    Great mod Buddy! I bought my 745 new in 1983, knowing it did not have AM transmit and at the time I used to hang out on 3885 and a ten meter AM weekly net. I had a Johnson 500 so it was not a big deal. I thought it was strange not having AM on it but figured maybe it was to frustrate CBers from getting one. But this is a great radio and I loaded it up with all the options and of course purchased the service manual as well and that aided me in troubleshooting a few issues that popped up over the years. Your series on this radio has me missing mine, of which I did have 2.
    I really enjoyed this video and watched it from beginning to end. Great Sunday night educational entertainment. 50 years ago it was the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights, now it is The Radio Shop taking its place. Proof that things do get better and better.

      Thanks for sharing your story. I agree the 75 is an outstanding rig. I could not get by without mine. Wow been many years since I watched Ed, we are getting oil! Thanks for the kind words and glad you liked the video.

    This will be very helpful to owners of this rig. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to so carefully produce this video. The world is a better place because of your efforts.
    Maybe consider using a pointer instead of your finger to make things a little clearer.

    Great to see that IC-745 working on AM. There are some AM nets on 80 meters. Would like to get on there with them but I need more space here for a 80 meter dipole. Will add that to my wish list. Thanks again Buddy

  • @mikesradiorepair

    Great to see you got it working on AM. Probably one of two possible reasons why they didn't enable AM. As someone else said to prevent chicken banders from using it. The other may have been to force people to buy a more expensive model that did TX on AM.

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  6 лет назад

      You just may be right on that Mike. Was not a hard to do mod, just needed my original service manual so I could find the parts better. But we made it through.

    Excellent job, Buddy. I find it rather odd that ICOM never put in that simple circuitry. It just doesn't sound like ICOM. They produce good quality gear. Anyway, another great video from the master! Thanks for sharing it with us. 73 DE K7RMJ Frank

    That was a lot of work Buddy. Well done. I am trying to think of why Icom didn't enable the AM mode. Obviously it was originally designed to do so. Maybe the bean counters got in at the last minute. Hard to believe that they put a function on the front panel that didn't exist and sent the radio to market anyway. Glad to see that you are getting some use out of the old Heathkit power meter. 73 Doug.

    Hello Buddy
    Thank you for this Excellent series of videos with clear and informative explanation of the issues and how to resolve!
    I have a 745 with strange issues:
    -20m is “missing “ from the band stack….it jumps to 4 Mhz instead.
    All other bands are fine.
    - No receive on CW but Tx is OK
    -No receive on AM
    -No Tx on FM but Rx is fine
    -Tx and Rx is fine on SSB except for the missing 20m
    Any suggestion where to start looking at what might be causing these faults?
    Many thanks for any guidance

    did you just overlap the component ends and solder or do you J-hook bend them and crimp tight before? I like j-hooking for added vibration proofing. some people tend to beat/hammer and abuse things :)

    • @TheRadioShop

      I used the j-hook method. Dont want them breaking apart.

    Not a snip, and clip is certainly an understatment! I'm not familiar with the 745. In your opinion is the mod worth it? Does it to your knowledge make a nice sounding AM (once the mod is performed) transciever? Great job Buddy. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  6 лет назад +1

      It is a bit of work to get the AM transmit going. The receiver sounds pretty good even with the filters it has installed. According to Paul the TX AM audio sounds decent. Looks ok on the scope but will be doing another video on the audio and power mod. Thanks for the question, I believe it is well worth the effort.

    I have an ic-735 that was normal until the beginning of the year and recently started to have a problem with the reception. Some days were back to normal. The meter indicates a lot of signal, but I don't hear the stations or I hear very low. I disassembled the radio and found a lot of cold solder. After redoing the welds and assembling the equipment, the reception did not return to normal. Is there a specific component that I can test?

    nice job buddy. i personally think the am was left out to keep the 11meter idiots away from this radio
    i'm interested on how this rig performs b4 you mod any further, i havent seen anything in the comments so far so i shall ask.
    does this modify you doing throw off any tune & alignment?

    • @TheRadioShop
      @TheRadioShop  6 лет назад +1

      I think they were influenced by the FCC at the time of this radio, this really made it harder to be used on cb. Since we are not dealing with tuned circuits and only moving voltages around there is not additional tuning or alignment require. Thanks Scott

    • @TheRadioShop

      There is, Ir is called the "mars mod". But has nothing to do with AM mode transmit in this radio since it is missing the circuit to enable AM transmit. These are two entirely different mods.

    Hi, can you help? The power switch on my IC-745 failed. I unsoldered it - but STUPIDLY forgot to make a note of what wires went where. There's a medium thickness red wire that goes to the fuse, then there's also a medium thickness black wire. There are also 3 thin red wires, and I remember 2 going to one of the switch terminals. Can anyone HELP? Preferably with a picture. Charles M0DED in UK
