I'm in the minority in really liking the finale of season 3. Throughout the show we got plenty of big chaotic firefights, to the point where it got a bit stale. The season 3 finale instead has the group outsmarting their enemies by luring them in with a trap and then letting loose. The strategic ambush felt more like something you'd seen in the Breaking Bad/BCS universe and I didn't mind having the group win simply because they were smarter. Plus even if you were disappointed that we didn't get a big action scene we still got it a little later with the Governor anyways so everyone is happy. And on a side note, I don't think the Governors season 4 story was just redoing his origin story. The theme of the season 4, if not the whole show, is about being too far gone, as the episode title indicates. Hershel, who acts as the groups moral compass, talks to Rick in the premiere about some people being too far gone. Rick seemingly almost was but now tried to come back after the events of season 3 by taking up farming and avoiding violence. The Governor initially tried to do the same with his family but as time went on it became clear that he was too far gone.

Sad to lose Herschel in such a cruel, brutal way, and his death is pretty much unavenged but it kept me on the edge of my seat cuz Rick faced an impossible dilemma but neither man was going to budge. Normally such a scenario ends with some incredulous rescue but nope, the tank sealed the prison's fate. It was waaaaay better to break the conflict into 2 parts
Too Far Gine is literally listed amongst one of the best episodes of the show. Just watch The Thrifty Typewriters video "Why Too Far Gone was the perfect ending to the prison arc"
I think most the changes were good to the governor, but I completely agree they dragged it out way too much. That season 3 finale was the turning point for me, where the show stopped being good.
The Governor chopping off Hershel's head was one of the greatest moments in Walking Dead history. It was a shock death back when shock deaths were still original. You want a villain that didn't work? Try Terminus.
I liked the Governor's arc, and was really invested at the time, when his character diverged so drastically from his comic counterpart. Comic Governor was a memorable character, but I don't think he would have worked nearly as well in the tone of the show. The barn storyline though, that dragged on way too long. It didn't need to be a blip like in the comics, but the herd trampling the farm was very overdue.
He was a fresh divergence from the book, I didn't need to see that Governor, but he stayed too long and the story dragged for the sacrifice of more episodes.
I completely agree S4 E8 should have been season 3’s finale and if I where to rank all seasons of TWD season 3 would probably be in the bottom half because it easily had the potential to be the best season of the show
I disagree. The governor was the last good villain. Negan was way too cartoony and destroyed the show. Yea I said it. Idc how popular he was. He needed to leave the show seasons ago.
If any villain in TWD overstayed their welcome, the Governor would've been the LAST villain I expected, do you have so few ideas that you need to make stuff up to get content?
The Governor is a great character going from a charismatic golf playing leader (not entirely sane btw) to a Psychopathic non compassionate killing machine! His arc was great and honestly WAY better than Negan's. He brought a dynamic to Rick and the others that made the survival aspect of the show terrifying. He is not someone you would want to come across in the apocalypse which you can say about all the villains but this man had no remorse in the end. He was great.
It was done perfectly, Governor is the best walking dead villain when it comes to the tv show and I really really hope that they adapt the first two Governor novels as a 2 season limited series with David Morrissey before he gets any older
I disagree season 4 was one of the best additions to the tv version of the character and makes him stand out from his comic counterpart to see him be broken then built up again, and for him to have his failed redemption arc where he falls back to his old ways.
While I agree with the first part about S3 being super anticlimactic, I remember really loving the Governor episodes in S4. I remember the debate on whether or not he could be redeemed, if they would change the show up from the comics. His two bottle episodes were very interesting at the time and “Too Far Gone” is one of the top five TWD episodes.
Opining that the tv adaptation should've been closer to the one-dimensional villain stereotype, then complaining when said adaptation became too much like the one-dimensional stereotypical villain. Not something I expected from this channel.
I totally agree with this. The Governor was fine, but the decision to extend him for another half season wasn't. The arc should've ended on a peak, but instead it muddled on. I never liked the first half of season 4 (barring the midseason finale). The disease plot bored me and the show just felt like it was adding filler until it got back to the delayed prison attack plot point. In retrospect, this was a red flag. Most of the problems this show had was from extending plotlines way farther than they needed to be. The amount of times this show chose to tread water rather than get to the next plot point gradually became infuriating. As the seasons went on the quality of the writing went down overall, and mistakes like this went from easy to forgive to impossible to sit through.
How many shrooms you on? Governor is the best TWD villain by a mile. Replace all mentions of Governor in this video with Negan and you got yourself a correct video.
Disagree. The Govenor arc in the Tv show was perfect. Not to long and not to short Edit: 6:40 it happened in the mid season final with months to wait for the show to continue there for it didnt felt wrong or weird at all
I think the breaking down and rebuilding of the Governor before the climax was great. It showed that even when he had a second chance to start fresh and carve a new life; he was too far gone already.
I think this is the first time I’ve disagreed with a take on this channel, that’s not a bad thing just a difference in taste I never read the comics (been trying to get the hardback collections tho) and after learning about comic Governor, I actually think I like the show version better Nor did I think he dragged on too long, Negan absolutely dragged to long and then hooked up with Maggie from what I heard (I was genuinely upset when I heard that, it feels so wrong)
I nearly never say this, but I'm really glad I didn't knew the source material before I watched the adaptation. David Morrissey was so good it was exactly the plot that demanded he went total crazy at the end. He was the most complex TWD...well I was gonna say villain but he truly wasn't. He was a leader, made a small village actually functioning, did factual research against the plague, and had emotional connections also. Not even one antagonist put this up again, hell even our protagonists either. It was the first ending for me when they killed him. Sad that the showrunners didn't do a The Boys kinda spin and threw the comics in the bin to create a coherent and logical story.
this just makes no sense. I understand your points but it almost feels like you haven't watched the show. the governor, almost unanimously didn't overstay his welcome at all.
The thought the way they did the governor was great tbh, yeah sure at the time waiting over a year to see the final show down did suck but it was worth it.
I completely disagree that was honestly one of the most climactic moments of the show when the Governor rolled up to the prison and decapitated Herschel. Nerdstalgic L
The only antagonist that was enjoyable to watch for more than one season was Shane because you get to see him start as a good guy being someone you could root for and slowly watch him become darker when faced with increasingly desperate situations that slowly strip away more and more of his humanity - it also cuts deeper than conflicts with other antagonists due to his familiarity to the group as it’s original de facto leader and his complicated relationship with the Grimes family
no idea why they constantly refused to adapt the comic writers are so far up their own butts they think they can do better than the ip they are using its sad
He definitely didn’t overstay his welcome, he’s the last TWD villain id say that about, not just because he’s the best villain by a mile but because the others are all mid and drug out. Negan is good but other than his introduction which is the best character introduction in TV history he’s a 6.5-7/10 character overall, The governors arcs are incredible
It's true that the end of season 3 feels anticilimactic and the Governor's return feels disjointed, but I do like the character development Rick has in the show, with him becoming "softer" during his farmer arc and thus asking Philip for peace. Early season 4 is also the golden age of the prison, where it's population was the highest. It's basically when things were running the smoothest. I always enjoyed that.
I lost interest in The Walking Dead comic when Negan was introduced. I basically saw him as The Governor 2.0. As bad and sadistic as the Governor was, Negan was doubly so. It was just more of the same.
Nah I disagree, I liked his arc quite a lot, especially over Neagan’s arc. His dragged on for so long and it killed the show for me. Along with the writing decisions to kill off certain characters yet neagan was given a whole new character development and you know the rest.
I agree in some points. But i also agree with the rest of the comments saying negan was dragged out more. I really enjoyed him in the comics. Overall I really enjoyed TWD as a whole.
it honestly makes me so happy to see the amount of comments that are like "uh...wut" lol i thought his arc was amazing. if you view it as a "second origin", then yes, its odd. but to me, that was the governor all along. his own worse enemy in search of a purpose, and when guided by a purpose, willing to do anything
Hard disagree, although the season 3 finale is clunky, I think season 4 Gov. is great and really boils down who he is, gives him a glimmer of hope, he changes becomes a good man but because he's too far gone, he's lost so much of himself he reverts right back to the monster he was before and that rage, that monster is too busy trying to steal a home whilst his new daughter is being bitten by a walker. Now he's lost two daughters, he coldly shoots her in the head and says screw it just kill them all. He's finally fully broken but this time it's his downfall. I think it's great for his character and fits in well for the theme of season 4 of being "too far gone" from the actions a survivor must do to survive.
Loved the governor, his arc was fantastic and i enjoyed yhe adaptation. I think too far gone and live bait a some of the greatest episodes of the whole series, the death of herschel n the governor are major. The splitting up of the group made them stronger and gave characters depth. It was very good, so i diagree with u, the governor was around just ling enuff and basically dies on the show where he dies in the graphic novel
The Walking Dead should have been a Rated R TV Show following the exact storyline from the comics. It would have blown everyone's mind and be the best show ever.
highly disagree. too far gone is one of the best episodes of the series and i loved seeing the fall of the governor arc. him trying to rebuild himself into a better person and then realizing he’s “too far gone” was a fantastic character arc. i don’t think he over stayed his welcome at all, he stuck around just right and left right at the right time. it actually helped understand him better as a character. they turned a basic tyrant from the comics into a deep really wonderfully written character with actual depth, sure maybe the governor was a worse person in the comics but that doesn’t make him better or more interesting. so i completely disagree with this.
Eh this video feels like a miss... I always thought he was the best out of all of TWD villains, and this era is still one of my favorite parts to rewatch. If anything bothered me about this era it was Andrea.

You're tripping. Staying faithful to the unbelievable comic bullshit is what killed the show, once Negan was introduced.
The Governor chopping off Hershel's head was one of the greatest moments in Walking Dead history. It was a shock death back when shock deaths were still original. You want a villain that didn't work? Try Terminus.
Terminus went too quick
I highly disagree with this take. I’m completely fine with how his story went
Negan and his hip-breaking became insufferable after two episodes.
@@Olderaccount17 Exactly. He was kept on way too long because JDM was playing him. He should have been in the show 2 seasons max.
@@tsarnicholasii6679 Right. He honestly brought on the downfall of the show.
No
@@Olderaccount17 haha oh my god i would roll my eyes every time he'd pop up.. 😂
I preferred the Governor over Negan as a villain because he wasn't over the top when acting.
If any villain in TWD overstayed their welcome, the Governor would've been the LAST villain I expected, do you have so few ideas that you need to make stuff up to get content?
Too far gone is one of the best episode
So strange. I am rewatching The Walking Dead again (up until season 6), and i have just finished episode 8 where he dies. This is timely.
The Governor was always my favorite walking Dead villain. Negan on the other hand . . .
I disagree season 4 was one of the best additions to the tv version of the character and makes him stand out from his comic counterpart to see him be broken then built up again, and for him to have his failed redemption arc where he falls back to his old ways.
All this time, while the tv series was produced, I had no idea it originated as one of image's comic books.
Not something I expected from this channel.
governor goated
The Governor, as well as the first half of season 4, is possibly the best written aspect of the entirety of the franchise. Real bad take.
I won't lie I did like this character. He was extremely tragic and fast burning villain that fizzled out just as fast as he showed up
How many shrooms you on? Governor is the best TWD villain by a mile. Replace all mentions of Governor in this video with Negan and you got yourself a correct video.
So in comics he was just generic villian with no reasons. So that makes the new one with story and arch worst ?
Disagree. The Govenor arc in the Tv show was perfect. Not to long and not to short
Edit: 6:40 it happened in the mid season final with months to wait for the show to continue there for it didnt felt wrong or weird at all
I havent watched a second yet, but I audibly groaned every time it seemed like this arc was coming to an end, and it didn't.
The Governor does have a story arc. Read "The Road To Woodbury." It's a great read and you get to see how he becomes such a piece of shit.
I think the breaking down and rebuilding of the Governor before the climax was great. It showed that even when he had a second chance to start fresh and carve a new life; he was too far gone already.
im glad to see most of the comment section disagrees with this
I think this is the first time I’ve disagreed with a take on this channel, that’s not a bad thing just a difference in taste
I never read the comics (been trying to get the hardback collections tho) and after learning about comic Governor, I actually think I like the show version better
Nor did I think he dragged on too long, Negan absolutely dragged to long and then hooked up with Maggie from what I heard (I was genuinely upset when I heard that, it feels so wrong)
Great video.
Glad I read the comments, because I could've swore everyone loved tv Governor.
"Wore out his welcome"
I couldnt disagree more, enjoy the view and comment, not watching further. Have a good day.
Bro has clearly never seen the show if he doesn’t like the governor
DUDE YOU MUSTVE BEEN HIGH. THE GOVERNOR WAS ACTUALLY THE BEST CHARACTER! NEGAN UNFORTUNATELY WAS THE ONE WHO RUINED THE WHOLE SHOW.
no idea why they constantly refused to adapt the comic writers are so far up their own butts they think they can do better than the ip they are using its sad
I didn’t flench until Carl died. I didn’t this about it once, I was totally invested and stopped cold turkey. That took out the story.
Weird i liked this villain. More interesting then alot of the protagonists like Ezekiel and whoever the trash people were in season 7.
Nah I disagree, I liked his arc quite a lot, especially over Neagan’s arc. His dragged on for so long and it killed the show for me. Along with the writing decisions to kill off certain characters yet neagan was given a whole new character development and you know the rest.
6:25 I never understood that logic. They wanted to take the prison from Ricks group.... by destroying it.
He didn’t want the prison, he wanted to kill Rick out of revenge from Rick embarrassing him last season
The Governor did nothing wrong
HUH ⁉️⁉️⁉️
I think The Governor stayed in the show for the PERFECT amount of time. Anything less wouldn't be enough, and anything more would be too much.
On Spanish TV we got season 4, then 3, then 5. I assume the earlier seasons had also been shown. Perhaps even in order. I tuned out before the 5th season finished.
