Another amazing documentary on a less than beloved entry in the MK franchise. Interesting info about the historical moment and specially about the MK Gold, which is the definitive MK4 version, IMO. Keep up the good work, Pat! 👍👍
I have always wondered one thing about the entire MK franchise. "How do they come up with the ideas for the Fatalities?" Do the programmers sit around a table eating pizza and think of the most disgusting, vile, and gruesome way somebody can be killed?
You pretty much nailed it haha. Now days, they pretty much have a “Fatality team” that comes up with several fatality ideas for each character, presents them to Ed Boon, and he chooses which 2 he likes the most for each character.
How ironic that you would mention The Oregon Trail. Norman Caruso, known as The Gaming Historian here on YT, just published a 90-minute documentary on that very game.

One thing highly worth mentioning on MK Gold for Dreamcast is there actually 2 versions. The launch version had the print on disk in gold and was HEAVY with bugs. The game was later rereleased with the "Hot New" sticker on the cover, and the print on the disk was red, not gold. This had a LOT (but not all) of the bugs fixed, and is way better to play than the lanch version.

1997 was just an odd year with me and fighting games where I just wasn't satisfied with any of them between this, King Of Fighters 97 or Street Fighter 3: New Generation even though the graphics looked good. This was also when I went on a long hiatus with the MK series and had no desire to play any other 3D versions until they went back to the traditional gameplay with MK9. I had this for a few months on N64 until I traded the system and all my games in for a Playstation 1 to play Symphony Of The Night and Metal Gear Solid. This isn't a bad game but it just never felt like Mortal Kombat to me and now that you explained the connection with War Gods then that's why this game never gelled with me because it's based on that. That was amazing you got a shout out by NBA Jam Tim Kitzrow! 😊
Reiko's ending caused a stir back then, some people thought he was Shao Kahn unmasked. The creators behind Mortal Kombat Deception had some fun w/this in the game's Konquest mode. There is a side mission where Shao Kahn finds out Reiko tries on his helmet when no one is around.
To play as Meat, you have to choose Group Mode and win a match as each character. This must be done consecutively (i.e., you can't lose a single time). I don't remember if single player matches count or if you need to do it in two player mode. Also, Kitana's model and code is leftover in the arcade, PC, and Nintendo 64 versions (the PlayStation port only has her code). You can even play as her in the PC and Nintendo 64 games through cheat software (e.g., using a GameShark). The Dreamcast port/upgrade *would* have been the best version if it wasn't for all the bugs it has. Supposedly, the "Hot! New!" re-release fixed many of the bugs while still being (at least a bit) glitchy.
Interesting revisit, sir. However, I wish you brushed upon the topic that Belokk was a cut character during development that was meant to be the Sub-Boss for Mortal Kombat 4, similar to Goro, Kintaro, and Motaro. for me this was the break in the series... the move from digitized live actors to simply motion capturing 3d renders, it was rough. it sucked the life out of the franchise. so for me the last MK game was UMK3 (yes, Mortal Kombat Trilogy was more like a paper thin expansion for it with so many bugs, a greatest hits one off like Street Fighter Anniversary). as far as MK4 goes, I still dislike it... and MK Gold on Dreamcast (the red disc version) is the best edition of it but still feels like it's lacking a lot of the charm and diversity of the previous installments. the modern MK games may be prettier but they retain the flaws of this break from the original art style.
It always felt like the franchise lost all its charm when it first transitioned to 3D graphics and that it just struggled to find its identity once the team realized what other 3D juggernauts they would be up against. The gore gimmick just wasn't worth anything in 3D compared to the depth and polish of titles like Tekken and Virtua Fighter. It took years and multiple restarts before 3D Mortal Kombat found its footing again with Mortal Kombat X (after previous titles making incremental but sparse improvements). Mortal Kombat 11 rocked, but Mortal Kombat 1 feels like a step backwards, imo. Admittedly, though, it's impressive how huge this franchise has become and remains culturally relevant 30+ years later.
Mortal Kombat 4 was when I lost interest in the series. The characters were always twitching like they had Parkinson’s disease. Midway failed twice with War Gods and BIO Freaks before using the same 3D game engine used in Mortal Kombat 4. They really should have stayed 2D just one more time. The gameplay just didn’t click right with Mortal Kombat 4. TEKKEN and Virtua Fighter just did 3D fighting so much better.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-DocumentariesYeah, I get that. Capcom chose to stay in two dimensions for Street Fighter 3 and I preferred it. Mortal Kombat Trilogy was the peak for MK IMO. I stopped keeping track after MK4.. I turned 20 in 1998.. And was around the time I moved on from video games.. I will always remember the MK games from the first 3 and imo were the best for the times...
I had the PC version and got it cheap even as a special edition. I had the guide to it and discovered quickly the combo system was very broken. You could chain almost anything together after a popup move. It was too easy. Too repetitive and it never seemed to have the feel of the arcade version.
Me and my friends beat the shit out of each other on the N64... then I doscovered the PS1 version... way better than the N64... its a shame that the GOLD edition was on the dying bed of Sega...
The only severe drawback to ANY MK game on the PS1 is the loading time. On my N64, I would play the hell out of MK Trilogy. Out of all of the finishing moves, my favorite is the Brutality. Even though it was a B!TCH to pull off.

I really liked it
Jax Jax'd Jax
Mortal Kombat joke.
What did Subzero day after doing a fatality?
I got ur back.
Worst MK ever. And please, do NOT show a 4:3 game in stretched 16:9 cause it looks more ugly. Thanks!
Mortal Kombat 4 was 💯 Garbage never compare to the first second or Third and Third Ultimate
Third was terrible
hated 4 with a passion. everything about it left a bad taste
MK4 on GBC is the biggest cash grab ever and possibly the worst fighting game ever made on any system.
I couldn't agree more, it was pathetic
MK 4 looks and did look terrible compared to the previous games. It jumped to 3D too early. It just looks bad.
Am I the only one who DIDNT like MK4?
MK Gold was crap and played like ass...the N64 version is better.
God tier video just kinda annoying how used 9 minutes just showing all the fatalities…
Me and my friends beat the shit out of each other on the N64... then I doscovered the PS1 version... way better than the N64... its a shame that the GOLD edition was on the dying bed of Sega...
I agree, Great version the
The only severe drawback to ANY MK game on the PS1 is the loading time. On my N64, I would play the hell out of MK Trilogy. Out of all of the finishing moves, my favorite is the Brutality. Even though it was a B!TCH to pull off.
Congratulations on your success, Pat! I am really proud of you for how your channel has grown and how informative (and comedic!) you make your videos, and hope to meet you someday in one of those conventions if you ever do another one again and hope next time they are around the Northeast, or in the Boston/Cape Cod area!
I'm glad you enjoy my videos. I would love to attend one on the East Coast someday so we'll see :-) thanks
Awesome!
Thanks!
