just want to say thank you. after weeks of 05 Malibu slow or no starts and realizing it was not the theft system I was looking through all the videos and found yours. Your detailed explanation of the symptoms led me to take a shot at the ignition switch. Three days later we have instant starts. Thanks for your diligence and investigations. great work

(See update below)We've been experiencing this mysterious issue with my wife's car, a 2004 Monte Carlo SS for the last few months. We've been nervous about my wife driving it anywhere since it happens without any warning leaving her stranded somewhere until it decides it's ready to start up again, sometimes hours later, again mysteriously fixing itself and starting up and running fine. Our mechanic has been unable to diagnose the issue causing this and was just as puzzled as you were in dealing with the inconsistency of the occurrence of the problem. We will share this video with our mechanic and see if he can get the same results as you. Thank you so much for making this video, even if it proves not to be our issue, it was well done and I enjoyed hearing you explain your troubleshooting methodology. We can all take a lesson from that. I will update this comment later when we find out how our own issue turns out.
(Update) We do believe that this was the issue as we have since replaced the ignition switch, (all on my own and with great ease I might add), and the car has started every time for several weeks now. In fact, it seems to fire off much more quickly than it ever did before. The process of replacing the ignition switch was very straight forward after watching a well made video on here about it. I went slowly and it took me about two hours in total and the part was cheap from a local source. We are very happy with the result and are back to driving our great car with confidence. Thanks for sharing this great video with everyone.

Thank you. My daughter called me from half way across the country, stuck in a parking lot, car wouldn't start, cranks and cranks. I walked her through checking for fuel pressure, the connections at the ignition module, checking the air intake for blockage (she'd been driving in the desert). I was wracking my brain fuel check air check, gotta be a spark issue. The car had been running right up to parking in the lot, no check engine light issues... I thought Theft system? She said the check engine light came right on. I had her try the chicken dance (no go) TI started for a second with starter fluid... then I asked about the Theft System light. Had her turn the key, bump the starter and wait ten minutes. We were telling bad jokes waiting when the Theft System light went out. She got excited and tried to start the car, and... she's back on the road all giggles and smiles. Thank you again. It's these little sequences that are so important to have in your mind. No way I would have known the sequence if your video wasn't here. Thank you again and again. Now... how to bypass the seed chip before that fails...

I just got the hook up. I like this talk/walk/source/cited/diagram/procedural/function checking and tracing of the job. True mechanic Sir I salute you. Place a electronic payment button if you don’t already have one because you are the standard and a set example for how to video logging. Much appreciated. I might email you a couple questions if I can’t find the look the answers up myself. I know you enjoy these difficult diagnosis. That was like car brain surgery. I’m impressed.

Hey Jim just wanted to thank you big time for your thorough explanation of the troubleshooting you did! I ended up having the same issue without knowing it and have spent many maddening hours trying to figure out intermittent voltages and failures of the anti-theft system. I've got a 2001 Chevy Malibu with Passlock and have been having no end of problems with the anti-theft system and the car refusing to start (cranks, then weird dash indicators and no ignition). I've tried every suggested method of resetting the system, new keys, and was just getting ready to implement the hack with a toggle switch on the Passlock Signal wire. The vehicle has been dead for a week while I've been trying to reset the system. Before cutting into ignition wires, I decided to check online one last time and fortunately came across your video. I managed to reach up under the dash and push/wiggle the ignition switch connectors around to reseat them, and the car started right up! Thanks to you, I'm pretty sure the issue is the ignition switch housing connectors. Thanks for the video!!! For all those who are impatient and have a Malibu, take the time to watch this video! It is likely a solid investment of your time if only for the insight into the electrical system issues with this vehicle. This isn't the first time I've run into intermittent and hard to diagnose electrical system problems (turn signals/hazard relay, and AC panel failures as well). Thanks Jim!

+Steve Wurster First let me say thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought of my video. This car did drive me crazy with the intermittent no start:( But I felt really happy to finally figure it out:)I hope I saved you some time and most important money.Jim

+jimthecarguy Jim, I have a friend with a 2001 Malibu with this exact problem. She's already spent a ton of money between getting towed multiple times and diagnostics, battery, alternator (which was going bad anyway), and even a replaced fuel pump (Her mechanic was not quite as concerned about doing that job as you were) but still has the problem. When this happens to her again, I am going to have her do what Steve here did and if that fixes the problem then we know to replace the ignition switch. Thanks for taking the time to not only solve the problem for your customer but share the information with the rest of us. You're a life saver!

Thank You for all the extra effort in diagnosing this crazy problem! Anyone can change parts & tell the customer some bullshit about five different parts they "had" to change that you knew had nothing to do with the fix! So the customer has paid for a bunch of parts they didn't need because the mechanic / technician they took their vehicle to was nothing more than a parts changer! I have seen so many times where the computer doesn't give the so called mechanic an exact code, they are lost & that's sad! A true mechanic /tech needs to understand how to chase a problem sometimes one component at a time &'rule out the false & or multiple codes! In this case, no code! Great job! This one calls for a huge "At A Boy"!

Thanks for the feed back, I just saw alot of people that do that on utube, wasn't sure if that is a good alternative. I'll just change the ignition. I figured that is the best way to go. I have an 07 Malibu. I've been having the same issue, took it to my mechanic I changed both the fuel pump and water pump, got the car yesterday took my kids for a ride and the same thing before changing both parts happened again. It was riding smooth when I parked and turned it off, I tried to turn it back on it tries to roll over but doesn't, battery died, car didn't overheat nothing. We were stranded. Took the car to my mechanic today by tow truck, he can't find nothing wrong. I watched him check everything still nothing... Right now this is my last resort if not I give up. Thanks for the video hope it works.

    Hey, Jim
Very informative video. It might end up saving me god only knows how much money $600? I have a 2004 chevy classic (malibu classic?), Anyway, within the last month, it randomly didn't start after driving to the store, going inside and coming back out to go home.
Had car towed to shop, couple hours later when they went to check it, car acted completely normal. They tested fuel components, pump ect -- no codes, no issues found. Obviously, no issues were found because car wasn't acting up when they went to test it. Car started and drive like a dream for another two weeks or so. Then, this morning, went to start it, car cranks just fine, just acting like it's not getting fuel/spark. Not sure what injection pulse is, but it's probably not getting that either.
The car has 167,000 miles and has been maintained flawlessly.Car has been sitting all day, tried to start numerous times throughout day with no luck. It's definitely not the passlock system because theft light isn't blinking and already tried the relearn procedure. Car was driving just fine just the night before no problem. No indications that it would be the fuel pump going bad.
I have the stereo unpugged, front plastic trim removed, basically all of the stuff you would need to remove to replace the ignition switch. All of a sudden, since today, the car doesn't make the ding ding ding sound that it should when the driver door is open with the key in. Another thing that might point to bad ignition switch -- the light that illuminates the shifter to show you what gear it's in (automatic transmission) has not been working for many months. I read somewhere the ignition switch controls power to that light and dash lights/gauges?
    I've ordered this part:
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C7YKHK/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
would that be the right part like you discussed in this video? I'm planning to just replace only the part that you took apart towards the end of your video. I'm planning to reuse the cylinder thing that the key goes into that slides into the housing, which I believe has the passlock chip on it because your video basically says it's the ignition switch is bad -- the part I ordered? Is this correct?
The switch that you took apart in the video controls the fuel pump, spark and all of that stuff at the same time -- is that correct? Also, has your fix held up for the customer? Thank you so much for your time!
    -Julian

jimthecarguy Hey, not sure about the check engine light. There are no codes in the computer for the issue. I think all of the lights that are normally on when the key is in "On" position ( not start) stay on. Is there any surefire way I could check the fuel pump or would the bad ignition make it look like the fuel pump and other components are all not working?
Also, did you see my comment about the shift selector light not working? Is that connected to the ignition? Also, I found another video for a 2002 impala where the guy fixed the same issue by swaping in a new ignition. He took the ignition apart in great detail, like you did, but in his video he says the contacts on the pieces of metal in the ignition should be silver and shiny, and they were black. The contacts that supplied power to the components that weren't working, like the cruise control, were black.
What are your thoughts about the blackened contacts? Maybe you could run a multimeter on the contacts to see if they conduct electricity differently than the silver, shiny contacts?

Jim The Car Guy, I have a 03 Chevy Malibu the 3.1 engine, that I just bought, my problem is the opposite mine is the Anti-Theft, car will crank but won't start of course I thought it was a fuel pump to, so to find out I guess that's common problems for these cars, so when to RUclips four answers, and turn the key on the anti-theft system flash oh, you got to wait 10 minutes to stop flashing turn the key to off position, and then start the car and it started oh, so therefore I was happy I thought my car was fixed, but no it didit again oh, so watching your video I'm going to put a new ignition switch and I think my problem will be cured I hope, thank you Jim The Car Guy, from Brighton Colorado...

I had similar issue. Sometimes turning over the key, if the check engine light didn't turn on it wouldn't start. Wait a couple minutes, turn over the key and when the check engine light was on it would start. I thought my issue was the same as the above, but first replaced the crank sensor that had 297,000 miles on it. After replacement it took about 10 starts to reset the computer and I've had no issue whatsoever with it starting up. My 2005 Chevy Malibu Classic with 297,000 miles had been getting poor gas mileage for the several months. Down from the normal 29-33 MPG to 22-24 MPG. No computer codes displayed to alert any issues, so I've been at a loss. A view of the spark plugs show an excellent healthy motor. Recently, it became difficult to start and the RPM's would drop slighlty when turning on the A/C, but it wouldn't go dead. The crank sensor plugs in with one bolt. Now, the mileage has returned to 29-33 MPG. and it starts every time. This said, the video above is great information to know, and was my second plan of action if the problem didn't stop.

Jim I have a intermiten crank no start issue, my 2002 GMC envoy has been in shop 2/12 weeks out of almost month I've only had it.Its not battery or starter( not sure about selenoid though). When it does start, its very strong. When i try to start it n it just crank but no start, when i turn the key off,i hear a littlr sizzle from under the hood.It dont sound normal. It seems like it isn't getting gas but my mechanic keeps telling me that all this week,it has been starting for him n can't diagnose issue until it cranks but wont start again.Last weekend a friend n I went to the store n got stranded for almost two hours,he n I googled like I always do n he found something that said try this,I was so frustrated n just called a cab,my friend says to me,I'm finna get this started,I was by the car n I assume he turned ignition to start or on position, went under the hood, took off green cap, used a key or something to push in button n truck fired right up.I thought that is was fuel line but when I told my mechanic what happened, he paid me no mind n that had nothing to do with it,etc.I showed him under the hood what he pushed,he said no,that's just a vacuum line n shouldn't have anything to do with why the truck cranks but no start intermittently. Could u please help me.Any ideas.I see why the person sold the truck, but I'm not a quitter,I'm very curious as to finding the issue. my very first car did this same issuen no one knew what is was so I let someone talk me into buying a switch to override the ignition n go under hood n turn switch to start it that was,so embarrassing.Eventually got another car.My mechanic saying its got good fuel pressure but said he had to fix fuel pressure regulator case it had gas n it n wasn't suppose to n changed out ignition switch.According to my mechanic it has started everyday the many times he has tried throughout day and week. Please help!!!

Having issues with my '04 Impala 3.8L. It ran then didn't run, crank but no start. Replaced the ignition switch, started right up. Did that for awhile every time after. Back to a no start situation after wiring in a resistor to bypass the security message on the dashboard. Relearn process is a pain not even sure I'm doing it right because the message doesn't seem to want to go away. Could use some real guidance here...

I also have an 04 classic and Friday I had started it to scrape the windshield off and about 5 minutes it just died, I tried starting it back but the first 2 tries it sputtered and died and after that it just cranks. I changed the fuel pump relay and that didn't help any. The check engine light stays on while cranking and the theft light does goes off . I have had problems in the past with the theft system going off randomly. I am going to pull the ignition and wiggle the wires , check for tightness and see if that helps. If the messing with the ignition doesn't change anything where should I go from there? Thanks for the help and the video.

  • @jkstdstang
    @jkstdstang 3 года назад

We have a 2001 gmc yukon and it has an issue with the security system i believe. Sometimes you have to jiggle the key to get the security light in the dash to go from red to yellow to start the vehicle or a after driving it to get the light to turn yellow when removing the key otherwise the door tone will keep beeping and the battery will need a jump in the morning. Im hoping to just replace the ignition tumbler thinking its worn and not recognizing the key/signal sometimes.

Jim, I'm having a similar problem I got a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 V6 . I guess like a million codes came up on the scanner crank no start runs for a second and a half. Change the fuel pump fuel filter both crankshaft position sensors camshaft sensor fuel pressure regulator. New wires serpentine belt. I'm getting fuel to the Schrader valve and my pressure is up 50 pounds worth supposed to be. I did some research on a 3400 3.4 engines GM well first thing I saw it was passlock security but all the reset procedures and diagnosis for that is a blinking security light my security light stays solid red. So I recently found out that they're also ignition switch is acceptable which also runs off the computer and sends signal. But instead of going to head and cutting into my wires and BCM I'm going to go for the ignition switch if that works I'll try to respond back and put that in there hopefully I'll be helpful to thank you for sharing your knowledge and very good video I appreciate it my grandfather was a mechanic and I'm working on my own car I have the most most up most respect for mechanics now

Hello, I have a 2007 Hummer H3 that will not start all the time. When it doesn't start the gas gauge and temperature gauges do not work. All fault lights appear on dash. When driving it will do it and the car still runs. The speedometer, tach, miles, gas gauge, temp don't work and also all fault lights show and display on warning display. I replaced passlock sensor only and it still does it. I put new relay in RUN crank and it work for a day. Then driving it messes up again. Just wondered if your problem could be the same? No one has ever posted a problem like mine. Thanks for your time. I did post a video and no one comments also on a hummer forum. No luck yet.

bayview auto repair - thank you for the video. I'm having the same problem with my 05 chevy tahoe ex cop car, u can hear the pump priming upon turning the ignotion switch and car cranks and fires right up no problem, or upon turning the ignition the pimp won't prime and car won't start. if the car starts there's a chance it will completely stall out and I lose power and have to pull over and try to restart it again ( normally I turn ignition again and again but don't crank until I hear the pump prime) then starts no problem, ( but chances are it will suddenly die or it wont). only code I had reading was a p0496, so I changed the purge valve and ignition switch (which turned off my 8 month long check engine light). drove fine and a week or two started dying again (so I changed the fuel pump relay yesterday). again this morning it stalled twice on road. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S HAPPENNING!!!! new purge valve, new ignition switch, new pump relay and mechanic diognostic reader doesn't read a thing even if it doesn't start after crank. bad ground somewhere? maybe? bad wiring? what the HECK could it be?!?!.

Hey Jim, Very good video! I have a 1999 pontiac grand am and I have a twist though! When I shut the car off it stays running? I changed the back of the switch like you did, but still same issue!! do you think its in the tumbler itself? The key does'nt work unless you move it around when you start it, you have to apply gas or it wont start! The battery light stays on and now the airbag too and the fans to the cooling system stay on till it drains the battery. Also the parking lights are on too!! The only way i can shut it off is to pull the coil wire each time i drive it, not sure what else it could be. Any help would be great!! When I turn the key before starting I notice i have low voltage it starts up fine the first thing in the morning then when I hop back in it after I'm leaving the destination it don't want to start without idle dropping completely and car shutting off so I hold the gas and put it in drive/ reverse . It don't enjoy when I turn the wheel at low speeds when I do this . Could it be the ignition module ? I've replaced alternator battery and ignition module and nearly everything on here and still no luck . I didn't have this problem when I first had it but it did misfire but 1 grand later the misfire went away then a year later this problem hapend .

I have a 2005 Chevy Impala I have similar problems, I turned the car off went into the store came out and the car cranked hard and the Security Light came on, but started, I thought the battery, but I still had 10 miles to go and parked it for 2 hours and it started... This time it started rough, but when I went to start it, it made a sound like it wanted to turn over then everything reset and the clock said 12:00... I went thru the settings but didn't see the option for turning off the anti theft control. I jumped with a powerful jump pack and fired up, but I don't know if it's the root of the problem yet so I put a charger on it... I don't think it's the battery yet because the light didn't dim that much while turning the engine... It's late so tomorrow i'll check it with a voltmeter, thanks

    Hey Jim,
Great video and very thorough. Looking for some advice. I have a 2009 Chevy Express 3500 with a 4.8L in it. This is a customer's vehicle that came in with an original no crank, no start condition. After my original diagnosis, I informed my service advisor that it was a VATS issue and the key needed to be reprogrammed. So they reprogrammed the key and the vehicle now cranks but does not start. I checked fuel pressure thinking a pump failure and there was no pressure so I checked all fuses as well as swapped relays for the pump and still no start. After informing my service advisor of this he wanted to buy a new fuel pump and put it in so I complied. After installing the new pump still cranks but does not start with no pressure. Only code is for an EVAP purge canister solenoid which would not cause a no start issue. I am at a loss now. I did find out that they purchased a used pump instead of new one but definitely do not want to drop the tank again if I do not have to. Not the best electrical troubleshooter that is for sure but been a mechanic for many years. Any thoughts to begin my electrical diagnosing of the switch...?
