that all you see is the recoil....you cant see the contact of his foot to his head.
    But if you slow-mo that part, you'll see Bruce's foot stop like 2 inches from his head. Now that takes an incredible amount of control and years of practice to perfect that: delivering a lightning fast kick like that to someone's head and stopping the momentum just before impact.
    Bruce Lee was without doubt the greatest martial artist who ever lived.

    What I love about Bruce Lee fights is that there's an extra emphasis on ANTICIPATION of action and when it sets off, it's explosive, but only small savoury bursts. Almost every other fight scene out there is just constant hits and blocks, but people often forget that less is more. There's a reason why the 40 minute Final Game of Death is so damn enjoyable to watch. It's only three fights, but each one has a reasonable pace of action, rest, and tension.

      What makes Bruce Lee such a powerful martial artist is his speed and agility. He understood that the one who wins a fight is the fastest and most agile, surprising the opponent is the best way to win. Brute force is a case apart, if you are strong but not fast enough, it is useless. Another point is your fighting philosophy of not sticking to rules or limits. In a fight, you don't care about honor, it's a matter of survival, life or death. Use everything to your advantage, even dirty moves. Maybe this is one of Bruce's reasons for not competing professionally, it would go against his ideas.

    As a scrawny, awkward, unatheletic, Chinese kid with thick glasses in the 70s, I loved Bruce Lee's movies. Watching a skinny Chinese kicking everybody's ass was a cathartic experience for someone who was always bullied in school by the bigger boys. But now, seeing these clips as an adult (senior citizen, actually), I can't help thinking how crude these films were, and how much more sophisticated Hong Kong cinema is these days. That being said, I must admit, I still love watching Bruce in action.

      Albert, I too had a lot of bullies growing up. I was also scrawny awkward and unathletic. A high school teacher approached me and invited me to study ITF Taekwondo at his studio. When I started blocking the bullies's strikes, and redirecting their attempts to push me against lockers etc so they would themselves hit the locker, they eventually stopped bullying me. :)

      @@MrOnion-js1ls I remember reading an article that said Bruce was aware of how crude the movie looked compared to Hollywood features, so he didn't want it released in the States. Warner Brothers acquired the rights to it and released it in the States after Bruce's death under the title, "Return of The Dragon " to capitalize on the success of "Enter The Dragon ".

      Technique comes technique goes, however, only Bruce Lee's martial arts genius has been captured in celluloid.
      No matter how backward they may be Comparable to Iron Man, Superman and all good movies.
      That was product with many money, and of course special effect.
      However, when Bruce is in action, like Flesh or Superman, he is a Perfect, a well-oiled fighting machine.
      One extra ordinary special effects himself.
      His punching and kicking speed, with a animalistic -like elegance.
      Which is still looking for the same today and cannot find it.
