  • As usual with old gear, you want to use it and it does not work as expected.
This old Icom IC-745 Ham Radio Transceiver is one of my spare radios and only being used occasioanally. My main radio , the Icom IC-751A needed some major work, so i wanted to hook this one up to stay QRV for the time, but found that the PTT wire on the Accessory Connector did not work, so i won't be able to key the PA .
There is another Output (Relay) on the back, but i use the one on the Aux connector as this also allows keying the PTT via an external relay which i need for certain applications.
It turned out to be a simple fix, so we had a quick look at other things, did a quick TX test on all bands and discovered a few other things which we will address in a later episode when the IC-751 is back to life.
Next Ham radio video wll be most likely the repair of the Icom IC-751A

Nice! I just got one of these from a ham buddy. Got it back to life with a new ram board. Chasing down some display, memory switch, and vco issues but nothing that scares me off too bad. These rigs receive really well and transmit a nice sharp clean signal! 73

I agree, it's a great radio, i must admit that i am a big fan of older ICOM radios, got the 745, 751, 751A, 271E, 211, 245 and my very first one was a 215, bought brand new around 1978.
They need some love every now and then, but never had any major issues ,except that noisy DC-DC converter in my 751A which is a story in itself ... almost forgot the VCO caps, a pain to do, but worth it.
But if i compare the receivers alone, my Drake TR7 outperforms those ICOM HF radios by far.

Well, it's essential to check the battery in these radios every now and then, no issues for me and i got quite a few Icom radios... Happy to dispose your junk ...:-)

How many wires can you fit in to one box, how on earth you make sense of that is beyond me, you certainly know your stuff that's for sure.
    Regards Alan.

Thanks Alan,.... sorry for not doing machining videos at the moment, too cold in the workshop, it's much warmer in the radio cave .... cheers, Mike
