This was very helpful. Thank you!
Hi Kristina so am I understanding that we should do the 4;3 aspect ratio but when uploading the photos for the listing we then put it as a square image to crop? Thanks so much in advance
Wow! Thank you so much for this video, you speak clearly and focus on the important things. I will watch all your videos now 😄🙏🏻
Your awesome ❤. I wish you could be my etsy facetime coach lols of how to properly list and when to. Im just now starting out!

You are very welcome!
thank you for this very useful advices !
you are welcome!
Hi Kristina, thank you for you amazing work! If most people see product picture and videos on a vertical 16/9 smart phone screen, this vertical 16/9 ratio shoud be the most efficient format for a full screen show ?
So while there is truth to this once they click into the listing on the app... we have to get them into that listing first, meaning we have to account for the crops etsy will do in search and on the shop home. So you could just focus on the thumbnail so that the additional videos take up more space on the mobile view, but also consider people can scroll all photos in search without clicking into the listing. Find the balance that works for you!
Inkscape is what I will use to size
Aaah!! Thank you so much! I just found Etsy's new sizing thing and I was so confused Next, I found you and the confusion was resolved.
You are very very welcome!
She is the best
Thanks, love!
Can you add items in a photo ? These items are like a plant / tree / or something like this ?
Yes, this is a pro software and works in layers. However, a platform like canva is more convenient and easier to use for this concept.
This was so helpful! Thank you so much!
You are welcome, thank you for taking the time to share that with me.

I think this is why eventually i want my own website. Etsy be stressing me out
When you think about Etsy as a place to market or a traffic source and less as a home, the mindset shifts! You should have your own website and a funnel set up to send returning customers to your website from Etsy with an email list! This way Etsy markets for you and it is just another marketing option to generate leads!
Great explanation of light sources, and I recognize that natural light is always better. However, it was such a struggle to plan very day around when the sun was best for photography, which seemed like less than an hour or two each day. And the minute I got the photo staged, a cloud would come over and then the lighting would change! Once I set up a light box and could photograph 24/7, I was able to get through the hundreds of products that needed photography so that I could list and start selling them.
Natural light is not always better. Better is subjective. I use both natural and artificial light. This video was created specifically for makers who are on a budget and cannot afford artificial light or expensive setups. I am happy you found a setup that works for you! That is great!
Ahh this video brings me back to the days of masking negatives. Aspect ratio and cropping is a lost skill in the digital universe. Back in the day a photographer really had to think about what size prints you were going to potentially need and leave cropping room. This was a GREAT explanation for people with no experience with this Kristina.
Oh goodie! I am glad you found it useful and helpful for beginners! It is a lost skill for sure!
Kristina - Thanks for the great video! I'm relatively new to Etsy and searched for hours trying to figure this out before I came across your video. You've explained it well and as simply as possible - but I have to admit it still makes my brain hurt! I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to more in the future. Jim
I am sorry to hear you had such trouble finding the help you needed! If you have any additional questions please let me know! I am happy to help!
"Hey Coach" Love your content very easy to follow and apply
Oh perfect! I am so happy to hear you are finding my content useful! Thanks you for taking the time to share that!
I have a photo that is 2092 px x 2000 px but when I do your step 1, I lose much of my picture so what do I need to do for my step 1?
So you didn't start with enough pixels and sounds like you didn't frame the photo well enough to maximize the pixels you camera provides Assuming you had to cut too much of the image out. Really the only option is to retake the photo with max pixels and proper framing so you don't have to cut too many out.
This is an excellent explanation! Thank you. So this applies to the etsy search and shop homepage pics. 1. What about the actual listing photos when a customer clicks on it? Can products extend outside of the square because the ratio is not square on those? 2. Also you are saying thumbnails should be 4:3 ratio, 2667x2000 pixels and the product be kept within the square to appear correctly. Is it normal for thumbnails to appear blurry when you are listing? If not what could be causing that?
I think I just emailed you back but here is the response here as well! This applies to the first image you upload and can extend into all. 1. So this one is a little confusing as well. In search on mobile you can swipe through all the photos. So in that case if a shower were to look at all the photos by swiping in search the crop would matter. How often are people doing this? I don’t think often. Outside of search on mobile cropping only applies to the first thumbnail image. Actually all 10 images will display in the aspect ratios you choose to upload them within the actually listing. 2. Thumbnails are the listing photo “display” so this will be in search and on your shop homepage (also on Etsys main homepage if you are featured) I 100% recommend photo #1 in all of your listings being 4:3 2667x200px while keeping the product in square crop. This is the easy fool proof method. However, if you understand how Etsy will crop based on the aspect ratio you choose for that first photo, then you can also use square. Just know the top and bottom will get cut off in search on mobile! 3. Blurry can mean a lot of things. Are they sharp and clear but get blurry when you upload. This happens sometimes and is a glitch. If you photos aren’t super sharp to begin with this can be other things like setting focus, image stabilization, low light, not enough pixels.
hi, kristina. i really appreciate this whole video! so just a recap to make sure i understood the whole thing completely.. we'll need to make our product photos at 4:3 ratio which is 2667x2000 pixels while keeping the main focus of our product within square ratio / frame?
That is my recommendations for beginners who may not understand why their product is getting cropped out. This is basically a fool proof options. You can use other aspect ratios, you just need to understand how Etsy will crop. For example... Etsy will chop the top and bottom on a square!
I uploaded a square and it was cropped to a smaller square 🤔
What’s driving me nuts is I uploaded a square image and it got cropped to a smaller square 🙄 I’m guessing either it’s because my square is larger than 2000 pixels OR that they’re cropping it to a rectangle and then again cropping that to a square again 😫 so my square listing photo gets cropped off on all sides 🙄
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this. This is a glitch we have been watching. How are you uploading them? Browser or app? If you upload via the app you shouldn't have an issue. Let me know if that doesn't work though and I will look back at my threads on this topic.
@@ByKristinaNicole interesting! It was via my laptop, safari, the website. I’m working on revising those square ones back to 4:3 but I’ll be annoyed if they go fully square later on… but I guess can just crop them if they change it in future.
@@patternandcraftok try uploading via mobile app and see if that resolves it. If your product aren’t getting cut out of the square in search on mobile don’t switch them. Square is fine too you just have to know how Etsy will crop! Up to you!
This is so helpful!!
I am glad you found it useful. Thank you for letting me know!
Great infos
Thank you for taking the time to share that!
@@ByKristinaNicole thank you too, you deserve this praise
6:20 Shouldn't the images below be swapped in this part? There will be more cropping at a 4:3 ratio.
Yes! You are 100% correct! 🤦🏼♀️ I will make sure to update that in the guide! Thanks for pointing it out!
@@ByKristinaNicole I am considering using the square format. It seems like the best option for me, but in Etsy's suggestions, there's "avoid this," which leaves me with question marks. Do you think Etsy pushes back the listings of those who use this format?
@@burakzdmr Etsy contradicts itself in the handbook often. 4:3 or square is fine! Really any aspect ratio is fine as long as you know how etsy will crop. This video is a fool proof method. Etsy will not suppress listings based on aspect ratio.
@@ByKristinaNicole Thank you. Do you think 2000x2000 pixels is sufficient?
@@burakzdmr that is the minimum I would do.
Kristina you blow my mind!!!!
What if your light source is "overhead"? What should I do to the diffuser location?
Hey! I don’t recommend overhead lighting, especially if you are just using household lighting. If that is absolutely all you have then yes, a diffuser above your setup!
Great video!
I sell phone covers and Etsy has picked up that I have collages on 2 of my listings but they aren’t collages it’s just the design of the phone cover. How would I even begin to fix that 😂
I have collage images for almost all of my listings. Each one was flagged as needing improving. Since this has happened my sales my plummeted. I would get 1-3 sales a day and for the past week I've gotten only about 2 sales for the whole week. Do you believe they are hiding or putting listings that have been flagged as needing improvement in the bottom of the search results? I really don't want to change my collage images as my main image but my gut feeling is telling me they are hiding my listings.
Interesting. Myself and other coaches I have talked to assumed this was a "suggestion" but since your sales have decreased I would like to look into it can you email me you shop at support@bykristinanicole.com THANKS!
In selling a tshirt, how many pics of the same shirt can you really take? It’s hard to put a shirt 5 different ways in photos.
A ton! Styled with relevant props, On a person. Sizing graphic, color variation graphic, Design variations. front, back if there are two designs. Packaging, shipping graphics, etc...
I am very excited about this new feature. Thank you for the introduction to using it. However, I can't seem to find where in Canva to use this repeatedly. I can get to it by copying the url, but then after I generate one image and the new image opens, when I want to try again, I can't seem to find how to get back to the page where I can regenerate the image while keeping the old image. Sure wish I could show it a picture of my product and have it insert a picture of the item shown with a styled background. I sell jewelry and don't have access to models.
To get to this component in Canva you have to go to apps and then AI-Powered. I noticed as well that once you select an image to use the rest just disappears. I personally miss the way Canva functioned prior to the glow up interface. I think things will still need tweaked. The flow just isn't fully there!
Great suggestions. Very helpful that you provided a very detailed discussion of why these mistakes detract from obtaining professional and high quality photos! I must admit, though, that on your last photo, my eye can't tell which one is supposed to be better - the one with more stuff on the bottom on both sides, or the one with just the stuff on the right. Which one is better?
Thank you for taking the time to let me know you found it useful! I not exactly sure what you are asking. If you are referencing the last photo in the video. By adding the web under the cup it separated the cup from the backdrop that was almost the same color. This made the product pop more verses blending into the background.
@@ByKristinaNicole thanks for explaining that! The rest of the photo styling is so good on both it is a subtle difference in my view.
Straight forward and concise. Thank you.
Thank you for letting me know you found it useful!
I just ran across you TODAY -- and am I ever grateful! I just opened my Etsy shop and want my pictures to be REALLY good--so this will help me tremendously! I don't have much for natural light--so I assume I use the same light source info you provided, but is there anything else I should be aware of if I'm using a softbox lighting kit and don't have natural light? Thanks again for the great info!!
Hey! Thank you for taking the time to say HI! When using softboxes you still want them left and right of the setup, you may do some front angled reflection with a white board if your product needs more light on the front. But one softbox replaces natural light and the other replaces reflection!
I am trying to export photos for go imagine which requires 5:4. That doesn't seem the same as 4:5! Yours looked wider than tall, so I am confused. So do I have to do a custom setting for every photo? Also, using Photos 9.0 and it does not offer an option to change pixels. The last choice is file size, then it goes to title, etc. How do I get to the pixels?!!!
I cover both of these in the video. 2:25 and about 3:25.
