- The plan with this R32 is to turbocharge it. But an R32 with 216,000 miles may need some love before adding about 500WHP. In this video we do a complete teardown of the R32 transmission and inspect all aspects. I also purchased a "built" transmission that will be going into the black R32. #r32 #humblemechanic

Humble Mechanic is like the Bob Ross of automotive RUclips, like at 8:15 when he calls one of the output shafts "Little friend" ❤️️
Awesome lighting and camera work on this one. The new shop is really showing its benefits!
I’ve done this on a few O2M’s for my 03’ VR6 GTI and my 04’ Turbo S Beetle. Never really could find information online so I kinda had to learn it on my own. Glad you’re going this, now I have a professional opinion that I can always refer to. I really hope your subscribers can see the value of having this video! Thank you!
Hands down the best Volkswagen channel on RUclips, the dedication you put into your videos is astonishing. Keep up the good work!
Just binge watched all your R32 videos because I just bought a MK4 GLI and you helped me identify some issues I have! Great videos! You have earned a subscriber!
Great Video. I did this for the 02m out of my 20AE GTI back around 2011. The 1st/2nd gear shift fork broke and I upgraded to the steel forks. No problems since.
Currently taking the manual trans class at school this semester and this video gives a great overview of what I’m learning !
Bro you helped me out so much at 2:30. I've been looking everywhere on how to get that out of my GTI and just found it. Thank you so much!
"Shaking all the gears out..." The point we're I know I'm way in over my head.
Great vid as always!
Great video Charles waiting for more R32 turbo goodness
This dual output shaft design, the DSG, the VR engines, and the W engines, are what endeared me to VW. You don't see other manufacturers coming up with this kind of stuff. Sadly I think they've been resting on their laurels since the Piech era. But reading SSP 205 again takes me back.
Very cool. Anxious to see what parts end up needing replacing on that box. Cant wait for the next one :D
I enjoy watching your vw videos. Fortunately I haven't had to do much of anything to mine except preventative maintenance. 134k miles and still drives like the day I bought it.
Had a Mk4 golf and lost 1st, 2nd and reverse. Turned out to be a rivet in one of the plates the selector rod hooks into. A 50c part and three days hard labour fitting it!
YES I needed this rebuild for my TT!
Looks pretty good for the miles!
I’d love to see this going back together, looks like an absolute nightmare to rebuild!
Those gears looked real good and was thing based on other condition of the car it would be more carnage on gears and maybe the syncros. Respect to you for taking to time to dissaselbe and also for minimal advertisement as I know it helps pay the bills but I appreciate not having to ignore/watch adds 10 plus times a watch on a 19 minute upload.
You scared me at minute 2:24 hehe!
Never seen the inside of the 02M, thanks for sharing.
Hey, want to share something that helped me when I got started doing bigger repairs. I would prop my phone and video record the work I was doing like removing an intake or something like that. Then when installing new parts if I lost track of something or wasn’t certain I could go back and reference taking it apart.
What an interesting video! There isn't much info on gearboxes as there is about engine. Amazing!
Darkside Developments goodies in that jimmy jon for sure 💪🏼
Awsome video man.All the disassembly vids are lit!
One area where VW do not underengineer is in their transmissions. Huge for the size of the cars.
You should definitely do all the up grades for that transmission so it’s ready for the other car. I’d like to see that.
I used to work at an engineering company and I had to check 1400 syncro gears a day and seeing them in this video brought flash backs to them dark days 😂
Hahaha
4:09 Master Appliance Heat Gun. A top of the line tool.
Thanks for the content buddy, it’s much appreciated!
You are really God! Professional mechanic, can't find around my neighborhood or town
Finally! You've been teasing this video for too long!
I know LOL
True hey. I've been waiting too. Lol
Thank you for the video! That trans doesn't look much different from my O2C which needs 2nd gear syncro since it takes about 10 seconds to get into second gear without grinding. It was filled with GL-5 as well which is annoying and I'm was a significant factor that contributed to that syncros demise... keep up the good work mate I know I certainly appreciate it!
always use vw orginal gearoil in that gearbox
German cars have a lot of things that are cool until they break and then they’re not cool
*cries in oil filter adapter o rings*
Sorry that the transmission was not built!
Destroyed the transmission on my supercharged mk4 r (at least we think so, can't run it w/o the clutch pedal depressed or else we get a horrible noise). Or at least the input shaft bearing was destroyed (missing balls from the bearing). Not really sure what happened.
Looking forward to seeing how you build the transmission for this build!
This and Project Binky are my 2 favorite builds on YT.
yass!!!
This and Philip Kaess, a german Audi Tuner.
Amen brother.
@ProjectBinky + HumbleMechanic...would be my two top recommendations for wrenching style/ ethos/ sensibility
Oh, a vw R32.
it looks very interesting in the transmission loved the video :)
The input shaft had lots of free play. You definitely need the shim kit since your case is worn when the outer bearing sits. I’ve fixed lots of them,
. You definitely should have gone deeper into the super common issue with these r32 transmissions. Shim kit can fix it if not too worn but lots of times the case needs a proper repair.
What are some of the other “super common” issues? Overall these are pretty solid.
@@HumbleMechanic . Hey. Just meant the issues with the input shaft outer bearing spinning and eating up the case causing freeplay in the shaft. When the shaft is loose like this it can cause havoc when paired with aftermarket clutches. / single mass flywheels. The input shaft will move and the Transmission can get stuck in reverse gear. Lots of people at first started shimming the the slave cylinder before finding out that a factory mk5 transmission shim fit between the outer bearing and case. This fixed minor movement and can be done in car. I’ve seen input shafts with more the 3/16 play though. In those it’s best to get the case fixed properly by having the outer case machined and sleeve press Fitted to restore the factory specifications
My throwout bearing on my 2010 GTI caused me to replace my whole clutch assembly. My car only had 40,000 miles at the time and VW wouldn’t pay for it. They knew the TOB was a problem for years but still declined my warranty.
Welcome to owning a German car. I love these videos but wouldn’t touch a VW with a shit stick
Great video 😊😊
Brilliant stuff, Charles - my experience with transmission strips = a big fat zero!
👍🏻
I have a 2003 GTI VR6 with 126K miles on the clock. The car is 20 years old, and has never had the 6 speed manual transmission fluid changed. VW states that the fluid is good for the 'lifetime of the vehicle' (can you believe that?!)! The car still shifts crisply, although certainly not as when new. Should I get the fluid changed, or leave it be?
I had a bunch of bracing on my DRP case on my turbo R32, made jack all of a difference and I still wrecked 4th gear. I think the 02Q is the way to go if you want to keep the manual or get a DSG. I haven't decided what I want to do with mine.
you can always use a miller locker on the transmission, that limits the slip for shure!
well, it is time to paint the gear box~ It is my favorite part.
4:05 you ALMOST said it... nice save man
Hahahha I try to keep it clean but I’m also a tech soooo
@@HumbleMechanic ahahah seems only you noticed.. keep it up man, love your vids!
Loved this video!!!
Good job Charles, think we will leave this job to the experts:):)
Also gotta kick outta seeing the HM initials on your impact wrench's battery pack. Those things ain't cheap, and they do tend to walk lol.
laalaa99stl that is why you never loan tools, specially power tools.
mmmmm, nothing like the smell of old gear oil in the morning!
Specially that smells like napalm.
awesome, awesome, i really loved the video
I see there are dents in the gear tooth edges. I suppose if these dents aren't too deep into the gear tooth they do not create an issues since they are not taking any real surface area of the gear away ? Was wondering why this stayed unmentioned. I love how easy manual transmissions are built and how easy it is to maintain them once they were popped out of the vehicle. Nothing compared to complicated automatics. Thanks for the advice on the disassembly and two questions: Why should the gears be cryo treated? And would replacing the brass shift forks actually not cause more wear on the synchro hub ?
1983violin These are identification marks from the maker and not wear. The gears are made with these ID marks. The gear edges do not make any contact-
@@danhg3885 thank you for clearing the misunderstanding.
that big ball bearing on end of input shaft... they start to spin inside of case after 30k, shim he is talking about is from 02Q and mounts from inside of case. this is just band aid which does not stop bearing to spin inside of the case. VW introduced revised case sometimes in late 2004. my car was made early 04 and was not so lucky to get it fixed under warranty since was driving about 2k per year and after 30k noticed some noises but no more warranty due to time.
Great to watch, always loved to see transmissions pulled apart. Any full kits for rebuilds you've found?
I have not love/hated a car as much as my mkIV gti vr6.
Huge fun to drive, constantly breaking, looked awesome, unholy bitch-goddess to fix and maintain, practical daily, no one in town could seem to work on it but the asses at the dealership.
I was super bummed/relieved when it was coke-canned around me in a wreck.
I know this is 4 years old but does the bevel box run off just one drive shaft?? assuming it's an open diff does that mean if the drivers wheel spins for whatever reason the car would lose it's drive??
I work in non destructive inspection. I know it's definitely overkill but I'd love to do a full magnetic particle inspection on all these gears to make sure their are no underlying cracks or defects in the metal.
I wonder if u can get custom made input an output shafts for the this trans beef it up before going for bald eagle power i seen a few cars in germany an Australia running vr6s an chasing 7s in the quarter
I don’t ever want to open up a trans. I know my limits.
Steven Andrews You think this one was complex? Try an automatic, it’s like brain surgery. Really...when you open the valve body, it looks like a brain!
Manuals are easy... autos though, im all set.
Interested to hear your thoughts with cut/damage/chips on the cogs which you can see in the video? General wear and tear? Is it flakes of metal that have come off and got stuck between the cogs?
the little chips on top of the gears are from the machining proces, so not wear related. those gears look very nice
bjorn wisman appreciate the reply, would love to rebuild my own 02J box, but leaving it to the pro’s!
Great video as usual, where’s the best place for a parts list for the 04 R32 transmission and bevel box?? I bought one and it looks like it’s missing parts…
Please set subtitle
I was wondering what made you become a volkswagen mechanic as opposed to the other car manufacturers. And what makes you work on them the most.
Amazing work. I am a fan of yours but not a mechanic. I have a VW Jetta Triptonic 2.5L 2009 and it barely has 70K miles on it. I´ve never had any problems. But I have a question. Is the transmission serviced for an oil change or are they maintenance-free? and if they do; what kind of oil do you use? Thx. Keep up the good job
Hey where is the other sensor for the one by the diff is that the speed sensor or something else
Love the video 👍
Few minor chips in the gear teeth, so just how much fluff was on the magnet in the housing then.
Almost none LOL
Hi Charles,
Question, does the 4th gear shift also have a strengthening device/block as a mod to prevent the shaft moving out under increased power due to engine mods?
What size is the tamper proof transmission drain plug (0:07) ? I tried an M16 triple square, but it seems very loose in the drain plug. Hope you can help.
Charles, isn't there a special code for the trans for the AWD version, like an 02Y or 02Q? I went through this a couple years back when I was temporarily interested in acquiring a spare for the R32. - Joe
Its an 02M no matter if its for a FWD or AWD
How convenient. i was looking to finding out a grinding noise from my 2012 jetta manual. its noisy while in neutral and clutch engaged. but it becomes quiet while clutch pedal is pressed. i was thinking that it might be input shaft bearing
Great video do you have a link for the upgraded shift fork???
Thank you for your R32 videos Charles, they all help me to take care of mine.
Do you have any link for a repair manual MKIV R32?
On Facebook one of the r32 groups has the pdf in the files section
@@HumbleMechanic which group?
“It’s cool until it fails, and then it isn’t cool at all anymore” ah, German cars for you...
how does that slave/throw out bearing tend to fail?
I have that exact same unit in my 6 speed trans that I replaced 3 months ago now I have to pump my clutch pedal to go into my first 3 gears.
After taking it out last week the unit looks perfectly fine and I had no air bubbles in my lines.
i was looking , for all episodes of this car but, i can't find them , all... are you have this episodes ?
Same trans as mk6r??
I recall my 2003 GTI VR6 had only one issue from early on through almost 300k- it had a little trouble fast-synchro-ing the 1-2 shift. At least keeping up with my shift hand. I was told through the grapevine that this was a common issue. Perhaps not so much a design flaw as a characteristic. Same trans as a mk 4 R32? I assume so.
Mine is the same way
Where are Torsen and transfer to rear?
This is a question on a different topic, I got a mk7 1.8, do those engines need timing adjustment or some specific maintenance? I’m at 75k miles, it’s the launch edition with a 5 speed.
Charles,
Do you know how many spline does that input shaft have and the diameter of it?
Thank you.
Just wondering why if automatics got an upgrade on efficiency and everything else why in the hell don't manuals get an upgrade as well...??? Thanks for the amazing video 🙏🙏🙏
Manuals will always be hindered by the Human factor
Charles your top man that video was so enlightening thankyou for this i can now move on with my 02m fzm box.. iv ordered a drp box which i shall drop in whilst sorting the fzm .. that bracing box on your gearbox how do they get fitted ...?
Thankyou charles.
Just curious why you don’t pressure wash or otherwise clean the engines and transmissions prior to disassembly?
It’s not a bad habit. I just didn’t on this one.
THAT IS SO MUCH SHIT TO REMEMBER! Damn i'd be screwed.
I like the rebuilds and great information.
Is there any way that I can get info on an automatic transmission replacement?
I got a used one for my daughters Tiguan installed it and the shop said it was wrong!! How can I get the right one?
Oh man! That’s sometimes easier said than done. Based on VIN, see if you can get them to give the trans code. Then you’ll have to look on the trans for the code. It’s kind of a pain
10:59 hello, you talk there about problem with a noise in decelartion, and so kind of "Washer kit?", my car kinda doing that kind of noise (after transmision oil change). I tried to look for what you were talking about but probably due to my poor english i didnt find it.
bit.ly/3mLncjL this is the kit you are looking for from FCP EURO
@@HumbleMechanic thank you
Is there a Toyota version of Humble Mechanic?
I’ve got a issue with my ring gear & output shaft mating gears. The ones that are permanently attached to the output shafts. Both have missing teeth & the ring gear has damage aswell. Do you know if you can replace the output shafts? any help would be really appreciated
there was pitting on the gear by front bearing
Mind if I ask where you source your replacement parts for the boxes? Does VW sell the genuine bearings ect or you source them from a bearing shop?
Thanks ✌🏻
I’m hoping vw still has them. If not, the hunt is on
I have a mk4 jetta vr6 and 1st gear does not goes in smoothly . Also reverse is rough sometimes. mounts are bad don’t really know if it matters ... any tips?
Where is the link to the tool?
Are you going to put a bolt kit inside your transaxle? If you are going to use it.
What bolt kit are you referring to?
HumbleMechanic the ones to replace the rivets on the diff.
Differential Bolt Kit ARP 204-3002 for 02A/J Trans 5 speed. ARP 204-3003 02M/Q
So to put an LSD in an 02m it requires complete case separation?
Why are there parallel grooves cut into the teeth? 11:52
Not the R32 I came here for ✌🏾
I’m sorry
Can you change that differencial for a LSD unit or Torsen stile?
If you dont mind me asking, where did you buy a "built" transmission and what did you pay for it? I got a 04 R32 turbo and my transmission went out!
One love auto in PA. paid about $2k for it
The teeth on those gears have nicks in them. Is this an issue?
Where did you get that metal tray you've got covering the bench?
Advance auto. It’s awesome. I have more than one. Lol
