Thank you so much for posting this highly informative explanation of the new square photo announcement. What a relief! I love your focus on Etsy because it's hard to come by this specific information anywhere else.
It's inconsistent that the logo appears as a rectangle in the computer shop profile and as a circle in the mobile version. They need to decide and stick to one size and shape across all platforms. Thank you for the video.
I would actually disagree with your recommendation - I think your product will get the most visibility / clicks via the mobile search page - which use landscape aspect ratio images. So I think that's the best way to go to maximise clicks.
Well, I am confused because everything you just said is exactly what I teach. Use a 4:3 aspect ratio to optimize for Etsy search since mobile accounts for 68% of sales. Not sure what you think I am recommending…
That is a challenging one because you can also preview the video by hovering and swiping over a listing. Let me do some testing and I will get a video out!
Thank you for all the great info. I took your LIGHT course and it has been invaluable for photographing my paintings. My listing are photos of my paintings, the painting uses up the whole horizontal 4x3 ratio. How can I add vertical areas on each side without having to re-photograph each painting? I use the photos on my MacBook for editing. I also use canvas.
hello, love! Thank you for taking the time to share that. My suggestion would be to go into Canva and create a custom size set to 2667x2000px and then upload the photo of your painting and place it on the custom size in a way that accounts for the cropping Etsy will do! Does this make sense?
I uploaded my listings as 4.3 and placed vital image in the middle thinking Etsy would just crop to fit to a square and would be ok! But it was cropped at the top and bottom to fit into a square, so annoying and confused as to what to do now.
Hey! That should not be the case unless they have changed something. I am happy to look into it for you! Can you email the original photo to me as well as a link to the listing and I will take a look! Admin@bykristinanicole.com
Hi, I have question. When setting up my thumbnail for listing, I used the zoom in feature to focus on product. But when I see the search results it's zoomed out automatically? Is there any differences on how the product is shown when you use zoom feature on etsy for the thumbnail?
Hi Kristina, Thank you a very very good video, What I have found as we sell rectangle products is to take the photo in Etsy recommend 4.3 making sure the product is centred, (I switch between 4.3 and 1.1 just to make sure) which isn't the best to be honest as you have to create distance to fit the product which doesn't look good it search at all but the homepage looks great, so with search being far more important, what I did is go to the listing and zoom in on the photo for your thumbnail, you have to play around with it but I now have the shop and search without cropped images, would I pick this absolutely not but it's just one of those story we have to do our best.
Great example of "making it work" Etsy is still making changes. Thank you for sharing! Browsers are NOW square in search, NOT 5:4 like they were when I released this video 2 weeks ago. So I am going to hang tight... they may eventually change to a square all around! We will see!

Hey but this square problem is happening with all pictures in your listing right? So ideally everything is done this was moving forward (not just your primary picture if I understood correctly)?
If a shopper takes advantage of the swipe feature in search or on your shop homepage without clicking into the listing then yes, all of the images are affected. I hope this makes sense. My recommendation right now on 10/31/23 is still 4:3 for ALL photos while keeping the product in the square crop!
Simply I want to know if my photo listing just squares ,good or not please,my English not very well I heard your video from last year but still can’t get a simple answer 😂
You can’t find a simple answer because the answer is not simple. Etsy displays the thumbnail 3 different ways. So you have to understand the components of that to make sure your product isn’t getting cut out. Square can work if you frame the product properly. Sorry.
You need to focus more on how Etsy will display the photo and not the product. My recommendation for all products is 4:3 while keeping the product in the square frame. This will avoid the product getting cut out when etsy changes the aspect ratio for different displays.
Not all product lends itself well to square photos. My shop home page looks horrible with the added space filled with different colors to make them fit the square area. If I crop them square I end up having to crop off the product. Thanks for a lot of busy work we didn't need.
