I played this song to my now husband back in 1977...he was blown away and we still listen to it and remember the good ole days.
Most creative and progressive music I've ever heard from Little Feat. Brilliant! One of my favorites from this album.
Lowell George hated it. I love this jam.
This song goes in so many different directions simultaneously, it’s a joy to listen to all these years later. IMHO, there was no band in Littlle Feat’s league. None.
Amazing musicians playing amazing song - obviously. But of all the great drummers that have come and gone, it's very hard to imagine anyone other than Richie Hayward kickin' this tune other than him. Gone too soon, I miss him and his percussion spirit.
Every rock band needs a epic instrumental. This is Little Feet’s marquee to me.

Little Feat was one of the first few bands I heard after they came out with FM in the 70's. Jeff Beck was another. Steely Dan. All of these follow a kinda jazzy, 70's foot chase vibe. I could just play this in an endless loop. Saw Little Feat in winter 2001 in Fairbanks ,Alaska. They stayed at The Capitan Bartlett Hotel. It's no longer there sadly. Fun place to work. We got free tickets. Love me some Little Feat!
I was 16 then and lived in nearby Mülheim/Ruhr. To young to go to "Gruga Hall“. But German tv and WDR radio broadcasted this concert (and all the other Rock Palast Concerts) live. The radio in stereo. Perfect for taping: no talking, no interruptions, no commercials. Just hours and hours of wonderful live music, not only on this evening. Well, those were the days ... ;-)
This performance took place a week and a half before the recordings at the Rainbow Theater in London and the Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. which would comprise the Waiting For Columbus live album which was originally released on 2/10/78.

This concert is taken from the "1. Rockpalast Nacht" (Rockpalace Night) live at Essen/Germany/Gruga Halle on 23./24.7.1977 and broadcasted by German TV. The other bands in the following order: Rory Gallagher, Little Feat, Roger McGuinns' s Thunder Byrd.

Freaking Brilliant, as good now as it was in 1977. Can't play it Loud enough. Too bad this was the beginning of the fracture in the band
Been a fan for a long time. Saw them numerous times, you are all right, Richie is one of the best behind a drum kit. Rhythm always drives the great bands, this is proff of that. God I miss this rendition of the Feat. But Tower of Power Ron's withe these boys then it was truly special.
This was the band tune that sent Lowell running for the door. ... He felt the band was trying to be Weather Report.
I'm glad he never took part in it - so it still it is forever the special Little Feat Band song :-)

neil peart ain't a great drummer, he's a one trick pony who's style only fits rush perfectly.
just look at how embarrassing he was at the buddy rich memorial.
he sounded like an amateur and not even a good one.
hayward is so underestimated, but his grooves are impeccable and his fills always tasteful.

Richie is a Top 10 drummer of all time!!And that's including fusion and jazz-the cat is an absolute beast on the kit man an absolute legend!!Neil Peart is by far the most overrated drummer ever I thought he was good when I was six and then I grew up and heard hundreds of drummers better than him-if somebody tells me their favorite drummer is Peart I laugh and walk away knowing I just talked to an idiot with very little knowledge of music
@@andrewbintang4591 / Two totally different drummers - we wouldn't compare Eddie Van Halen to Paul Barrere... Neal Peart has some amazing chops in his style - The beauty of music is that there can be Little Feat & Rush side by side being excellent simultaneously and yet completely differently

neil peart didn't even know basic rudiments and he started taking drumlessons in the 90's to get the basics down after failing at the buddy rich memorial.
hayward in the 70's was already levels above peart in the 90's, no comparison.

Don't feel sorry for Ritchie. He was in heaven here. Keeping time the entire time with his left foot. That's insane. Right brain left brain working together. Not many people can do that.

I've read that Lowell didn't like it because he didn't write it, and that it had no lyrics for him to sing. When the band would play it, he would just simply leave the stage during that time.

Richie for me was like Buddy Rich.
A shame Lowell didn't do a fusion slide thing with this.
He just hated this song.
Obviously the band were talented and could play anything and fusion was getting popular around this time w Jaco and Weather Report. Lowell just wasn’t into it, he was a down home soul and blues guy.
Compromise!!! But If it wasn’t for Lowell.... LF never would have had quite the opportunity to present this piece to soooo many people.

Yes, Bobby's. It was an open secret, and confirmed in a book I read on Lowell, that he hated "Day at the Dog Races." He'd walk offstage when it was played. But what he failed to recognize is that this was the direction Billy Payne and Paul Barrere, the other two primary songwriters, were going. Lowell's solo effort, "Thanks, I'll Eat It Here," was decent at best, and Lowell died in 1979. Band didn't come back for another 8 or 9 years. Still, Mr. George was a brilliant musician.
I didn't know either until I saw him walk off stage for this song during the same tour, in Boston. That was my 3rd LF concert and the most memorable.
Lowell was actually fairly cruel to his bandmates and behaved like the selfish drug addict he was... Sad really because they loved him and they were all better together, but he had serious issues and was spiraling down the drain

I saw Lowell walk off the stage during this song at Brown University auditorium. I walked up to him and had him autograph a napkin. Little did I know he'd be dead within a year or so. What a real shame. There will never be another band like this one.
