    • @SailorBarsoom
      @SailorBarsoom 6 лет назад +306

      Actually, it's more of a "whoever you're with now, I can still dream about you" sort of thing. The title suggests a one night affair, but the lyrics make it clear that "tonight you belong to me" because hey, I can dream about anything.
      The double endendre title is probably deliberate, going back to the 1920s when it was written.

    Perry Como was a class act! PERIOD. I find some of these comments despicable...this was the 1950s TV....live...he was being very kind and comforting to these two adolescent girls.....not creepy. And they appreciated it....the youngest girl was so nervous...you hear...she asked Perry to not leave. There were never any rumors or issues with this fine gentleman....wish we could have this quality in men today.

    Geez, can you imagine? This was their first professional appearance -- on the _Perry Como_ show, no less!! Obviously, as they were walking upstage, they were afraid, but you could _see_ in poor Prudence's face that she was absolutely mortified. My God, it must have been like being led up to the gallows!
    They did a fine job, though. So happy that their TV debut was a success! Perry also did a nice job, so comforting and sensitive to their terror. He took his time with them, despite his stage director's pushing. Kudos to Mr. C.

      +Astrobran2 So do I. I was 6 and my sister 5. We had the 45 rpm record and absolutely loved this song and its flip side, "A Smile Is Something Special (A Ribbon Is Something Rare) and as our sopranos matched those of Prudence & Patience, would at family parties sing both songs in duet. Only recently did I glean the possible one-night-stand meaning of "I know with the dawn / That you will be gone / But tonight you belong to me," which yet could just mean (as we vaguely assumed it did; we were just entranced with the pretty imagery and sonorous melody and rhymes) that a husband is going off for a while, as to military service. I agree, "Mister C" was a kind man and host, doubtless put his hands on their shoulders just to steady their nerves.

    What impressed me about Patience & Prudence was their willingness in later interviews to confess that they were "put up" to doing this song by "Daddy the Bandleader," (renowned orchesta leader Mack McIntyre) and that neither of them had a stitch of musical prowess. While that lack of confidence and musical ability shows in this live performance, they did a commendable job, and that's all that counts. Their following attempts at hit singles faded fast, and they instantly disappeared from the music world. It appears to me they never wanted it to begin with. Why do some parents dig for gold, using their children as shovels?

      @@Alice-hs9yj, I think what he is referring to is a case in the twenties where a child actor got very famous and worked with Charlie Chaplain, etc. and made so much money that his parents quit their jobs and then his parents blew all of the money and after he stopped acting so they were poor again. But now (and probably when this was recorded) there is a law that says that a certain percentage of a child actor's earnings must be put in a secure bank account that can only be accessed by the child once they turn eighteen, or by the parents with the child's permission (the child must be eighteen when s/he gives his/her parents access to the account).

California passed the Coogan Law to protect the earnings of child stars back in those days, but according to the late Shirley Temple, all the money she made some 10 to 15 years later, was wrongfully used by her parents and when the acting jobs stopped coming, she was broke. So much for state law. As for Coogan, he continued acting in his adult years and wound up on The Munsters TV show back in the 60's. It was either that one or the other ghoulish TV show. It isn't creepy at all, this kind of music gives off the exact opposite vibe, that's WHY it's used in horror movies. The dissonance between the sweet/dreamy/fun music with creepy/weird/scary imagery is an effective method of making a scene feel unsettling.

    This is quite charming. I used to dislike this song, but strangely enough, what turned me on to this version was a brilliant film editor. There was a TV documentary about the appalling suffering of GIs during the Pacific War and the soundtrack used was this song. It should not have worked, but the effect was so poignant and chilling that I had to identify the song (which I had heard as a kid). I am glad to hear that the girls grew up to be young women relatively unscathed by their unwanted ten minutes of fame. It may be a fluke, but this version of the song still has a timeless charm about it.

    • @JudgeJulieLit
      @JudgeJulieLit 7 лет назад +2

      I share your appreciation of this song. It may be not about infidelity, but about a husband leaving for a while as for military service, likely why the documentarian deployed it. The girls' soprano voices are enchantingly right for the song's melody and romantic stream and moonlight imagery, and their childish innocent, "choir girl" voices a counterpoint foil to the grim theme of the documentary.
