"A thoroughbred rocking horse would scorn the comparison!" What a hilarious line, I love examples like this of old timey people getting super snarky with each other.
I'm glad to know Cradle Rock NEVER rocked. That would be an insult to this sturdy boulder's immovable nature. I cannot believe anyone would ever suggest such a thing about this STURDY rock. Thank you for clearing this up
That's the most interesting video I've seen about a rock that might or might not have rocked at some unspecified time in the past but most likely didn't rock ever.
ok i spent the last 25 minutes composing the lyrics to my piece, following my last comment and Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl": "I rocked the stone" This was never the way I planned Not my intention I got so brave, drink in hand Lost my discretion It’s not what I’m used to Just wanna try to push I’m curious for you Caught my attention (Chorus) I rocked the stone and I liked it Cradle Rock, Massachusetts I rocked the stone just to try it I hope the papers don’t mind it It felt so wrong It felt so right Won’t rock you again tonight I rocked the stone and I liked it I liked it No I shouldn’t know your name It shouldn’t matter You’re my experimental game Just human nature That’s not what Good rocks do Not how they should behave My head gets So confused Hard to convey (Chorus) I rocked the stone and I liked it Cradle Rock, Massachusetts I rocked the stone just to try it I hope the papers don’t mind it It felt so wrong It felt so right Won’t rock you again tonight I rocked the stone and I liked it I liked it Those rocks they are so magical Stacked high, small perch, so rockable Hard to resist so touchable Too good to deny it Ain’t no big deal, it’s innocent (Chorus) I rocked the stone and I liked it Cradle Rock, Massachusetts I rocked the stone just to try it I hope the papers don’t mind it It felt so wrong It felt so right Won’t rock you again tonight I rocked the stone and I liked it I liked it note: my last comment reads: @9:44, to the tune of "i kissed a girl and i liked it": i rocked the stone and i liked it, i liked it
I am no expert on rocking stones, currently not even informed about any true ones. But I just have to assume, the bizarre formation of these glacier-stacked rocks is just too intriguing to people, that they so passionately defend their position. The likelihood of two rocks remaining stacked through obstacles like earthquake, flood and storms and time in general seems to demand a pretty perfect match. Imagine how many rocking rocks used to exist before tipping, never to be seen or debated about. Not being the inspiration for stories about their mysterious origin, not admired or phantasized about. Maybe it is the nature of human perception that makes it seem so close to be able to be rocked, ignoring the sheer weight of such a volume of granite, not taking into account that even with a small contact surface, gravity just pulls them together.
I recall reading an old article by a woman who claimed she remembered both when, as a young girl, the 'Drum Rock" in Warwick, Rhode Island was able to be rocked, and also when it later stopped being able to be rocked (still its current condition). Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you at this moment the exact source for this.
You should check out the long forgotten, and still widely unknown “teeter rock” in Petersham near Carter Pond. There may be other entrances to access the unmarked trail but as far as I know the only road access is an old driveway/homesite located at (42.4433979, -72.1871200). Teeter rock is to my best guess somewhere around (42.4419290, -72.1836020) within the raccoon hill wildlife management area with one main path that loops around to teeter rock. Its one of those areas that is best to get lost in since its not too big, and a lot of cool stuff is located about 10-100ft off trail.
It struck me from the first picture you showed of it that the rock was probably so named because it is shaped like a cradle, not because it rocked. Just a case of someone stretching the metaphor too far. Silly humans!
I nominate Sneaker Rock, located off of the paved path up to the Governor Dick Tower in the mountains near Mt. Greta Pa.,as a successor to Gradle Rock.
Damn, Son, I went in for a little light entertainment about rocking stones, but there was a bonus clip where you pummelled me with bolo punches and then shot me with an elephant gun!
Well at least we know it rocked at least once. The motion of the glacial icefield! What i wouldnt give to be able to witness that, have a slow enough existence to watch glaciers move boulders.
If Cradle Rock did Rock i am sure it would have been blown down in 1953 and F-5 Tornado went through that area starting in Worcester as some call it Warcester the Tornado travelled east for about 50 miles destroying homes and building and killing around 90 people also if you notice the trees in that area that's not and old Growth Forest but a Secondary Forest that tells me the Worcester Tornado blew through that area Worcester and Barre MA are located in central Ma thats where New England Tornado alley begins
just based on how common things are wouldn’t a rocking singer be more special than a stable stone? it’s nice that ppl want to be accurate but i don’t think anyone would have called it a rocking stone to insult it. if anything they were making it more interest than it was
theres 2 rocks just like these in attleboro. they are WAAAY bigger though and you can even crawl between them if your skinny enough. i guarantee waaay less people can squeeze through there now than could in the 80s
Hitchcock was one of the most notable professors of the 19th c. at my college, but I wonder if that illustration was done by his wife, Orra White Hitchcock. She used to turn his doodles and diagrams into more “professional” art and large format posters for his teaching. Although “professional” is kind of misleading- her work has a kind of untrained charm to it. Look up the drawing she made of a kraken attacking a ship!
Now jokers will be hiking out there with bottle jacks to test that theory. In the 90's a buddy and I whom I had worked with in the Gulf doing private military work went out to a remote spot in the desert to do some camping, shooting, hiking and hunting. We went on a hike up a canyon with our AR-15s looking for rabbits. He stayed down in the canyon and I hiked the ridgeline above. I stepped out on a rock that was as big as the top rock there. That thing had been there for millions of years undisturbed and looked to be anchored way better than those in your video. That rock rocked! I had to jump off of it and being a former Marine and current private military worker my first instinct was to protect my rifle so I landed on a bunch of sharp rocks hugging my AR-15 rather than tossing it and trying to break my fall. I gouged my shin open and bruised my back bad enough that I still have back problems today from that. The avalanche I caused almost killed my buddy below and he had run for his life to get out of the way of that boulder and all the others that were dislodged. If I were to climb up on that rock or crawl under it with my luck that thing would decide to pick that moment to rock.

I need "CRADLE ROCK DOES NOT ROCK" on a poster in my room!
I want one that says CRADLE ROCK ROCKS! but in mine the rock has a guitar.
I'm glad to know Cradle Rock NEVER rocked. That would be an insult to this sturdy boulder's immovable nature. I cannot believe anyone would ever suggest such a thing about this STURDY rock. Thank you for clearing this up

At least it’s easily top ten in that category of videos.
Cradle Rock might not rock, but YOU certainly do! Great video. I love your commentary and the historical research you did.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
You always kill it man! Keep up the good work for real. I never thought I'd see the day I was so invested in whether a rock rocks or not.
Hey, thank you! Glad you liked it
ok i spent the last 25 minutes composing the lyrics to my piece, following my last comment and Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl":
"I rocked the stone"
This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost my discretion
It’s not what
I’m used to
Just wanna try to push
I’m curious for you
Caught my attention
(Chorus)
I rocked the stone and I liked it
Cradle Rock, Massachusetts
I rocked the stone just to try it
I hope the papers don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Won’t rock you again tonight
I rocked the stone and I liked it
I liked it
No I shouldn’t know your name
It shouldn’t matter
You’re my experimental game
Just human nature
That’s not what
Good rocks do
Not how they should behave
My head gets
So confused
Hard to convey
(Chorus)
I rocked the stone and I liked it
Cradle Rock, Massachusetts
I rocked the stone just to try it
I hope the papers don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Won’t rock you again tonight
I rocked the stone and I liked it
I liked it
Those rocks they are so magical
Stacked high, small perch, so rockable
Hard to resist so touchable
Too good to deny it
Ain’t no big deal, it’s innocent
(Chorus)
I rocked the stone and I liked it
Cradle Rock, Massachusetts
I rocked the stone just to try it
I hope the papers don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Won’t rock you again tonight
I rocked the stone and I liked it
I liked it

Your channel rules, I'm really enjoying these little snippets of history
Thanks! Glad you like it!
I love this channel man, honestly.
I was waiting for the plot twist at the end, of it actually rocking! Dang! 😅
"Be a lot cooler if it did." - David Wooderson
Without seeing a few people jumping in unison on the outer edge, I am not convinced it never rocked.
Look into Frog Rock in New Boston, NH sometime!
I got a postcard for that one too!
@@DimeStoreAdventures , awesome, really looking forward to hearing history on that rock in the future!
I'm really enjoying your vids
What a strong finish!
On Wachusett mountain in Massachusetts there is a very similar rock formation on the mid state trail called balance rock. I love seeing these things!

Hi Dime, ever researched The Judges Cave on West Rock in New Haven? As a schoolkid in the 70's, we took yearly day trips up there. Interesting story.
I love your content. Keep up the great work
menacing angle under that rock with the selfie stick
Loving your channel. Keep it up!
"Cradle rock" does not move; BUT, if you look at it from just the right angle, it DOES look like an old fashioned cradle!
great content as always
Very glad I found your channel ❤
awesome channel
Keep 'em coming! Great content per usual.

sounds very cool, appreciate the tip!

This rocks
This reminds me of Drum Rock in East Greenwich, RI.
I always heard there were tunnels going from the bay, under Main Street, to the properties across the street. Supposedly linked to the triangle trade
It struck me from the first picture you showed of it that the rock was probably so named because it is shaped like a cradle, not because it rocked. Just a case of someone stretching the metaphor too far. Silly humans!
the stone might not rock, but your video certainly does
Dude, the stone rocks. 😃
Barre is a very nice little town.
Check out balancing rock in Holliston, MA.
7:44 had me laughing
Cradle Rock has and still does rock.
It looks like tipping rocks on your map are nearly all close to equidistant from each other
Love it
That settles that!
"stones that rock never stay on top forever!"
And the cradle will rock... and I say rock on
I nominate Sneaker Rock, located off of the paved path up to the Governor Dick Tower in the mountains near Mt. Greta Pa.,as a successor to Gradle Rock.
Do you memorize those monologues??? Dang dude!!!
ROCK AND STONE! 🪨🪨🪨
Damn, Son, I went in for a little light entertainment about rocking stones, but there was a bonus clip where you pummelled me with bolo punches and then shot me with an elephant gun!
Just imagine the force it took to place that rock there💁♂️
Well at least we know it rocked at least once.

It's funny that it's even called cradle rock because of folklore
just based on how common things are wouldn’t a rocking singer be more special than a stable stone? it’s nice that ppl want to be accurate but i don’t think anyone would have called it a rocking stone to insult it. if anything they were making it more interest than it was

cradle rock doesnt rock, and thats why it rocks
I wanta rock 🪨 🎸 Rock 🪨 🎸 😉 wanta rock 🪨 🎸 🎶 😎
Who else has Billy Idol playing in their head right now?😅
Someday it will though, just you wait. Someday...
Now I want to pull cradle rock down its slope. Because I can't hear an insult to rocking stones. Cradle Rock MUST NOT STAND!
It looks like a hooded cradle.
in fact it rocks so hard, they should change its name to "cleveland" rock.
And the cradle … won’t rock … 🎶 🎼
Now rest of my life I will be insulted if someone dares suggest Cradle Rock can rock. This is personal.
Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.
BARRY? It’s Barre like Bar, no?

Fucking with the aspect ratio, please don't change your filming setup I love the camcorder A/V quality
Its called cradle rock but it just looks more like a giant rock toilet
Rock doesn't rock. So what you're saying is....
it's METAL.
whattya mean "no"?!?!?!!? EVERYONE who knows whats what, knows cradle rock frigging rocks!!!!!!!
I wouldn't get under it for any amount of money. An earthquake might shift it.
Lightning might strike you, so better not go out under the sky either mate :v
If you look in some of your photos there are faces .I'm just a guy.but I'm just saying.
i agree… i dont think it EVER rocked 🪨
Get their ass
