Orvar the all form is one of the most annoying commanders because it forces your opponents to become deeply knowledgeable in deeper rules of magic.
His ability triggers when you cast a spell and it targets a permanent. Which means
    1. Players cannot interact with the spell in terms of countering it, they must interact with Orvar as the Orvar player casted the spell and it targeted something meaning the conditions are met
2.If you kill Orvar, the trigger still happens
3.Orvar combo's super easy with things that are hard to interact with. Many of his combo lines involve him making infinite mystical sanctuaries which are islands and can't be interacted with by most spells, not even the might cyclonic rift can save you and if you counter the spell, mystical sanctuary still copies and he can return the spell he was using to the top of his deck.
    4. There is no such thing as "stopping" an Orvar from comboing, you can only delay him from comboing.
5.*There are a LOT of magic rules that have been made in terms of copies entering the field.*
    ____________________________________________________
Some examples, and I am not making this up, our table has had to look all of these up.
*If the Orvar player cast a single mana spell an enchantment he controls, he can then copy that enchantment and then attach it to any legal target. This includes creatures with hexproof and shroud, because it technically doesn't target the target. If your creature has protection from blue, the enchantment still hits the creature, but then immediately falls off.*
(fun fact there is a spell called metamorphic alteration that changes a creature to a copy of another, nothing like having your commander with swiftfoot boots on get turned into a llanowar elves with nothing you can do to stop it)
*A copy of a creature that copies a creature comes in as the second copy, meaning*
if you have X creature that says "copy Y creature", then you copy creature X making creature Z, creature Z comes in as a copy of Y.
There are many more examples of weird Orvar rulings, and if these two made your brain hurt at all, don't worry there are a ton more. Just know if you make Orvar, you as a blue player will have a fun, new way to make everyone at the table dislike you deeply as no one expects when they sit down that they are going to have to be shuffling through the MTG rulebook looking for a ruling that was made 7 years ago.

What’s even meaner than this? A Kodama of the east tree and sakashima of a thousand faces partnered. Sakashima comes in as a target of kodama which causes them to trigger separately. All it takes is landfall/bouncy lands. There’s other options as well but it literally can win with so many options. The only downside to this commander is that it is a large mana cost but guess what? You have access to green, only the best mana ramp in the game. My only complaint about building the deck around them is that there’s too many cards I had to remove because it’s too potent. In fact, I can’t even use Orvar in it because there’s so few instants/sorceries that target my stuff.
I haven’t played it yet but it’s going to be so annoying to the table. I even ignored the bounce/landfall and stuff just to weaken it because it’s too strong otherwise for casual edh.
The only reason I made this deck was because I was arguing with one of my friends at our table about copies being too strong. With this deck you can literally empty your hand once they’re both on the field. The biggest problem I think it’s going to have is not drawing cards fast enough. However, one of the decks we’re playing against is a draw focused deck so I’m hoping that they build it with the draw cards that make us all draw.

Urza really deserved the number one spot on the list. Godo still requires 11 mana (minimum) and is extremely vulnerable to disruption, which red isn't necessary the color most suited to handle (particularly when 3 against 1), while Urza costs much less to enable much more, also giving you the best color to protect your board.
Godo is also powerful, but that works against itself as well, since its whole gameplan revolves around itself and the combo, makiing it an immediate target for all players, while the variety of options for Urza are also a form of protection, since it coming down doesn't herald the end of the game means that your opponent will not gang up on you immediately, giving you room to breathe and to plan properly.
All in all, this list (as all the others) suffers from the old issue of the ambiguous use of "best" for a mainly casual format. Like, Godo is definitely the most powerful red commander, but its aggressive combo nature means that he is reduced to high-power CEDH table, while Magda has a decent power level AND casual options, making it a more widespread and fun commander, and as such often arguably the better one. Likewise Tegrid is decently powerful, and loved for deckbuilding, but often loathed at actual table for its oppressive nature making not only the Yawgmoth family, but cards like Sheoldred and Sir Konrad (particularly the latter, since its punishing nature, cool design and power to just close games) much more beloved options.

Honestly there are quite a few mono-colored commanders that could be here but some are kind of limited because of price or accessibility. Selvala, Urza, Ashcoat, Balan, Auntie Blyte, Lita, Svyeluin, Baldin, Inferno of the Star Mounts, Giada, Goreclaw, and so many more are really strong.

Feel like this list is definitely missing Urza, Lord High Artificer. Urza Stax is pretty popular and powerful, much more than Orvar. If you’re going to make a list of the best Commanders, then it makes more sense to focus on CEDH, where Urza sees much more play than Orvar. Also, excluding mono-green Selvala feels strange, she’s still more powerful than anything other than the top two and Urza. In the same vein, Birgi and Heliod should definitely be somewhere on the list, and there are probably a couple of others I’m missing too.

Due to green being very good at tutoring and cheating out big creature. Not to mention almost all of Marwyn's big combos (staff of dominion/ any other mana dump untap) works with Salvala.

    • @CobaltDraco
      @CobaltDraco Год назад

Heck, she technically doesn't need to have any +1/+1 counters on her to start going infinite with the mantle. With a single use, she then has 3 power, which means she immediate matches the cost to use the mantle again. Each further use increases her power even more, resulting in more and more mana each time. All you need is two mana to start, seeing as she'll be able to tap for one mana baseline.

OK, now that's done: One of my favourite casual decks was a mono-black Kuro Pitlord.
It aimed to just gain tons of life, then spend it on Kuro to have the only creatures on the board at all times.
Pestilence Demon+Vampiric Link was probably the best combo in there, letting me deal with wide token decks and gain massive amounts of life against them, then use my commander to erase the bigger threats.
It was honestly one of my weaker decks (It severely lacked consistency against any deck with even moderate speed to it. A 9 mana commander was rough to get out, especially in black, and before cards like Burnished Hart existed for good colorless ramp, or Nykthos for mono colored advantages. And no, I could not afford a Cabal Coffers.) But when it DID work it was fun, and I enjoyed the "Looming threat" feel.

I never mentioned the pronunciation. Just noted that "horror" and "whore" sound almost identical in an American accent.

I feel there are lots of very powerful commanders that are missed out here. It has been a long time sence i have seen Yasin be anything. Omnath locus of mana is a much more powerful commanders in mono green Ashaya soul of the wild can make infant green mana very easy has has some interesting interactions. The fact that mono white is the weakest color in comander is true but the fact that Teshar was not here is crazy that deck is just combo win. Urza has been brought up and i think is much more powerful then orvar. Kranko decks for goblins. The list feels like lots of cards just were not on here

shouldn't this list consist of more cards used in the higher tiers of cEDH? most viable commanders in that list are well established at this point and while some of them here show up on the list most of them aren't the usual mono coloured canidats that come to mind. Urza and godo obviously and magda is a higher tier as well if i remember correclty but i don't remeber the rest being very prominent. Maybe i am just somewhat out of the loop though,

Yeah, there's no Urza, not cool.
Etali, Primal Storm should definitely have been on this list. If we're putting Godo on here, why not Razaketh, The Foulblooded? How about Azami, Lady of Scrolls or Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice? Selvala, Ashaya, Emry, Krenko, Teshar, hell even Tatsunari sees more play than Oswald or Tergrid do.
I still like playing Omnath though and just stockpiling mana to have a giant blowout with Finale of Devastation or troll people with Helix Pinnacle, but that's just me.

Personally, I would've put Toski and Kami of the Crestant Moon on here. Toski's ability, along with greens, ability to draw cards, and ramp allows you to barf out huge creatures. As soon as Old Gnawbone hits the field, it's over lol Blue is so good at controlling the battlefield that Kami will always give you an answer. Then you just draw a million cards throughout the game and play Ivory Tower and Vensur's Journal. Gain a ton of life and then lazer your opponents in the face with Aetherflux Reservoir. I've literally never lost a game with Kami as the commander. It doesn't even need to run counterspells.
