I definitely agree. I bought the Canon Elan IIe for $80 last summer. And after almost spending a year with it. It's the best decision I make. I recently bought the 40 2.8mm. Man, that lens is sharp!
A few factors I think about... Does it produce Image size/quality that satisfies yourself or client? Does it make you want to shoot? Are you like to carry it with you? So many different factors and different scenarios. Lately, a canon AF7 Point n shoot with Gold200 let's me shoot and still focus on hangin with my kids! I think lifestyle/how much time and attention your gear takes away is also an overlooked factor. Great video man!👏
Couldn’t agree more. At some point in your career, experience is more important. I know a coworker who just bought an A1(Sony) but her photos are meh. Used it for few minutes to take her photos and she was stunned how better mine were. Anyhow, awesome content as always. Blessings!
Man just came upon this channel a week ago! Too dope man! I've been struggling trying to figure what my next film camera should be. I've been going back and forth between the Mamiya Rb67 or the Fuji GW690ii but this just shows me I need to be grateful for my little Minolta SRT-201 lol! Keep the content going man!
I think that yes gear does not matter at all, but the control you have over it. I have one of those late 90s canon cameras and it doesn't let me control the aperture which is such a bummer and can really make or break a shot sometimes just because of that one detail
@@ignaciotovar6078 That is a Europe-only model I was not familiar with. The Wikipedia page says it has shutter priority AE, so you should be able to set a high shutter speed. Set it so that the display flashes, indicating that it cannot give you the proper aperture, then turn back one increment (1/3 or 1/2 stop) so that it stops blinking and that should give you wide open on your lens. I am guessing that the display will do this. Then you know that for each stop slower you will have one stop smaller aperture. I hope that works for you until you get something with more control.
@@mikejankowski6321 excellent tip! I tend to use it as a more point and shoot-ish camera ever since y got my hands on a Canon AE1 program, and yes I usually set a high shutter speed in order to get the best aperture for light!
Hi Marcus, Great video. I have a Rebel G that I got for free when I purchased an EF 40mm for $100. The Rebel G has a good autofocus and a great matrix meter. It will take any EF lenses. The nifty 50 is a nice sharp lens. Now, get yourself a bunch of EF "L" glass and see what that Rebel G can do.
If you’re shooting trees and buildings, no your gear doesn’t matter. And you can easily remove shadow color casts in the Lightroom “color grading” tool, FYI.
The great thing about that camera is that you can get other EF mount lenses of basically every focal length imaginable if 50mm isn’t so much your thing. The 40mm f2.8 is a pancake, the 28mm f1.8 is excellent, the 85mm f1.8 is gorgeous. Any one of them can be had used for $250 or less.
It's all about getting out there but I like what you said. If a camera inspires you to get off your butt, then there's the value. I just picked up a Hasselblad 500c for that very reason. It's so pretty it makes me want to use it. :)
Great video once again dude! Loved that shot at 7:33! You brought up a great point about gear. I often find myself looking at new cameras all the time and I usually stop myself and ask “why not just take this money and use it for more film and chemicals and actually make the photos instead of just buying a new tool to make photos?” haha
shoot in greenpoint all the time, love to see how you captured it! that last one especially at 7:33 smacksss. time for me to dust off my trusty ol $50 praktica perhaps lol
Dera Marcus, as always thanks for sharing. As soon as your video started I thought: “guilty as charged!” I’m sitting on many many 35mm cameras that are simply collecting dust and yet I find myself browsing the web for the next gear to buy. Thanks for waking me up from my GAS dream. I’m currently dusting off my very old but incredibly well working EOS 1n. Let’s see how long your video effect will last :-) Regarding next videos, with my GW690 I’m struggling in leveraging movement in my photos. I’d like to add to my photos some more dynamic effects and with the Texas Leica looks like zone focusing is the only way to go. I’d like, if not a video, at least your opinion. Thanks.
That’s awesome that you’re taking canon out to shoot. I used to have that camera too. Zone focusing with the Texas Leica is a bit challenging for me but I’ve done it a few times
I see total yellow tone on photos made with GOLD 200. Porta 400 makes colours more natural, but Porta also has little tone in comparison with the picture of the video.
100p man tbh I've taken a long break from shooting as I just wasnt feeling inspired + life gets in the way. I picked up a 35mm P&S just to make it more accessible and get out to shoot! I think we are all guilty of chasing the next gear thing, same as megapixel chasing in the digital world - but i think a good artists can make any camera work...
nice vid my man. quick question... what mic are you using plugged into your phone? and does it sync w/ your video, or do you have to do that in post? 🙏
Haha, It made my day when you pulled out the Rebel G 🤣. I am sitting at home scanning in portra 400 shot on my Canon Rebel G with the 50mm right as this video came out. I’m sure the Lab scans are way better than my flatbed.
@@MarcusLloyd Thank you for your reply! I feel like it's difficult to meter with a built-in light meter as you are only able to meter the whole scene and not a spot for example. Is this a problem for you? Do you just meter the whole scene? You also said that you normally meter with 200iso for portra 400 - do you push in lab afterwards? Gear doesn't matter, but I think you have to nail your metering - that's what makes your pictures so great! Thanks in advance for your reply! Stay well
This camera has a center weighted meter and I just trusted what the camera was saying. Usually I will meter for shadows and go from there. I don’t tell the lab anything from there.
From my experience, gear doesn't matter, but you need gear you enjoy using. I had cameras from 10$ to nearly 3000$ and what matters most is the feel. Get yourself what you really want. Get rid of the bug in your head so you can enjoy photography to the fullest.
Rebel “G” must mean “great value” LoL . Killer combo with a fast Canon L lens. My favorite cheap AF slr is my Nikon N75 with a 35/2 D lens. Otherwise, my Yashica FX3 Super 2K +50/1.7 Planar is my favorite cheap slr in general. Keep it up with the great videos! 👍
Great video Marcus. When you said we get caught up in this gear acquiring life........ to the point where it cripples us from actually going out to make photos, I thought You've described my paralysis beautifully! Take at look at Nick Carver's latest video, `Ocotillo prints follow up.' It agrees with what you're saying. I take heart from it.
Video is great but your lab is messing up with the colors. Portra 400 should not look like that. Maybe they have to recalibrate the colors on their machines. Keep up the good videos!
style is style no matter what you're shooting with. it's the eye that matters most
Skinny coming through with the wisdom

Yea I agree with that! There’s still certain boxes that you want a camera to check off for you to create how you want
I am not aware of any Canon SLR of that time that did not allow setting of aperture. What model do you have?
