    ➡️ Yamaha LL16: imp.i114863.ne...
    ➡️ Shure SM57: imp.i114863.ne...
    1. BAE Audio 1028
This is my workhorse. I have a lot of BAE stuff, but if I am recording individual elements, like lead vocals or acoustic guitars, this is the one that gets use on pretty much everything. For me, having one really good, really high quality mic preamp with EQs is essential.
    2. Pultec EQP-500A
This is a secret weapon for me. This is a huge part of my bass sound when I am mixing in a hybrid fashion on the console. I use a 100Hz boost and a 3k Hz boost, and then it is inserted on my bass channel on the console. While we could boost the low end on the console, there is something absolutely fantastic about how the low end blooms on the 500A.
    3. DBX 120A
What I love to do when mixing rock and roll and live drums if to have the low end come in underneath the bass guitar. This allows me to do that and really helps out my mix because I can have those low lows I want coming right in underneath. If you are mixing hybrid, I highly recommend getting one of these, if you are not, there are a number of companies that make fantastic plugin versions of this as well.
    4. Yamaha RevStar
This is one of my favorite guitars. This guitar is so well made, well set up, and so versatile. I use it on nearly every single recording we do. And, it is affordable as well! I love equipment that is amazing, and also affordable, and this guitar is one of those wonderful pieces!
    5. Nobels ODR-1 Natural Overdrive
This is my favorite overdrive pedal. It is great for leads, and it really responsive just like a tube amp. I usually find that I don’t need too much drive, but it still makes it mid-rangey and honky and cuts through. It is truly an amazing pedal and I use it all the time.
    6. Carl Martin Echotone
This is my favorite delay pedal. I find that I use a lot of echo, really lightly, all the time, and this is the pedal I use to do it. I have had this pedal for almost 11 years, I have taken it everywhere, used it all the time, and have never had it break down or had any issues with it.
    7. Yamaha LL16
I love many acoustic guitars, but there is something wonderful about the LL16. It is beautifull built, it can be pop when I want it to be pop, it can be rock when I want it to be rock, and so much more. And since I changed to Ernie Ball strings, it has really come to life even more. This guitar is definitely one I cannot go without, and it has been on almost every recording I have done since I got it!
    BONUS: Shure SM57
If someone comes to me and asks about inexpensive mics and how to get started, the SM57 is the one I recommend. I remember talking to almost every major producer and engineer that I have worked with, and they all come back to this as well. There are plenty of inexpensive mics out there, but out ears are so tuned to this mic and the way it sounds, that this is the one we all turn to. It is the sound of guitars, snare drums, pretty much anything you want to use it for, as well as the sound of Paul Rogers’s voice, and he is one of the greatest rock singers of all time. This is a mic that is super affordable, sounds great, and that is why it is one we use all the time.

You talking about the API bass shaping made me happy. I’m a professional bassist before anything and for years I’ve told bassists who asked about my tone “I don’t boost the real lows at all, I boost slightly the low/low mids intersection at around 100hz”. Bassist think low mids are the mud point but they aren’t! That’s exactly where the bumpin roundness thing happens. I also run with my tone wide open (unless asked otherwise) so the engineer gets to decide how much high freqs they need in the mix. Helps me play more carefully too 🤷‍♂️

    • @brianvillage5

Have to agree with most of these but especially the SM57 and using a hardware or waves “rbass” plug in for the sub/bass. I use it for a single drum mic ala dapkings ( mic placed 1 inch next to kick and about 2 inches from batter side of kick facing the snare and it captures the fizz of snare and the r bass brings out a fat kick sound using only one sm 57! It just works!

A Pro recognizing the value of Yamaha guitars. Nice to hear in a "guitar-world" dominated by an unquestionable Fen-Gib-Mar-Tay deaf fundamentalism (people out there: do no forget you have ears and eyes to judge by yourself the value of gear). I have a revstar 620 and a Yamaha LJ26. The "620" is a good piece of gear but the acoustic "26" is such an outstandingly crafted guitar that every acoustic player should try out alongside the Mar-Tay dyad.

Following your tip on the EQP500A I used a Waves PuigTec EQP1A to try the boost you demonstrate on a bass in a Death Metal mix and was flippin blown away (boosted both the 100 and 3k to ten). Used it right after Sansamp Bass Driver and the Amplitube cab sim to simulate kind of a recording situation. Lots of processing follows the EQ (like dynamic EQing and lots of compression), but the difference is still huge! So, yeah, thanks for another major (MAJOR) game changer in my best practices!

As a poor beginning musician, all i could afford is only one mic. Because i wanted to make indie rock music and mic my amp i went and get a SM57. If i can't get any other mic for a while i'm quite confident with only this one because it works great with guitars and also vocals, and it forces me to learn to EQ properly so i can use it on a lot of things. It has fallen so many time, it's so sturdy. I recommend it for every other budget minded recording artist like me.

Great video Warren! and you demonstrated just how versatile that Revstar guitar is! Also you can’t go past EB strings on anything for tone feel & longevity... & no... I don’t have an endorsement 😁. And what a company Yamaha is... everything from their musical instruments, to studio , to hifi gear, all remarkable quality & usually affordable... they’ve constantly delivered for decades!

Fantastic video Warren, and straight to the point. Thank you so much for the stellar advice. BTW I've been looking for a DBX 120 for awhile now, looks like they're going to jump up a bunch on Reverb and Ebay now. Ha ha.

I find overdriven guitars sound best when you go a bit OTT on the pedal side, but then back off a little on the guitar volume. You get a lovely choppy rhythm sound.

I have been using the ODR-1 and ODR-S ever since being introduced to them by Nashville session ace Pat Buchanan. Mine were about $55 new then!

Can you please do a video on different types of analog compressors and EQs. I believe that you own many analog gears. It would be helpful when people like me use the software emulations of the analog stuff.

Years ago I owned a Pro Audio version of the dbx 120, to add low end to my home stereo. I wish that I had kept it, but I moved around too much back then. The Plugin Alliance version is called, bx_subsynth and is also available as bx_subsynth Subharmonic Synth, in the UAD-2 ecosystem! Have you started using your Universal Audio system yet?

no talk of basses :( lol. At the moment my setup is basic for bass recording, P bass with flats into an apogee duet, into logic using one of their preset bass amps. its fine and gets the job done, when I'm back at my main place I can start using some of my other basses and amp.

Question about the Nobel ODR-1. Is yours the model with the bass cut switch? I am considering buying one of the full size versions. Thanks as always Warren.

Yamaha is probably the best brand to choose if you want to get bang for the buck, their mid-range guitars sound awesome 😎 I have an electro acoustic and using the proper strings the overall tone is great it doesn’t lack of low end good mids smooth top end...

I will have to have look at a Yamaha LL16. Would be an interesting comparison - I have a vintage ('69 -'72) Yamaha FG-500 which I have made quite a few recordings with. It was one of the best purchases ever at $75 with the hard case. Every guitar player who has played it has made a positive comment on it's tone (and told me to let them know if I ever want to sell it). I think they go for almost as much as the LL16 these days. If you come across one at a good price, worth looking into.

That sub bass synth thing at 7:55 got me thinking.....run a kick track out into my Moog Grandmother's audio in, through the low pass filter with a bit of resonance and the cutoff around 50hz ish....mix that back in parallel to the kick.....???

If you have an SM57, of course use it, but I picked up a Blue 100i and I really prefer it on guitar cabs because it captures the low end better (although I still pair it with a Royer) and is slightly less fizzy. Also, while I love your videos, please stop using the SM7 for voice. It works great for a lot of people but for some reason your voice sounds muddy and inarticulate when you use it, especially since you modulate your voice a good deal (which is a good thing overall, but when your voice gets softer, the articulation is really lost), and that lavalier mic that you use sounds so much better. I suppose you could eq that mic to bring out the top end articulation, but why when you could use another good mic I'm sure you have (or just stick with the lavalier since it is remarkably clear).

...and if anyone is still reading: for acoustic guitar, while I think that Yamaha is great for a kind of generic acoustic guitar (which is probably exactly what you want for a lot of pop songs), if you want a cheap acoustic guitar with character (rock, folk), check out the mid-70s Takamines (the Martin knock offs), they still often sell cheap and sound really nice especially after a good setup.
