The first time rock and rap came together was actually when Afrika Bambaataa teamed up with John Lydon of the Sex Pistols to make the song World Destruction. Believe or not, I learned that in Music History class back when I was a college student before dropping out due to difficulties adjusting to life changes.
Nu Metal was fun. It was the most unifying of all of metal subgenres. Have they had an open-mind, it has unified metalheads, hip-hoppers, and goths. Plus, I have to point out: while Korn is often credited for the first true nu metal album, P.O.D.'s album "Snuff The Punk" pre-dated Korn's debut by a few months and can be argued as nu metal. Lastly, speaking of unpopular opinions: Biohazard > RATM
I'm a big rap fan, and while I don't know much about rock, I always bumped the volume whenever nu metal songs were on the radio or in game soundtrack in the 2000s. System of a Down in particular are my favorite, and the fact rap could crossover with both R&B and rock (ironically bashing the first in the 90s and getting backlash from the second) was actually nice.
My dad’s alarm to take out the trash is set to Trash by Korn, and after that song finishes it autoplays other nu metal songs. So, I’m always blessed with the opportunity of listening to nu metal every tuesday at 6. I should also note that Billy Corgan praised nu metal. Considering how perfectionist and egotistical the dude was, that’s some high praise.
@@Cameron23949 Because nu metal was heavily criticised by plenty of artists from the 90s, including Tool and Nine Inch Nails. Whether or not you enjoy the pumpkins, there’s no denying how popular they were in the 90s. So hearing praise for the genre by a well known name like that is interesting, at least to me.
I put Limp Bizkit in the "stupid but fun" category, especially the collaboration with Lil Wayne. It's so stupid but kinda catchy as well. Sorry for being another one who has Bizkit as a guilty pleasure. Staind just is what it is. But Trapt kinda sucks, and I think I'd rather get my asshair pulled out than listen to Kid Rock.
Sepultura did the nu metal route in 1996 with their album Roots. They did a thrash album in their earlier albums, then decided to do a groove metal album inspired by Korn. It's because of a commitment to never do the same album. They incorporated Brazilian music influence in the album.
Glad bumped into your channel from your comment on WMG I'm kinda mixed with Nu Metal era tho I still enjoy some bands and a good bunch of songs. Yes I do meme with awful Limp Bizkit and even use a mock voice. (I love to have fun even tho I like some edge.) But these days besides chillhop music to relax to because of my constant anxiety is on oppossum levels at times. I've oddly become a fan of rock music from the 70s and 80s which is an era I wasn't keen or didn't pay attention to back then. I'm not really a big fan of 90s music which is what I grew up with as a lil kiddy besides some songs I do for meme sake.
Hmm, it depends. Are you also including all those post-grunge (aka butt rock) bands that tried to rip off Alice In Chains and Eddie Vedder’s voice? If so, then I agree
I agree with what you said about Nu Metal's reappraisal in recent years. It definitely feels like a lot of those bands who were music journalist's punching bags like Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, etc. are becoming more accepted and even loved in recent years. Hell, I've even seen people reappraise Limp Bizkit, as bad as they can be at times.
When it comes to nu-metal I would say that Incubus’ S.C.I.E.N.C.E is one of my favourite mainstream nu metal albums out there. For the funky drumming and groove that the songs give. With some hip hop and electronic too. I really love their sound so much. Including the song redefine which is fucking groovy
I find Megadeth and Metallica fairly equal, in different ways. If I had to rank them Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets would get the top 2 spots for album rankings between both bands. Def Leppard's Hysteria ehh it had a few good songs, but man did it have problems. I like some grunge, but mostly Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. I can't see how nu metal would end rock music's popularity since edgy whiny lyrics and simplistic music is what most people like. Everything tends to get a nostalgia resurgeance 20 years later. Hair metal had it in the 2000s with some bands like Crashdiet and Crazy Lixx, good bands. LOL forgot about all the damage the 90s did to the English language.
It was that style of music and bands that got me intill heavy music maybe 15 years ago. I think the term new metal is another industry plant term as many bands from that time don't like or use the lable. Some great bands in there that have stood the test of time! 🤘
There is a reason why I have nu metal apologist on my bio... i’ll unashamedly lobster genre! If you want nu-metal that’s adjacent to hardcore, check out Nothingface! Snot and Boy Hits Car were also pretty good nu metal bands, too.
im one of those people that actually likes limp bizkit sure i get it there style of nu metal is nothing like any other nu metal bands like korn and slipknot but i love there guitar sounds like that mission impossible guitar riff in the song take a look around oh my god it sounded badass and also rollin is there most iconic song ever made in that era especially that wwe superstar and hall of famer undertaker used it for his entrance as the american badass lik i said i love limp bizkit and i respect your opinion and that is all 😁
This was a very interesting video and take on the genre. I never really had a problem with Nu Metal anyways. If anything, the worst genre of metal in my opinion would be Black Metal. It's rare that I find black metal bands that actually sound good. The only ones I happen to find is Necrophagia and Cradle of Filth. Otherwise, it just sounds like shit to me for some reason. But back to Nu Metal, I think Nu Metal is pretty good and I think people need to be a bit more open towards the genre itself and not just hold a grudge just because a couple bands that didn't sound all that great *cough* Limp Bizkit *cough cough* . But yeah, I agree with everything you said in this video. I think the genre deserves a bit more love than what it got from the beginning and even as of now. So yeah, well said my friend. ^-^
Nu Metal is where most of my music tastes evolved from. I feel that critics went too hard on the genre during its relative peak. People can, also, underestimate that the genre has more styles to it than just rap and hip hop elements. The genre can span across a broad range once you dive deep into the underground portions of it. Heck, even the mainstream has a bunch of moments where the genre can climb to good heights.
You should do a in defense of melodic death metal, as much like nu metal and metalcore itch who has unfortunately been the subject of irrational hatred from the so-called "metal elitist" Even though melodic death metal has given us bands such as In Flames and Arch Enemy.
as a Nu Metal fanatic whose collection of metal albums consists of 95% specifically Nu Metal, a lot of it was better than most people give it credit for, and that if anything the instrumentals for them were at it's peak and making almost anything work from the refined industrial guitars, different genre mixes, and unconventional vocal styles at the time, Linkin Park was one of the bigger prime examples of it along with Slipknot and System Of A Down
And don't forget the damn TikTok kids who became fans due to these vids made by the alt-girls and old-school fans who never left the scene, much like how emo was revived thanks to the same thing. Both genres often have a bit of a timeless feel, especially with frustrated teens dealing with idiot out-of-touch politicians on both sides and the COVID-19 pandemic. The top band that has a timeless feel for nu-metal is the band Korn, and for the emo genre, it's My Chemical Romance.

The reason why Linkin park was so good is because they actually had respect for rap and rock and so they knew how do combine em both
s/o to Slipknot, Linkin Park, Deftones and Korn for being genuinely good nu-metal bands
also SOAD

Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumkins suck though, so why does what he say have any relevance here?

I kinda enjoy some of their stuff in a "so bad it's good" kind of way. I'd take something that's hilariously bad over something annoyingly bad.

Great video. I've been meaning to get into more Nu Metal acts and this is a great starting point for me.

12:40 - 13:02 Not to mention, we got reaction channels going 😵😲😱 for some breakdown that sounds interchangeable to other uninspiring breakdowns.
Nu Metal as a whole is actually still better than Grunge as a whole is, change my mind
Hmm, it depends. Are you also including all those post-grunge (aka butt rock) bands that tried to rip off Alice In Chains and Eddie Vedder’s voice? If so, then I agree

I do like some Nu Metal. I often find Limp Bizkit to be hilariously pathetic.

Im a die hard korn fan i was listening to while i was 5 that was in the 2000s i have all of their cds

Reveille was the first band that introduced me to the underground nu metal scene
Could you cover a retrospective on Marilyn Manson?

I agree with you as a non-metal fan, and I would take nu-metal over reggaeton and bro-country any day.

I thought mushroomed slipknots little brother

Can't believe you forgot about I'm the Man when you were talking about Anthrax smh
deftones is so goated
Some grunge is overrated, some is da bom! I like some Numetal as well. Some is horrible, however. Thanks for the great video!
White Pony isn’t nu-metal, it’s alternative. Compare Knife Prty to Break Stuff, and they sound nothing alike.
My first nu metal band was Static-X.
kid rock is not nu metal
Bawitaba is a Nu metal - adjacent song.
The bands he's shitting on are great. System of a down sucks ass
