I'm a grown man and this scene still brings a tear to my eye every single time I watch it. I never could figure out why, but it must be longing. A stupidly romantic movie moment, and still my favorite movie scene of all time.
It's not a happy song at all, it's heartbreaking. It's about being so sad over losing someone and seeing them with someone else, that you settle for simply dreaming about them, and convincing yourself that's enough. But yes, this moment is just, I dunno, something about it, you know? Just sung with such supreme sweetness and sincerity. So beautiful 💜
This is a very beautiful song, and very few people seem to record it. This version with Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin is by far the most beautiful one I've heard.
I watch this over sometimes so I can see that look she gives him in the middle. Great acting in addition to this being one of the greatest recordings, period.
I didn't' realize when I was a teenager that the cornet coming out of nowhere was supposed to be funny. I, being musical, thought it was normal: If that's your instrument, then you are supposed to carry it around. Now I realize no one carries around a cornet in a handbag. Deeply funny.
This song made me go buy a ukulele last week - just to learn this song. My favorite parts are: the sweetness of Bernadette Peters as she looks at Martin at intervals during the song. Just melts me; the lead into the bridge on the ukulele, and Martin sticking out his tongue as he pretends to play it; the look on Martin's face when Peters picks up the trumpet and starts to play - mild surprise, then picking up the beat with his chin, and just going with it. It's one of the nicest love moments in film, I think.
Jerry Nepon-Sixt How's the ukulele goin"? I'v been meaning to get one as I"m already a singer/ guitar and harmonica player. Did you play the guitar first? And is playing the ukulele a space promblem with your fingers?
This song hit me so hard. Simplicity in music is often perceived as a bad thing. This is an example of how simplicity can bring out more emotion than complexity at times. Missing you Hemi
A rare peek into the real Steve and his sweet melancholy side. I remember freaking when I read his interview in RS or Playboy and his fave things were his cats and classical music. I was a kid still, early 80's and thought "WhAT?" then I saw the genius to it all. He is wonderful, wonderful, and again wonderful.
Yep...after hearing the dad and daughter I can't get this song out of my head now...and of course it made me think of this scene from The Jerk! Bernadette Peters was like a little doll!
Thank you for posting. She is a great actress and this is a beautiful song. Don't hear that much about Bernadette Peters these days but I think she's fantastic and I am a huge fan,
I know (I know) you belong To somebody new But tonight You belong to me Although (although) we're apart You are a part of my heart But tonight You belong to me Wait down by the stream How sweet it will seem Once more just to dream in The moonlight My honey I know With the dawn That you will be gone But tonight You belong to me But tonight You belong To me
In his biography, Steve Martin said when this scene would come on scores of people would leave the theatres to hit the bathroom or concession stands but I think it's the most genuine scene in the entire film and always pulls on the heart strings. Plus she's just so darn cute!
Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin just owned this song. Yeawh, a phenomenal song in its own right, but these two are absolutely great musicians and singers. Martin is so solid in all of his productions, it's hard to put into words but if you happen to see him, tell him, "thanks!" for me.
Fuckin classic!! Freakin Brilliant too! One of the best Steve Martin Movies ever and one of the best comedies I've ever seen. Steve Martin was knocking out his best stuff at this time and the world is all the poorer for his absence on the movie and comedy scene. But the years of that great generation have passed now and you don't get fantastic comedy written like that anymore. Tut tut
I have a feeling a lot of us looked up this video after seeing the little girl and her dad... good memories. Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters did a great job on this and are quite talented. Such a sweet song too!
This short song by these 2 very good actors really warms my heart. I listened to the song several times before moving on to another video. It's a special song in a very funny movie. 😊
Celebrities used to be so talented. They sang and danced and acted and wrote. They were true creators. They could entertain you just by going up on a stage with nothing else. It was a kind of renaissance. Now look what we have...
If it's a surprise to hear Steve Martin sing so well then you should go see "The Man With Two Brains," another classic of the era, coz he does another decent bit of singing in that too.
Of course this is a metaphor for their new found love and I could easily see how someone would call it "sweet" but in all reality this entire scene (including the kiss) is one of the greatest comical moments to ever appear on the big screen.
This is my favourite version of this song. Jauntier than the 1920s recordings, less creepy than the tweens Patience and Prudence singing about illicit moonlit wooing, and the lyric fits so neatly into the story at hand.
I love this scene. And yes, they're both really playing the Trumpet and Ukulele. Well, it was pre-recorded by them. Bernadette Peters is playing in the style of Louis Armstrong.
You edited the best part! Navan flies into the bell of the coronet, goes into these toobs through these valves up to give her a kiss on the lips! He didn't because he didn't want spit all over him!
and this is why I bring a trumpet with me to the beach... :P
One day someone will join me in a combined ukulele and trumpet solo...
not to be a know it all Nancy but that's actually a cornet. it's smaller put other than that pretty much the same thing as a trumpet.
+Jane Walters Interesting! I never knew that, so thanks for sharing that tidbit :)
+Jane Walters trumpet is cylindrical bore vs the conical bore of a cornet (and flugelhorn)
+Jane Walters Cornet? Looked like a flugelhorn to me.
You might like twenty one pilots c; haha
You know it's real when she hits you with the trumpet solo.
Sometimes, it is the simpler, more happy songs that bring the most painful tears to your eyes.
Damn straight

Her voice is adorable.
She's also the voice of Meg in Hercules and Rita from Animaniacs
Quixotic1018
Actually, Susan Egan is Meg in Disney's Hercules. :) But she is definitely definitely Rita from Animaniacs.
Crazy, I could have sworn she was also Meg :)
It's a 2-time Tony Award-winning and a 5-time Tony Award-nominated voice. But, OK, it's cute.
She's got this incredible sweetness that's amazing to behold 💜
This is a very beautiful song, and very few people seem to record it. This version with Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin is by far the most beautiful one I've heard.

That wasn't acting.
just a casual trumpet
+Julia Ochsenhirt *cornet!
Best Part!!!
The biggest laugh of the film for me. That thing comes out of nowhere!
You know, as you do.
They just don't make em like they used to anymore. One of my all time favorite movies.
I didn't' realize when I was a teenager that the cornet coming out of nowhere was supposed to be funny. I, being musical, thought it was normal: If that's your instrument, then you are supposed to carry it around. Now I realize no one carries around a cornet in a handbag. Deeply funny.
You gave me a good laugh reading your comment, even though 3 years later! FUNNY!
I mean it just appeared out of nowhere. She was not carrying it.
This song made me go buy a ukulele last week - just to learn this song.

It is a disarmingly lovely and charming scene. Such a pretty, sad old song.
That's an amazing coincidence. This song made me go buy a trumpet last week!
Jerry Nepon-Sixt exactly you explained just as I felt it, thank you.
Jerry Nepon-Sixt
How's the ukulele goin"?
I'v been meaning to get one as I"m already a singer/ guitar and harmonica player.
Did you play the guitar first?
And is playing the ukulele
a space promblem with your fingers?
Jerry Nepon-Sixt Weird that I’m replying to a 2 year old comment, but I’m pretty sure Steve Martin didn’t fake it. He’s a masterful Banjo player.
I wish I could sing both parts at once. So pretty
saaaaaammmeeee
Oh god the way she looks at him so longingly. The sweetest thing!
The expression on Martin's face while she plays the trumpet is perfect.
Sometimes you see something so brilliant it makes you weep.
that look she gives at 1:09....wtf that's so real
I read they used to be together
True, they were during the making of this film. He wrote the part specially for her.
This song hit me so hard. Simplicity in music is often perceived as a bad thing. This is an example of how simplicity can bring out more emotion than complexity at times. Missing you Hemi
It comes right after some increíble slapstick and hits you in the heart ❤️
A rare peek into the real Steve and his sweet melancholy side. I remember freaking when I read his interview in RS or Playboy and his fave things were his cats and classical music. I was a kid still, early 80's and thought "WhAT?" then I saw the genius to it all. He is wonderful, wonderful, and again wonderful.
This is precisely why I love music.
Yep...after hearing the dad and daughter I can't get this song out of my head now...and of course it made me think of this scene from The Jerk! Bernadette Peters was like a little doll!
Crying, so good
I replay this over and over. Both did such a great job! :)
I cry every time. Beautiful.
"The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! I'm SOMEBODY now!"
Such a sweet moment
He hates the cans! Stay away from the cans!
Thank you for posting. She is a great actress and this is a beautiful song. Don't hear that much about Bernadette Peters these days but I think she's fantastic and I am a huge fan,
Saw this in the theater when it opened. This still makes me so happy after all these years. 💕💕💕
Random trumpet. Amazing
Been listening to this song 10 times in a row!
Why does this make me tear up?
It's a deep longing that one could possibly find what the couple in the movie share.
I know (I know) you belong
To somebody new
But tonight
You belong to me
Although (although) we're apart
You are a part of my heart
But tonight
You belong to me
Wait down by the stream
How sweet it will seem
Once more just to dream in
The moonlight
My honey I know
With the dawn
That you will be gone
But tonight
You belong to me
But tonight
You belong
To me

I LOVE THIS SCENE.
I've had this stuck in my head since Pj's newest video ah
Same oml
same!
I love PJ but I've had this stuck in my head since Dodie and Emma xD
Nothing is more romantic than this.
I kept wondering where in the heck I heard this song before.... now I know and I'm happy, thank you Lisa!
Love the song!
Never thought that Steve Martin could sing. I mean I saw Grandmother's song but still, I never thought that he could sound this good.
+Swifty Prime Have you ever seen the movie "Little Shop of Horrors"? Do a search for "Son Be a Dentist".
+Lisa Liel yes but even then, he still sang better in this
+Swifty Prime I think that's because he was singing so sweetly here.
ya
What about "Blue Shadows" from Three Amigos?
Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin just owned this song. Yeawh, a phenomenal song in its own right, but these two are absolutely great musicians and singers. Martin is so solid in all of his productions, it's hard to put into words but if you happen to see him, tell him, "thanks!" for me.
Still one of the sweetest, most chill moments in any film ever
Fuckin classic!! Freakin Brilliant too! One of the best Steve Martin Movies ever and one of the best comedies I've ever seen. I have a feeling a lot of us looked up this video after seeing the little girl and her dad... good memories. Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters did a great job on this and are quite talented. Such a sweet song too!
This makes my dead heart beat
Aah love this movie and the song. Her voice makes it sound so soothing.
Love the simplicity and freshness of this little tune. ALBERTI
Perfection. Perfect perfect!
This short song by these 2 very good actors really warms my heart. I listened to the song several times before moving on to another video. It's a special song in a very funny movie. 😊
This is so cute! 30 years later.. Yes, still cute!❤️🎺
I am here for the same Reason! Can't get this tune out of my head :)
This is still my favorite movie scene of all time, and to this day, still tear inducing. Some day I'll learn this just to sing it to the perfect girl.
One of my favourite scenes from one of my favourite movies
i actually like this song and especially the tune and the ukulele
Netflix thanks for uploading this oldie but goodie of a film!!
One of the all time best comedies (and movie) ever made.
i haven't finished the movie yet. i always end up rewinding this scene to see it again, and again.
I love this movie
Arguably the best...
I remember watching the movie when I was five. I watched a whole bunch! and now the song came back to me through tik tok lmao
♫.. tonight you belong to me...♫
*sigh* love that tune
NOBODY can sing this song like they can!!!!
I wonder when Steve Martin will be publicly recognized as the genius he is. He does all things well and continues to find new things to do well.
Priceless and brilliant.
Aww that's still cute.....49 years + later.... and who knows how old the song is.....but I'm sure its double that
A lovely cover of a sweet little song.
It's always more interesting when the Tenor sings the high part and the Soprano takes the low part.
How come I’ve only found this song at 2018
I think I’ve been living under a rock
Simply genius
So much love for this.
My favorite movie!!! How are you not a fan?? I guess we're just different people.
Omfg you have the name of one of my best friends, and the surname of my other best friend
Nice lil song steve martin has a goid voice too
Literally one of the best things that ever happened musically.
She's approaching 70 and Bernadette Peters still looks amazing.
I only tried to find this cover because one of my friends had it in his game.
AFTER 3 WEEKS!!! I FOUND IT!!
"im not a fan of the movie" was that really necessary? and yes, this scene is classic.
Imagine not being a fan of this movie
......love it. 💗
Celebrities used to be so talented. They sang and danced and acted and wrote. They were true creators. They could entertain you just by going up on a stage with nothing else. It was a kind of renaissance. Now look what we have...
I like that song lol very cute And sad
Sweet song for a sweet couple
I love this film :D
Why hasn't anybody done a cover version like this. Such a good duet.
I love this movie!
This is one of the top comedic movie performances ever..
If it's a surprise to hear Steve Martin sing so well then you should go see "The Man With Two Brains," another classic of the era, coz he does another decent bit of singing in that too.

Whoever gave this a thumbs down is a dope
i love his voice
That trumpet came out of nowhere, although I wouldn't know, because I haven't seen the movie.
Notmatt yeah.. it did come out of nowhere even if you saw it
Notmatt lol it was supposed to. this is a hilarious comedy and lots of randoms occur.
Notmatt it got from touchy to hilar all of a sudden to me lol
She probably pulled it out of her butt.
She was holding it while they were walking kinda hard to see but it was there
Just found a version Eddie Vedder does on a CD he released in 2011 of Uke songs, but this version is still the best.
Love this one!
They are the best!
This is my favourite version of this song. Jauntier than the 1920s recordings, less creepy than the tweens Patience and Prudence singing about illicit moonlit wooing, and the lyric fits so neatly into the story at hand.
Just damn adorable. 💜
Thank you .
Thank you
I love this scene. And yes, they're both really playing the Trumpet and Ukulele. Well, it was pre-recorded by them. Bernadette Peters is playing in the style of Louis Armstrong.
"And that's all i need too. i don't need one more thing, I need thi-is." "I'm gonna buy you a diamond so big, it's gonna make you puke."
Wow I love it
Thank you, Edgar Wright for reminding me of this
Sweet memories! Mychristina Music Family
Bernadette Peters is so hot
You edited the best part! Navan flies into the bell of the coronet, goes into these toobs through these valves up to give her a kiss on the lips!
He didn't because he didn't want spit all over him!
I am in love :)
