@ Oh yeah! I wanted to say also, I have seen other beginner RUclipsrs, and one will introduce the significant other saying they don’t like to be on camera or they don’t like to talk, and before you know they one who didn’t want to be on camera has taken over the show! 🤣
It's good to know these different types of kits are available, since not everyone can just build everything from scratch. You have a lot of land to clear, and the big project for the station itself, so I'm glad you've been able to make a home for yourselves (and your chickens, lol) in the mean time with these time-saving methods. I'd happily send you some California sunshine (solar panels everywhere), but today it's actually drizzling. The cabin with the tree lit up will be a fun place to celebrate. Happy Christmas to you all!
Tip 🥰: You will need extra hinges on The doors to The cabin. Best is three, and also stronger ones. As it is now, The doors will start sagging after a short time.
In a perfect world, a "she shed" with a mini fridge for cold drinks, a Kindle with my books, and a lamp to read by sounds ideal to me! I might not come out until Spring!!! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🎄🎄🎄🍾🍾🍾
Well done for completing the insulation of the Solar Panels, as you said just right for Christmas. May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and may 2025 be as successful as the past year, I bet you are proud of what you have achieved so far.
I fitted a similar system of 4 panels, 2 batteries, and an MPPT controller to give us a 24v system which tops up our existing emergency power supply last year. It has proved very effective giving us free power as well as being a back up for power cuts, which often occur here especially in bad winter weather. Despite not being in an ideal site they give enough to give us enough to keep light on for several hours and with some boost charge from our main solar system we get around 2.5 Kwh of free power each day which powers a kettle, microwave, and toaster or small radiant ring completely independent of the mains. Well worth the investment of both cash and time to install it, even in darkest North Yorks! You will likely be able to use a small power tool or charge phones etc. from the system if you fit a small inverter to give mains voltage. Just ensure you have a suitable battery fuse in the system and a reliable earth rod and trip in the mains side. You would be advised to get a good electrician to help on this but it's well worth the cost.
Teamwork makes the dream work! Merry Christmas to your family. It is an ongoing pleasure to watch you guys work at your renovation project. From Palm Desert California🙂😊
Season's greetings to all. I hope you are enjoying a fabulous and joyous Christmas. Best wishes in 2025. May the old station renovation reveal itself a great success. 🤓🥳
You'll have to periodically go up on the roof and clear away any debris like what we saw being removed at the start of this video, in order to maintain the best supply of photons reaching those electric cells.
Great system. May I suggest you run all those loose wires through plastic piping/conduit and attach it to the wall just so it's neater and not able to be caught and detached accidentally. Fantastic system. Have a very happy Christmas. Blessings from Robyn in Melbourne, Australia.
Anyone looking to do the same always connect the batteries to the solar charger mppt before you connect the solar panels or you can damage the solar charger and solar panels. These systems are nice but in the UK the average full sun per year is 1 to 2 hours which is one of the lowest. So always add extra solar panels if you can to allow for this. UK is bad for solar between November and February. Also try to power 12v devices off the battery direct instead of through the inverter your get an extra 10 or 15% more power (laptops, phones and lights can all be done cheaply). Good luck with the setup hope it works for you.
Chickens and off grid power. You'll be installing a composting toilet and growing your own veg and changing you last name to Goode soon! Merry Christmas to you (and the pooches). Thanks for sharing. ❤
Merry Christmas and I hope you have the greatest year ever. Hope Santa is good to Buddie and Winston. Winston's "Santa List" reads - Dear Santa, I want a ball, a ball, a ball and a ball, a ball, a ball, a red ball, a ball.....
There is now some thought that (but watch the wind) that panels should be mounted more vertically ( particulary in hotter climates), grabs a bit more light which is the important thing
Yes to change there position in sunny day summer you can study the sun at this time of year and how the sun will be higher in the sky by May so a little more higher to catch the sun ❤❤❤
It's now a self-sufficient cabin! You may not be able to run a refrigerator for very many continuous hours, but LED lights and a laptop don't draw much. You'll be out there for a few evenings a week, and even if the panels are partly shaded, if they have a day or two of sun to recharge the battery it will work fine.
Merry, Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025. Thank you again for sharing your video. Very interesting. Regards from South Africa ( Very hot weather we are having. East London. Expecting a thunderstorm this afternoon).
Looks really good and nice in a ready to go kit but I clicked the link and found the wattage consumption figures a bit ambitious and very missleading like the 400watt kettle and the 150watt fridge! or am I missing something?
The solar panels need to be fit where they will receive maximum sun. You have trees all around your cabin. How much shade doyour trees cast on the roof of your cabin? It might have been better to wait till summer for the optimal placement of the panels.
No it’s ecoworthy, we don’t plan to have a fridge, it just says it can power one. We are just using it for lights. It’s working great so far, even in this terrible weather 🌦️
@@SouthFloridaSound Perhaps you're referring to different wires than me. According to the material at the product's website, the inverter provides 230v at 50Hz (UK standard). I don’t think I’ve heard Gil talk as much in all previous episodes combined as he did in this episode! YAY!

He does not like talking on camera, thank you this encouragement really helps

I’m glad he’s relaxing a little and talking to us!

I’d love to swap some dry sunny Arizona, for rainy cool days from Wales.

We are going to box it in, probably in wood, keep it in keeping with the cabin 👍
@theoldstationrenovation great idea. 🙂

Not sure about the composting toilet. We have visit a lovely campsite that uses these which we love but don't know if we could do this all the time :)

I only say this having just finished working in Taffs Well for 3 years
Very awesome kit. I hope you will remember to caulk the screws where you put them into the roof... worst place for leaks. Happy holidays

Looks really good and nice in a ready to go kit but I clicked the link and found the wattage consumption figures a bit ambitious and very missleading like the 400watt kettle and the 150watt fridge! or am I missing something?
Merry Xmas to all. Doddle as we say up here. 1 minor point. Did we seal the panels when drilling through the roof and walls.?
Yes, sealant used to stop water coming in.
The solar panels need to be fit where they will receive maximum sun. You have trees all around your cabin. How much shade doyour trees cast on the roof of your cabin? It might have been better to wait till summer for the optimal placement of the panels.
Some, that’s the least shady area and it’s south facing, working well so far ☀️
Did you take our advice regarding the log burner ?
We have finished the fire proofing and it is working brilliantly, been warm and cozy over the Christmas period.
Don’t expect too much power in wintertime.
It’s not too bad, hopefully store some up when we’re not using it
Made the roof water tight and then drill holes in it. I would have mounted it on the deck or on a poll.
Sealed with sealant to keep it water tight 💦
🔨🔨
You could have cut the cables to length and encased them in conduit. It'd look a lot neater.
Going to box them in behind a bar 😁
Won't those trees block a lot of the sunlight in the Spring & Summer when they leaf out?
Some, we put them on the least shaded part of the roof
Severely underpowered for your plans to power a fridge. Maybe something to cool 4 cans of soda... Is this kit from Lucas?
No it’s ecoworthy, we don’t plan to have a fridge, it just says it can power one. We are just using it for lights. It’s working great so far, even in this terrible weather 🌦️
Be careful, the wires coming from the battery look way to small for 600 watts.
They look fine to me. They need to carry just 2.6A at the UK standard of 230v. Whether 600W is enough in the long run is a mystery for the future.
@@thomasstambaugh5181 Nope, the wires from the battery are 12 volt. They should have 8 AWG as a minimum.
@@SouthFloridaSound Perhaps you're referring to different wires than me. According to the material at the product's website, the inverter provides 230v at 50Hz (UK standard). That's the 2.6A that I cited.
The other wires are carrying DC and are solid. I make the perhaps rash assumption that the manufacturer has sized them correctly for this product.
So are you living in the cabin and girls living in the other place?
No just using the cabin for some extra space
Just a suggestion, stop using a broom and use a leaf blower. Its much easier. 😊
We don’t have one 😬 broom it is for now 🧹
@theoldstationrenovation ahh sorry thot it might help. Ty for the videos.
Why not just get an electrician to run a wire from your current setup? You're not off grid and this will end up saving nothing long term.
Currently we have no power in the station, we wanted something we could use now before the electric work, the solar is working great.
