That you for the follow up and visual explanation. The best place for more Silicon (Si) I.M.O is when incorporated in Aluminium to create the Hypereutectic styled pistons.
Man, I have no idea where you find so many sportsters in such need of repair...But it makes for very informative videos.. I do enjoy watching how you go about finding and repairing them.
Another result is excess gets into blind holes and when screws are tightened can cause hydraulic effect when tightening and crack out aluminum around screw or bottom of hole. I have seen it numerous times in Sportster primary cover screws.
Thank you for your channel!!! I am an old retired viewer who loves my 75 Ironhrad. Can you please tell me any tricks you might have about removal and replacing the cam chest oil strainer without damaging the case?
The hole where the pin goes in is often peened over, use a Dremel tool or a drill and open the hole up a little. Then I usually just tear the screen out and reach in with a needle nose to push the pin out. Every once in a while the pin is loose enough that a magnet will pull it out so you can remove the screen without destroying it… Good luck and thanks for watching.
Yes I did exactly that on one of my Ironheads, but I had a horrible time getting the new strainer installed because the pin would not align with the inside (?) hole of the case. That hole seemed to be slightly lower and I ended up widening the hole of the screen to get the pin to find the case hole. Maybe because the new screen was after market? Anyway, thanks for the very quick response. It is very helpful.
Been working on Ironheads for 45 years. Seen and heard a lot of dumb. Dad bought a 75 that was frozen for 500 bucks. Pulled the bolt they had run in the inspection hole on the starter housing out and it cranked right up. Sold it for 1500.
It would be slightly interesting to talk to guy (or gal) who installed that oil pump and try to understand the logic behind SO MUCH sealant. Otherwise it is beyond comprehension.
I had a brief affair with Hylomar, Used to Swear By Indian Head(don'tSniff it), Tried Yamabond (it works but not on my Harley) But Gaska Cinch always works for me. Don't leave it in the cold because it will harden up like a porn star when you don't want it to. When Silly-Cone came out way back when it was like a miracle sealer/Glue! Used that crap on everything, How bad could it be they made Boobies out of it! I never used it on an engine myself. indian Head Shellac is such a pain in he ass to remove, but it worked better for me for sealing certain stuff at the time back in the 70's it could fill gaps if you were careful, Like repairing anything, being careful is always the key! Gas Oiler rocks! Too Bad Real Radiator Shops are going the way of the Dinosaurs! Nothing better than bringing gas tanks to the radiator shop! They'ld pressure test and seal em for cheap and I never had one leak Unlike Creem tank liner that is marginal at best for really old crap. All the best! My Old Ford took a dump in the hamburger drive through where I haven't been for over a decade last night! took me ten minutes to get my order and get the truck started and my burgers were warm when I got home after disconnecting the relay to shut the engine off. These new vehicles just don't work like that anymore and You can't work around solid state crap that can't handle 3 amps it seems the auto industry is trying to engineer mechanics out of existence by making shit way too complicated than it needs to be. Used to warm up the plugs and points on my pan to start easy in the winter popping the distributor cap and flipping the points by hand! Try that with a Solid State Mallory distributor! LOL! Fry that expensive chip in a heartbeat!
Ya know Hylomar was formulated by Rolls Royce for use on jet engines so it must be good, right? I went through a phase with that. I find Kreem tank sealer to be totally useless, inevitably it peels off leaving your tank leaking (again) but now full of sheets and flakes of disintegrating Kreem. Yeah, new bikes and cars are almost impossible for the average guy to work on. People ask me what ignition I recommend for their old Sporty, guess what my answer is? Points!!!

Always love your work Gary
Many thanks

You are absolutely correct. I have see ALL the primary screw bosses split open by screws being forced in to silly cone plugged holes!!!

No shortage of dumb out there....
Good times !! ..... again !!

How could somebody think all that sealant was a good idea??? Another commenter noted, "Seen and heard a lot of dumb."
Silicone Junkies :
That's the better oil pump, if he would've done that to the early little pump, it probably would sheer the key...
Anfd then you'd have a real ($$$$) problem...

Yes, I've seen Allen, very nice work he does. Sorry, I did not show the actual welding, just the finished product.
