      There are actually, believe it or not, some schools of classical singing that advocate that approach! I personally don't subscribe to it; just a fun factoid!
      Thanks for watching and enjoy!

      @@JeffRolka I reacted that way, because I found myself doing the exactly same thing last few months. It came to me intuitively, but very soon I found out that my head voice benefits from it (generaly speaking I am "bariton" but with higher reach)

    Was fun. Just played with it even in the higher ranges, as I was not really in rehearsal mode just watching some videos late at night and this came along and just couldn’t resist participating. Late night snack! Mustn’t have sounded too great as my cat came worried to check up on me 😂

    This one is a great beginning for 2023! I maintain that tenors live in the passaggio and this is great for working on ease of production as well as transitions. I also subscribe tt the idea that working on these notes opens up and frees the upper range. Question (of course): I understand the ideas of chest voice and head voice and falsetto (by which I mean men sounding like a woman when they sing) but is "middle voice" those notes between the first and second transition points? The same as what some call mixed voice or blend or what I think of as the passaggio ( a passage, as opposed to a step, between chest and head voices)? Looking forward to 2023 on your channel.

    • @JeffRolka

      Excellent! Thank you, David! Your question is absolutely excellent, and so I'll answer it in Questions from Comments (also - of course!) 43!
      In brief, though, you are right, kind of, for tenors and baritones, but 'middle voice' is more commonly used to describe the expanded space between primo and secondo passaggi in altos, mezzos, and sopranos.

    In many occasions, when going above the passaggio with vowels like ai as you use it a lot in this video, the mixed voice sound comes out super weak and breathy. And this also makes it so hard for me in songs when transitioning into mix with vowels. However, it doesn't happen when using Wee or Gee. What do you recommend to fix this issue? It would be a game changer to help achieve a solid Mixed Voice!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  7 месяцев назад +1

      This is a vowel alignment issue. You get a difference performance from the /i/ vowel (sounds like 'wee') thank you do from /e/ or probably /a/ as well.
      If you want your cricothyroid dominant singing voice (depending on definition that is synonymous with mixed voice and head voice) to be consistent then work on vowel alignment in your chest voice range. Practice appoggio breath management and vowel modification in the zona di passaggio, and then tackle the 'break' (in my videos 'the break' is called the secondo passaggio).
      Do that, and you'll sort out your upper register.

    Question for you, should your abdomen move much during this exercise or should vocal chords provide had closure

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  10 месяцев назад

      An interesting question. No, the abdomen shouldn't move too much, but neither should we rely entirely on vocal fold adduction. It's the balance between the two that short syllable exercises are really helpful at deducing.

    I have 2 questions that have been going around in my mind since I've been practicing. Being a tenor, my voice has become better and brighter. 1. Given the fact that baritones and tenors share part of the range, if i can't give my voice the depth I hear in a baritone ...is that because of being a tenor or it could be techniwue ? On a different note. I can reach very high notes with my head voice, without using falsetto. 2. Is there any danger to the vocal folds in going that high (imagine Michael Jackson's "Ben" )

      @@JeffRolka I want to add I do not strain to get high notes, you won't see me doing funny faces I let my vocal folds and the air to do the job. Of course, in many cases I could have gone with a falsetto but I find it thinner...of course my lower range is very limited.
