Amazing musicians playing amazing song - obviously. But of all the great drummers that have come and gone, it's very hard to imagine anyone other than Richie Hayward kickin' this tune other than him. Gone too soon, I miss him and his percussion spirit.
This song goes in so many different directions simultaneously, it’s a joy to listen to all these years later. IMHO, there was no band in Littlle Feat’s league. None.

Used to back the Camaro up in the car par of a place called Merry Christmas Park, it's in Florida down near Coconut Grove. Open the doors and the trunk and throw the frisbee with friends. It was loud, it was late but funny thing was, no one complained about it. I guess they loved this as much as we did.
This performance took place a week and a half before the recordings at the Rainbow Theater in London and the Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. which would comprise the Waiting For Columbus live album which was originally released on 2/10/78.

I could just play this in an endless loop. Saw Little Feat in winter 2001 in Fairbanks ,Alaska. They stayed at The Capitan Bartlett Hotel. It's no longer there sadly. Fun place to work. We got free tickets. Love me some Little Feat!
I was 16 then and lived in nearby Mülheim/Ruhr. To young to go to "Gruga Hall“. But German tv and WDR radio broadcasted this concert (and all the other Rock Palast Concerts) live. The radio in stereo. Perfect for taping: no talking, no interruptions, no commercials. Just hours and hours of wonderful live music, not only on this evening. Well, those were the days ... ;-)
This concert is taken from the "1. Rockpalast Nacht" (Rockpalace Night) live at Essen/Germany/Gruga Halle on 23./24.7.1977 and broadcasted by German TV. The other bands in the following order: Rory Gallagher, Little Feat, Roger McGuinns' s Thunder Byrd.

you're right, but these two shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. neil peart ain't a great drummer, he's a one trick pony who's style only fits rush perfectly. just look at how embarrassing he was at the buddy rich memorial. he sounded like an amateur and not even a good one. hayward is so underestimated, but his grooves are impeccable and his fills always tasteful. that whole time loves a hero album is amazing!
Richie is a Top 10 drummer of all time!!And that's including fusion and jazz-the cat is an absolute beast on the kit man an absolute legend!!Neil Peart is by far the most overrated drummer ever I thought he was good when I was six and then I grew up and heard hundreds of drummers better than him-if somebody tells me their favorite drummer is Peart I laugh and walk away knowing I just talked to an idiot with very little knowledge of music

Don't feel sorry for Ritchie. He was in heaven here. Keeping time the entire time with his left foot. That's insane. Right brain left brain working together. Not many people can do that.

Yes, Bobby's. It was an open secret, and confirmed in a book I read on Lowell, that he hated "Day at the Dog Races." He'd walk offstage when it was played. But what he failed to recognize is that this was the direction Billy Payne and Paul Barrere, the other two primary songwriters, were going. Lowell's solo effort, "Thanks, I'll Eat It Here," was decent at best, and Lowell died in 1979. Band didn't come back for another 8 or 9 years. Still, Mr. George was a brilliant musician.
Lowell was actually fairly cruel to his bandmates and behaved like the selfish drug addict he was... Sad really because they loved him and they were all better together, but he had serious issues and was spiraling down the drain
I saw Lowell walk off the stage during this song at Brown University auditorium. I walked up to him and had him autograph a napkin. Little did I know he'd be dead within a year or so. What a real shame. There will never be another band like this one.

I didn't know either until I saw him walk off stage for this song during the same tour, in Boston. That was my 3rd LF concert and the most memorable.
