What?! Last Respects is boosted by the amount of Pokémon that HAVE fainted?! Not the amount that ARE fainted?! Meaning using Revival Blessing and fainting again boosts it even further?! I didn’t know that. That’s absolutely nuts.
OK, you know what’s even crazier? Revival Blessing has one PP, so in theory with Species Clause you could have Leppa Berry Pawmot, and Leppa Berry Rabsca, for a total of four revivals and nine faints. Problem: while the move Assist is not in the game, it is in the format National Dex, and Revival Blessing is specifically coded to be callable by Assist. So suddenly the optimal strategy is to pack your team with Prankster Assist Pokémon who can only call Revival Blessing. That gives you a far larger number of revivals. The worst part? The best strategy isn’t even “get a very strong Last Respects”, it’s “make the game so boring that your opponent forfeits”. This is at least the third time Liepard has broken the game.

I was devastated when the move Swagger was first banned from gen 4, because it was the ONLY move that made Regigigas viable in OU at the time. Swagger + Psych Up can give you an honest chance to get past the Slow Start mechanic, and when it does finally wear off you've now got a boosted Regigigas. I know it's an annoying move, and it's 100% just praying to RNGesus rather than thinking, but I still enjoyed it, I thought it had a niche.

Last Respects was designed around VGC and Battle Spot Singles. It can reach a max of 200 in VGC and 150 in BSS still very high but more reasonable especially in VGC. Rage Fist is the more abusable move in VGC from the looks of it.
They could have just made its power cap at 150 (which still feels like a disproportionate reward just for being on your last Pokémon) if they remotely cared about game balance....
It is. Maushold and Anihilape pair well. At least they did, I haven’t kept up to date with current VGC. The old strategy was to just population bomb into the Anihilape and sweep with rage fist. But you also had the option of using follow me and doing whatever else with the Anihilape so you’d end up in annoying 50:50s. Pretty much the same theory as the old justified beat up strategy from forever ago, except the move stays permanently boosted as opposed to an attack boost.

It is unfortunate that baton pass is the only move some Pokemon have that allows them to switch after the opponent moves to allow for a safe switch-in (if the user is slower than the opponent). Would be interesting if there was a new move that worked exactly like teleport but for Pokemon that can’t thematically teleport (such as Torkoal). All of these banned moves does have me wonder what Pokemon would look like if the community reworked the battle mechanics, mainly because most of the bans relate to preventing set-up sweeper teams (Baton Pass and Shed Tail) or to minimise RNG (evasion boosting and Swagger)

I actually think it's inconsistent to patch desync moves like Counter and Psywave, but ban moves like Dig and Fly. Either ban the moves or patch them, don't play favorites. That being said, I hardly ever even _play_ competitive Pokemon, let alone gen 1, so my opinion holds basically no weight here. If people more experienced than me have decided to apply the rules this way, I'll accept their decision (not that I have a choice).
I really like the idea of Last Respects, but it definitely needs a nerf. Maybe a base power of 30 would be low enough for it to not take over the entire game and just be its own, unique way to build a team. It does drastically change how you play, but so does Trick Room and that strategy always feels underutilized with how few mechanics actually benefit from it.
Worth noting that Psywave is a move that ACTUALLY BREAKS THE GAME. In generation 1, there is an error in calculating floating points on random effects like Psywave. When used in link battles, if you roll 0 damage, it is likely to deal 1 damage on the opponent's side and desynchronize the game, leading to many weird softlock and crash outcomes!

350* base power on a move even. I also misunderstood this, 300 is the max bonus damage, but that's on top of the 50 damage it already deals. Honestly could be cool to start it at 0 (or 1 I guess) power and see if that makes it balanced. Or they could do the more obvious and make it only grow with 25 each hit, so 100 power after being hit twice, with still the exciting top damage of 200. Gamefreak if you want me on the team call me.
If you think about it, Castform and Cherrim can also BREAK some generation 4 games with the acid rain glitch. Does this mean the move pursuit, which helps cause the glitch, is the most broken move ever?

Pretty sure that if you give a mon t wave, sub, healing move and an attack they can do the exact same thing as a swagger mamoswine, yet we don't call thunder wave a broken move
Not exactly, while TWave can be disastrous with RNG, it'd be significantly less consistent. Not only because of the lower chance of not moving, but along wit swagger constantly boosting the confusion damage dealt means you have to rely on the RNG much less
I try to play and like pokemon. But its just absurd. It's like chess expect imagine your pieces randomly were removed from the board. And your opponents pieces were also randomly falling off the board. There's no foundation. Nothing to learn. It is impossible to play casually. You're just flipping a coin. It is so frustrating because this isn't the first time I've tried so hard to get into it because of how enjoyable it can be. Yet, it's not fun at all. It's just gambling. I can wake up one day and lose every match to a perfectly timed crit. At that point. I've actually wasted my time because I've learned nothing and got screwed by RNG so I wasn't able to learn. What a terrible game. So sad to see they still haven't given a damn to fix it. It's not a single player game it's competitive pokemon. What a joke
So glad I don't play any gen past 6 (occasional gen 7 Mix and Mega / BH where I use my gen 6 teams), balancing the game around doubles is straight up REGARDED - VGC is a **spectator e-sport.** That means the focus of the entertainment is on the AUDIENCE, not the players. If tournaments didn't need games to be over in 5 turns, you would NEVER see playing double battles, teams of 4 and a level cap of 50 that flat out locks late-evos out, some very significant Pokemon evolve at 55, and you don't get Hydreigon until 64! A pokemon battle is teams of 6 with no level cap, ubers and sleep clause being agreed upon between friends. VGC would have just confused and annoyed my friends, no one likes having to avoid XP like the plague, not being able to use your best Pokemon in-game... no way lol. I think I did 1 doubles battle ever, no one wanted to play it. I don't wanna hear "that's your opinion", VGC is objectively designed to be a spectator-sport, I don't follow the leaderboards, I have more respect for someone hitting 1600 in smogon singles than winning VGC as it's more about being an entertainer than a competitor.
Catridge game scales all mons to 50 in online/tournament battles regardless of their actual level, wtf are you talking about? Hydreigon was a top tier mon in gen 6 VGC and in early SV regulations

@@patrickstar8132 Yeah, absolutely. That doesn't mean that Dire Claw isn't broken, though. That's why I hate the argument of "Primeape has Rage Fist and Hisuian Sneasel has Dire Claw!" Basculin wouldn't have been able to make good use of Last Respects, but it got banned. Sneasler was absolutely too strong on its own merits, but Dire Claw is just an unhealthy RNG fest all around
@@typhlosion7872 the issue is dire claw is ONLY learned by sneasler, not even hisuian sneasel. So there's no point banning d claw when the sole learner is banned
My younger brother did a mono ghost run on SV and destroyed everything with rage fist and last respects
Ty for a vid to eat my food with 😊
Rage fist is one of the few counters to u turn.
There are numerous counters to U-turn, be it contact-punishing items or abilities like Rocky Helmet, Flame Body, Static, etc.
about the swagger portion I honestly disagree. Especially in the older gens confusion was just at the end pf the day a worse paralysis.
I think that confusion could maybe be made fair and fun if using a status move cleared it
I try to play and like pokemon. What a joke
The fact that certain players are consistently at the top easily proves that it’s not all “a coin flip”
You just got a case of the skill issue my dude
👍👍👍👍👍
Are you British
Crazy how in singles, shed tail is broken. But dog water in vgc.
