when the major is scanning Goku, he can see that the boy is not human. mind you this was before the reveal that Goku is a alien as Akira Toriyama didn't originally planed this until later. but this was a hint that Goku is not from Earth long before he met Raditz, his brother.
The red ribbon army saga is one of the best story arcs in all of anime. Kinda reminds me of the old James Bond movies, or even inspector gadget in some ways.
