After buying thousands in gear what I’d recommend for a new rider is a Knox armored shirt. Then you have your summer jacket and can just layer anything you want over it. In time you can add the Knox shells for thermal and water resistance.
Next a glove with a hard TPU slider on the palm. When we fall we put our hands out instinctively so you don’t want anything that grips.
Get a good helmet but you don’t need $1000 Shoei or Arai. They are very nice but other manufacturers like HJC and Scorpion and AGV make some good affordable ones.
And as mentioned here please ride with gear. If it’s too hot to wear gear then it’s too hot to ride. Be safe.

I have a Knox armored shirt and I absolutely LOVE it, I will never go back to a bulky heavy jacket. Nothing kills the mood more than feeling like you are riding in a space suit.

I was hit by a car on the freeway and broke 3 ribs and several contusion on knees and elbows. Can tell you if I wasnt wearing my gears, It would have been worst. Please do not go cheap on these equipment. Buy one good helmet, jack, pants, gloves and shoes and you are set.

It might be a good idea to get two sets of gear; one for winter and one for summer. I have a set of ventilated Alpinestars boots, gloves, jacket and Trilobyte riding jeans for summer, and the same but waterproof and warmer for winter. It might be a very good idea to tell people not to skimp on gear as poor quality gear will fall apart much faster.

Not only is gear essential for safety, but you look much cooler with it on than not.

For gloves, I'd also get some waterproof ones, especially for touring. Cold, wet hands make it much harder to operate the controls. And heated grips.

Very helpful explanations and demos, too. I always buy 2 sets of gloves and boots and alternate using each pair through the season (thinking I'm getting more use overall.) Also upgraded armor in my summer season jacket and pants.

Um, is the arrow on the video's thumbnail supposed to be pointing at the airbags?

I did not care about gear until...

Does anyone have first hand knowledge with backpack airbags like HELITE? I'm thinking to get one, because it seems it's much easier to replace the cartridge once deployed.

I have the mechanical one and love it! It feels a seatbelt now that I'm used to it.
It's a bit heavy with the backpack attached so I mostly ride with it in the "vest mode" if I have no need for storage (which has a pocket for a bladder and space for a raincoat anyways)
Its hard to trigger it when leaving the bike with the tether attached.
The CO2 cartridge on the right strap is very clunky and annoying, the left strap has some small storage that I use for my garage remote as I can press the buttons through the fabric and a small leather keychain for the garage keys.
Fortunatelly I have not tested it in a crash yet.

@@jm4c Thank you. Do you feel that the cartridge can do any damage on your rib cage if you land on top of it in the eventuality of, God forbid, an "unpleasant" event? I didn't think it would be annoying, but I've never seen it in real life.

@@johnnyblue4799I have a Turtle 2 which has the cartridge in a similar location. The air bladder is behind the cartridge, so you should be fine.
I do imagine it would hurt if the airbag does not go off 😂

My riding buddy unfortunately tested his on a low speed slide a couple of weeks ago- and it worked as designed. He also recharged it himself andnit just took a few minutes. I went and ordered my own airbag setup the next day. The Alpinestars offroad version. It's so bulky however, I am not sure how it will be.
