Hey, Warren! I don't know what type of mic is in your accoustic guitar, but if it's a piezo pickup (sounds like it), you should switch the input impedance to the 2MOhm position. That might give you loads of bottom end to work with! The input impedance should always be at minimum the same, preferably ten times higher than the source impedance. An imput impedance lower than the source impedance will give you a high- and sometimes low-pass filter in the audible range. A piezo usually has an impedance of 1MOhm, so the 2MOhm position should be a better fit! (A "normal" 1MOhm DI is also more often than not a bad fit for piezo's. Radial makes DI's specificaly for Piezo's)

Funny thing: I have a Radial Bassbone OD, which I bought for my piezo-powered EUB. It works beautifully for that. Not so long ago, I decided to try recording guitars direct from its line-out, as well as processed by a modelling amp via its amp-out, as is commonly done with bass guitar. The DI signal sounded fantastic for all of them! It might just be Radial magic at work.

I always use a DI from an electric/acoustic. I did a session back in my ADAT days and the client bumped a mic and refused to reperform the part because it was a live performance and was so happy with his performance, he didn't think he could do it again. The DI'ed acoustic guitar ended up saving the day and he was "pleased as punch" and I was (quite literally) a hero in his eyes because I had the backup source. I did bring the mic track up just enough to hide the bump but it was about 80% DI.

What a wonderful DI! Thanks for the demo. The Radial Tonebone is my go-to di for acoustic guitars, this will probably do the same for bass, and maybe electric guitars as well. I have used the Avalon U5 a lot, and love it, but this Radial has so much more to offer. Any opinion of those compared?

Hi Warren, love your channel! The bass and guitar sounded great, but obviously what you were hearing and what is heard on this video as pertaining to the acoustic is completely different since you were hearing both the live in the room sound as well as the direct feed while we only hear the direct feed. The direct feed by itself doesn't sound good but blended with a mic'd signal it could sound great, but we can't tell because we weren't in the room with you! You are such an amazing guitarist I think you could make any DI sound great! I would love to hear a song with you playing a ripping lead!! Cheers

Grabbed one of these a month or two ago, and I've gotta say it's absolutely incredible. The tone shaping/compression is awesome, but I also love how many tracks you can get from the one source. I've been having a lot of luck sending the mic/line outputs to the mixer (scoop some mids and do the pultec trick to the mic level channel, leave Line level as is), and sending the Raw/Effected 1/4" outputs directly to my interface. End up with 4 incredibly usable tracks to pick and choose from or combine.

So glad I clicked on this video.
Can't compare that live signal to a digitally-driven signal. I love the sound of my bass driven with what engineering techniques I'm aware of but that sounds is just not possible to achieve without running the signal through a physical system. There's so much more detail in an analog signal because the saturation is added into the signal coming from the strings rather than just increasing the amplitude.
I really like that mid tone around the 16m mark.
I actually really like the acoustic run through that. It makes the strings sound really metallic - I think it'd fit well in overlay environments in the studio when the bass tones are usually cut out anyways. I think it'd also be really great for running the acoustic's signal into some really deep effects because of the high-frequency values (flanger, etc.) It'd also add a great high-frequency overlay if you played the same riff as the bassline and mixed it in with the bass. Try passing it through a low-cut filter. It sounds like a pulse-width oscillator. Ooh, try it with a wah!

  • @FakingANerve

I can't WAIT to try one of these out (hopefully) but we shouldn't think it's too amayyyzing to see a line output on any modern DI, let alone an $800 Radial bass masterpiece... right? 😊

  • @victorblakey4260
    @victorblakey4260 2 года назад

I loved the short ‘nod’ to Al DiMeola.
The bass sounded pretty good, the electric sounded mighty.
The acoustic guitar however, I will say that you were almost certainly hearing a lot of acoustic live, and not hearing the DI output to the same extent that you were from the electric instruments. To my ear, the acoustic sounded overly ‘brittle’, and over compressed, to the extent that a notable amount of ‘pumping’ was present in the track.
As you said, possibly use it as an extra fattening or FX track next to 1 or 2 nice microphone tracks.
Overall though, it sounds like a pretty nice toy, and one I would love to get my hands on.

At the moment I'm recording my bass with the built in D/I on my Ampeg B1 and just tweek alittle on the console and use some stock plugin to satisfy the customer. I have tried mic as well but to be honest, the DI sounds better and is easier to manipulate to create a awesome sound. This RADIAL HDI would of course help me make an even better bass sound.

  • @UltimateByte
    @UltimateByte 4 года назад +4

A test of the HI Z switch would have been useful!
As per the manual, HI Z should probably be turned ON for recording instruments that are usually 20 to 100K Ohms outputs and expect 1M Ohms or more amp inputs. Remember that DIs are impedance adaptation tools first!
With a 200K Ohms input (which is already high and way better than a line input), input/output impedance ratio is likely a bit too low for passive instruments, and, you might then lose signal amplitude and especially high frequencies due to the cable acting as a condenser when current passes through. On the other hand, if input impedance is too high, it might lead to more self noise in some cases.
On a side note, it's funny to see Radial doing non transparent products, because what I know them for the most is their incredibly efficient and neutral Jensen coils (notably used in at least some editions of the JDI which is affordable). That said, these tools seem quite nice to have if you can. Also, I wouldn't go that hard on the compression as it acts close to a limiter but with slow release, it pumps a lot when you smash signal into it.
Ultimately, I'm using this occasion to thank you for all your work and useful insights including this video. I've learned a lot from you, and I'd be thrilled if I brought at least one useful piece of information in return!
    All the best.

The acoustic sustain might be fantastic (and it seems to be as much), but it certainly doesn't sound as much like an acoustic. 😬
If that isn't piezo-quack I'm hearing exacerbated, I would be quite surprised! I'm wondering if there's a setting on the rig that would drop down that piezo 2-3kHz quack out before bringing up that compression.

Sounds absolutely fantastic on bass! Even on elec guitar.
Wasn't that found of the acoustic guitar though, maybe because I don't like DI'ed acoustics. 😊 As always great review Warren! 👍

Hi Bengt! Agreed, yes, DI Acoustics are always quite 'interesting' to say the least!

I just recently picked up a axe i/o for this very reason. I wonder how this would compare in a recording scenario?

Nice but sounds thin for a bass n playing the bass like a guitar makes it more noticeable for that price I would get a Neve pre amp 1073 or 1272...guitars seem but again for the price best to go for a tube ...personal preference n taste otherwise professional awesome Presentation n awesome piece of DI to combine w others

How would you compare this to the Avalon U5 Direct Box? I used the Avalon U5 Direct Box for years when running FOH at a church. We used a pair of them on a piano. I've used the Avalon U5 Direct Box quite a bit on bass guitar in studio settings.

I have an Avalon U5 and it's a great DI similar to this. Great on bass and acoustic guitar.

You should have read the manual first! The Color and presence is flat fully counter clockwise! The opto comp is 3 positions, and the HPF is also a three positions.... The switch is OFF down position! any way, that thing sound awesome ! I'll test it soon! ;)

Do you like it better than the Acme Audio Motown D.I.?

I have the radial xamp which is great for running things back out of my daw into an amp or even to just get it to the proper level to run virtual instruments through guitar pedals and then come back in through a hiz input on my uad apollo x8. Great stuff, I would run this in parallel with using unison ampeg in my uad and then in the method warren taught me, use the di for low end and amp for the character (although this seems to give you some of that as well)

What is your preferred method for getting stereo -10 dB unbalanced line level keyboards and synths to your balanced converter ins?

I'm assuming you plug this in after the pedalboard and then into Logic? Or would it work better into an amp?

Sounds very coloured - even before you applied it! Would have liked to hear it with no drive "ultra Clean" as they say. Radial are know for transparency. I like this but Im not sure is it is DI or a Pre. Extensive testing would answer that one! better enter the give away..!

I would love to see the Radial compared to the Line 6 bass Driver. I've been using the bass Driver for 20+ years and it would be a useful comparison.

Very nice Warren! I'm gonna have to pick up one of these if I don't win one. 😜
Humbuckers have a higher resistance and inductance, so they are usually quite well matched fir a D.I. Plug in a Strat or a Tele: so damn clean you couldn't clip a hedge with one; then let's see how it goes.
    Nice Beatles riffs!
Ooooo, The Velvet Underground. One day I'll tell you my Lou Reed stories. 😈
