WELL MAT, I’ve just gone and bought the 16-80 in XT4 kit.Over the moon with the pairing of these two and a Big thank you for the guidance on th lens.
Amazing John really glad I can help!
I have this lens for about two months now and i'm very happy with every aspect of it. I highly recommend it.
Really glad that you love it, totally understand its a beast!
Great Work Matt- great info- Im still shooting the !8-55-might have to upgrade
Hello, yeah its a tough one, for me the only reason I would keep 18-55mm is due to the low light capabilites at F2.8. This didnt bother me so personally I upgraded due to the weather sealing, larger focal range and more versatile one lens for travel photography. It's a tough one, but I have loved my decision so far :D
Just ordered the xt3 with the 16-80, so excited! Initially the fact that it's f4 really put me off but after watching reviews I was convinced it was worth the extra bit of money for the kit instead of the 18-55. Thanks for all the reviews on the xt3 and lenses, they're so informative and helpful :)
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for this review. Love your videos. I was trying to decide between the 16-80 and 16-55 for my X-T4, and finally bought the 16-80. The only issue I see is it loses focus when zooming in or out during video. The 16-55 doesn't have that issue. I think the 16-55 is a sharper lens too. But I like that the 16-80 is not as heavy as the 16-55, and has a better zoom range. By the way, beautiful location you were shooting from.
Yeah the 16-55 has that more professional feel and use to it. But I still think id go for the 16-80 over again if I had to.
I ve got the XF 18-55, XF 16-55 2.8 and the XF 16-80mm F4. The XF 16-80mm is a great lense for still photography. Its greatest advantage is its versatility namely great focal length in combination of the ability to take pictures in short distances. 35cm is a very short distance. So you can have blurry backgrounds with the lense. Love this effect.
Totally agree with it all - lovely setup mate!
I have the 16-55 and I love it, but I'm still considering to get the 16-80 when it gets more affordable than now (even the used ones keep a high price). It seems perfect when you want and/or need to travel light - good reach, acceptable image quality, OIS, WR.
Totally agree! I own both and if I didnt need the F2.8 for some paid work I wouldnt own it, I would own x2 of the 16-80mm
About to pick up this lens. It’s between the 18-135 or this but leaning toward the 16-80. Hope I get this one right mate!
Ps I really respect how much work you’re putting into your photographic career, it really inspires me to put in more effort to do same.
WOW, this means the world to me, I really appreciate this and to be honest with you the real big pick me up that I needed today! :D
I own the 16-80 for the exact reasons you mentioned although I do not do videos. The range, OIS with auto turnoff on tripod and the 72mm diameter of the lens where the real driving force for me to get this lens. I have 3 lenses with the same diameter so the filters I own will fit all. Cheers.
Yeah that is really nice when all the filters fit all lens, makes life so much easier! :D
Yes I OWN a 16-80mm and love it. Rgds Will Herlaar, Holland
Great image Matt and looks like you have made a good choice with your purchase. Hope you are doing ok and are safe and well
Thanks 👍 So far so good! I am doing well and safe thanks :D How are you going with it all?
@@matthewstorerphotography Same here Matt, safew and well for the time being and hopefully riding it out best way we can. Keeping contact to a bare minimum is best way at the moment
Will shortly be buying the XT4 with this lens as it is such a price margin But can’t wait to get it.
Yep, totally agree John!
Hi Mat, I bought it but focus ring is a bit loose?
Hello Mattheu, thanks for the videos. I am a Fuji user and for travel I usualy take the 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200, but I am considerating to buy the 16-80 to travel with an only one lens. 90% of my fotography travel I shoot with 18-55 that consider a very good lens regarding definition at f/6.4 (most I shhot). My question for you is about it, do you test both lenses regarding definition? Do you have a winner? Greetings from Argentina.
Hello, for me the only reason I would keep the 18-55mm now is due to the low light capabilites at F2.8 at 18mm. If this doesnt bother you I would personally upgrade, the weather sealing, larger focal range and as you said the more versatile one lens for travel photography. Regarding image quality you wouldnt see a great deal of difference, but at 35mm + the 16-80mm wins hands down.
Thanks for the video! I’ve seen your recent reviews of the Panasonic G9. I use the X-H1 and also recently bought the 16-80 but have not had a lot of time to use yet due to current events. May I ask how you would rate the Panasonic Leica 12-60 on the G9 vs the 16-80 on the X-H1? Sensor debate aside, do you feel image quality of the two are similar or one is better? I ask because I’m thinking about switching to a G9 due to its current price and my want for a lighter setup for wildlife shooting in the future. Thanks!
Mhmm great question Jon, I would say they are very similar. I would say low light is very similar being F/4 and F2.8-4 on MFT. But overall image quality is very similar and couldnt split the difference. I would say the High-Res mode in the G9 was a massive drawing point to me once again. I stayed with Fuji just because I have the system already, I found the G9 better to use with the saved functions etc. I would have to say the value for money is amazing in the G9!
@@matthewstorerphotography Thanks for your feedback! I may need to order a G9 to test out then! Keep up the great reviews!
Do you turn off the OIS in the lens and camera when using a tripod?
Hey Steve, you actually do not have to with this lens, it doesnt have a OIS switch because it recognising when on a tripod and just turns off automatically :D
Can you use this for still photography at the 60 and 80 mmOr should I just buy a prime for that
Of course you can, I will be using it a lot espically when I travel :D
I am not interested in this lens to own, only to read about it. Everyone's different, but for me if I want a travel lens I would use my 18-135mm and then add the 16mm f1.4 or 14mm f2.8 for those wide shots. Nice video, by the way!
Thanks for sharing, get where youre coming from! Would be a lovely combination together. I used to own the 18-135 its a great lens but not for my video use - thats the only reason I got rid of it! Bloody good apart from that!
Still can't decide between this 16-80 and the 18-135!!!!! If you could only have one lens in forever and you had to choose between these which one would you get?
I would choose the 16-80mm for me it's a little bit better quality, i really enjoy 16mm vs 18mm and fixed aperture. Plus you need to remember I do video also, therefore, the F/4 constant is better
I only wish it did have an IS switch that I could use when on a tripod. I put a ND filter on my 16-80 and was doing some long exposures. The exposures were somewhat (but noticeably) soft. My X-T3 evidently didn't recognize my tripod and kept the IS on, at least a little bit. I'll have to do the menu thing now when on a tripod, but I wish I didn't have to.
i also have the strange feeling that sometimes on a tripod with nd filters some photos get blury...does the ois awaekes in those 2 minutes?
Very interesting, i never do long exposure so couldnt comment on this. But very interesting thans!
Maybe customize a button for IS in your camera ?
I have to test this too, that’s interesting. I programmed the ael button on my x-h1 to switch the is modes. As I understand it, they work in conjunction, so when I switch of the ibis, it should switch of as well. I don’t mind the physical switch though.
i will be looking at this lens at the photo show to see how sharp it is
I bloody love it, really interested to see what you think?
Hi, I've got a XF 18-55mm lens and I'm a beginner, I am very confused if it is necessary to buy another XF 16-80mm lens, would that gonna bring me a better experience or it is just too much to a beginner?
If you are just a beginner - a better lens will not help that much. getting out and practising will. Learn, fail, learn more and fail more. It will help you quicker

Thank you for your reviews! There are many different opinions on that lens... price is also very high (849 €). You almost get a Sony 24-105 for that price and that lens should be better (on full frame A7III).
Considering this in combination with a X-H1 for landscape but still not 100 % sure :-/
Thanks for watching! I agree 100% but I adore this lens and really happy with it for my needs
@@matthewstorerphotography glad to hear that!
I absolutely love this lens on my x-h1! It’s just a balance of weight and flexibility. Plus it has the same diameter as the 10-24 for filters, so I just ordered another step up ring for a few bucks.
Great that you love it, thinks its an amazing lens also!
Thx for the review. Not many samples of the 16 to 80mm here. The drone footage is nice, but doesn't apply here. Hard to find good samples of this lens. Mostly personal experience relating to it.
Thanks for watching!
I am close to buying my first Fujifilm camera and the biggest question is, my decision revolves mainly around XT3 (which still is a fantastic camera, but has no OIS) or the XT4 (with the IBIS). Take the XT3 with the 16-55 (but no OIS on both) or the 16-80 (with at least the OIS on the lense), or take the XT4 with the 16-55 (which then becomes a rather expensive investment) or the 16-80. When I believe they do all represent a great choice, my main concern is if the 16-80 truly delivers top quality pics, also with low light, on the XT4 and on the XT3. I'd love to save some money to buy a prime lense, by taking the XT3? But is it worth it. How's your experience so far with the 16-80, shooting with the XT3? In lowlight for instance, a tripod is a must I suppose.
Actually to be honest I was shooting with the X-T3 in the desert in Egypt a year or so ago, was suprised, but then I did change to the X-H1 at that time because it's a better choice for low light. My suggestion is "buy right the first time" because you'll only regret it later. Maybe buy a second hand X-T4 or wait and save money if that is what you really are after. Or even what about the X-S10 just released?
@@matthewstorerphotography Thank you for your reply. I was giving the X-S10 a thought, but as it just came out I'd rather wait for the first trustful reviews before considering eventually buying it, but I don't want to wait no more for a Fuji ;))) I am also coming more and more to the thinking that, the evidence which is that the XT3 is for sure a great camera but only when light conditions are accordingly, and it has it's issues as soon as it isn't so. I appreciate your point of view, I believe it's probably more fitting to my needs to go for a complete camera which the XT4 surely would be, I think the actual offer Fuji is proposing which is the XT4 with the 16-80 lense is a top one, price wise just a little more expensive than the XT3+16-55 solution but because of OIS it gives me more options through a day of shooting with all the unexpectancies you may incounter. Your video is very helpful because it comforts the positive opinion over the 16-80 lense. Cheers ;)
I have the 18-55 kit lens and if the 16 - 80mm was f.2.8 instead of f/4 I would definitely get it , thats the only reason why . I would get this lens
Hey yeah I get you. But it would also be much bigger and also much more expensive. So wouldn't really work, still an amazing lens if you ask me :)
@@matthewstorerphotography I love my kit lens, I think even if I add other lens to my line up I will still keep my kit lens
I have a few Fuji lenses now for my X-S10 and I usually take the 12mm F2 Samyang for wide, the 23mm F1.4 Viltron for cinematic+street, 35mm Fuji F2 when I want something tiny/portable and the 56mm Viltron F1.4 for portraits, things further away. Taking 2-3 lenses doesn't feel any heavier than the single 16-80mm F4 which is huge/heavy compared to all those primes. Plus those all have that full frame creamy bokeh look the 16-80mm just does not have - I'm quite disappointed with the 16-80mm and thinking of selling it.
Really? Thats crazy i love the lens! But depends what you require it for mainly
@@matthewstorerphotography I ended up selling the lens, it's just really huge and heavy and gives a very disappointing performance for my uses: terrible for video (zoom breathing, flat look, etc), unusable for talking heads video (no toneh), poor in low light, poor for portrait (no bokeh), not enough zoom for sports. Even for taking a photo of my meal in a restaurant, I can't get much depth of field, just looks flat - I much prefer the fake portrait mode shot from my iPhone!
It ended up being a do everything badly lens for me. I bought the 18-55mm kit lens and much prefer it because of the F2.8 wide open and minuscule size/weight by comparison.
Many people have no clue how beautiful some former east block countries are. Bulgaria, Tschech Republic, Russia, Polen beautiful countries with gorgeous women and landscapes 😜
100% agree. Beautiful counteries that are not explored enough
I have the 18-55 on my x-t2, but got the 16-80 because of the extra reach, mainly at the wide end. I considered the 16-55, but minuses are weight, no is, (and cost). I'm really enjoying it as my do-it-all lens. (of course with an x-t4, the no-is issue would go away .. :-) )
Yep totaly agree with this and love the thought process!
me too..from 18-55 to 16-80 sold it for 220 €
Have you now replaced the 18-135 with this lens?
Yes I have, ths is my main video lens and sorta of go to walk around lens
@@matthewstorerphotography what is better ?? 16-80, 18-55 or 18-135 to ladnscape
I can't download the images. "404...find what you're looking for." appeared.
It should be back up and running now :D
"That scared the Jesus out of me" LOL
Hahahaha Whooops!
*Bejesus
👍
Thanks
So the videos are from a drone.
Not all of them
Iave seen plenty of reviews of this lens. i have it and love it. its not a red bagde but some people call it almost perfect, acording to this guy its in 3rd place righ after the 16 f1.4, the 80mm macro and in 4th place the 8-16 that i also own and in fifth the 50-140.
the only downsides of the 16-80 is at 16 and 80 and at f4 i think :)
ruclips.net/video/i5VqLTXSa_o/видео.html
Yeah I sort of agree, but the softness at the extreme of the images I can handle for the versatile lens :D
I agree that 16-80 is a great lens but I would take anything "Theoria Apophasis" aka. "The Angry Photographer" Ken Wheeler says with a big grain of salt.
In his original review of the 16-80, where not much reviews were available (especially not any exhaustive review), he said it is sharper in the whole range than 16-55, which is just not true which would he see if he actually tested both lenses and was shown by many reviews that were following. He also didn't catch the shutter shock issue that pestered first versions of the lens, which just opens the question what he was even testing. Of course in the review all he shows is a bunch of photos he took an says how awesome they are... on his monitor next to him - where even a sub 100€ lenses fully open would look sharp.
@@quikee9195 I would say a big bag of salt ;)
Ken Wheeler knows a lot about Fuji, he is a great reference but you should not blindly believe everything he says. He has contradicted himself several times every now and then.
The WORST thing about this lens is the fact that it has no switches lol
If you like automatic crap like that, get a Sony
hahahaha never looked at it this way
