"Carol the waitress, Simon the F$%"
Yep, that'll clear the sinuses
I'm just getting over COVID and that moment genuinely made me cough my lungs up.
Emily's drink splurt was Oscar-worthy.
This is one of my favorite movies in the world.
"I think of a man, and then I take away reason and accountability." Top 10 movie quote of all time.
who knew Red Pill started in 1997?
Just thought of movie and line yesterday while watching the Dick Wolf Chicago One series. Watched Kidd be jealous for three episodes, and then tell Severide she can't be with a jealous person. Chicago Fire is the worst of the three but as a whole seem to ignore or not pay attention to previous episodes.
Right up there with “Helen the Waitress, Simon the ***.” So offensive and funny at the same time.
More accurate than anything in a college textbook today.
absolute banger line
At first glance, Melvin is an obviously despicable character, while everyone else is normal, even nice. But actually all the lead characters behave as badly, or worse, than Melvin does They are reacting to him, but they are capable of dropping to his level in a heartbeat. Melvin has real mental limitations he is trying to overcome. The only excuse for everyone else is just Melvin. They all do develop and improve by the end. Even their improvements are largely due to Melvin. Great movie.
Emily’s spit take @ 20:14 is priceless. 😂
I was so hoping she would have a great reaction to that line and she didn't disappoint!
lmao
Best reaction I've seen to this movie . Your 'spit shock' is f**king priceless 🤣😂😅
I laughed out loud at that one myself.
Had me laughing
“Heaven Can Wait” with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. The best movie. We have this one for special occasions.
I prefer an earlier version, a black & white 1941 "Here Coes Mr Jordan", starring Robert Montgomery (the real life father of Bewitched's Elizabeth Montgomery).
@@chris...9497 I’ve seen both and still prefer the newer version. The music and actors are awesome. I do like the original too.
@@bonya4585 Have you seen the Chris Rock version, "Down to Earth" (2001)?
Yeah, I like this version the best, for sure. One of the first dramas I ever saw in the theater. Still holds up, to my mind. Sad, but heartwarming.
I LOVE LOVE Heaven Can Wait - Dyan Cannon and Charles Grodin are HILARIOUS too
The moral of this story:
If you have money, you can overcome a lot of character flaws 😉
He did that because he wanted his waitress to bring him his food. His character changes because he started taking his meds finally.
I fear that Hollywood does not make movies like this anymore
Oh gosh...who else had to rewind Em's spit take at 20:13 a few times just for the joys? LOL
Me
Me
I just did, thanks for the time stamp. LMAO
Skeet Ulrich and Jamie Kennedy from Scream. Interesting, eh?
This was a classic the instant it was released. It just got shoved with way too many other movies at the time. It is a very honest take on life with ailments. You make me want to be a better man is a brilliant line.
The universe is with the viewers as she is taking a drink right at the moment he introduces Carol and Simon
- Jack won his third Oscar for this, the same year Robin Williams won for Good Will Hunting. Backstage, Jack turned to Robin and said."Well, Rob-o, now I've got one for each decade!" He won in the 80s for Terms of Endearment (Best Supporting Actor) and the 70s for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Best Actor).
- Brian, the Cafe manager who throws Melvin out was Shane Black, the screenwriter/creator of the Lethal Weapon franchise, and the writer/director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3. and The Nice Guys.
- When Helen Hunt made this, she was still starring in the sitcom Mad About You, for which she won 4 Prime Time Emmys as Best Actress in a Comedy. The year she won her Oscar, she won the second of her four Emmys.
Yes, Greg Kinnear who played Simon got nominated for best supporting actor but lost out to Robin Williams
i don't let the age gap of the actors get to me because the characters' ages are never stated. for all i care, Jack is playing an OCD author only a few years away from Carol.
Excellent movie/story. So many great lines:
"Are you totally gone? This is my private home. Do you have any idea how creepy you let yourself get?"
But the best is when she goes to his house to tell him she doesn't owe him sex for his paying the doctor, and it's the furthest thing from his mind. He truly likes her. He's not trying to exploit her.
That's the difference between men and women. For women, it appears to be a series of boxes to check: he has this, he has that, etc. ("This isn't a string of pearls, you don't send this back".)
For us men, it's simply "She's a beautiful soul, so kind and decent (every thought she has and everything she says is about being straight and good. She makes me want to be a better man). I'm going to get that girl, no matter what."
Oh my god, how wonderful you watch this movie. I loved it since it's release, but i always thought it is totally underrated. Such a good movie. One line helped me in a difficult situation of my life to put things into a different perspective and i haven't forgotten about it until today. It is the line: "I want your life for five minutes when someone's offering me a free convertible so I can get outta this city!" So much wisdom in that. One person would be lucky to have the thing wich someone else is complaining about.
You make me want to be a better man. Such a great heartfelt quote.
OMG a line I was waiting for was punctuated by Emily spitting up so violently, I can't stop laughing.
In a year when Titanic smashed the Academy awards for everything other than Best Actor and Best Actress. This movie showed what excellent actors can do.
Yes, Helen Hunt beat out Kate Winslet for best actress
The dog steals the whole movie away from the star studded cast. Verdal was my favorite character.
22:54 that isn't the actor who played bulk in power rangers , that's actor Tom McGowan who played pat in the movie heavyweights, bulk was played by Paul Schrier
Excellent use of "grok" naturally in a sentence.
Water brother!
An all time great Comedy, and every actor nailed it!
"People who talk in metaphors oughta shampoo my crotch." Still makes me LOL
I saw the thumbnail for this video and that's the first phrase that popped in to my head!
My Dad was not the most demonstrative movie watcher. He would usually come out with the odd chuckle or two during a movie he really enjoyed but this was one of those rare occasions where just about everything Nicholson said had him crying. Bonus movie watching fun! 😂
In case nobody else mentioned it, Brooks went after Betty White to play Helen Hunt’s mother, but she couldn’t get past putting the dog down the garbage chute and repeatedly turned it down so Shirley Knight lucked out. Betty and Jack might have been fun to watch in the same scene together - Brooks would have had to write some more stuff for them to do together or else be found guilty of cinematic malpractice. 😜
Another great reaction, y'alls videos are always enjoyable. 👍👍👍👍
At the very end, the thing that folks tend to miss? When he opened the door for her to walk into the bakery? He stepped on a crack without worrying about it.
"You make me want to be a better man." Still slays me to this day. Thanks for watching it and reminding me about how wonderful this movie is.
Recommending three Nicholas Hoult films:
-"About A Boy" (2002); Hoult at age 13 holding his own against costars Hugh Grant and Toni Collette; story shares a category and a vibe with "As Good as It Gets"
-"Warm Bodies" (2013); English actor Hoult costarring with an Australian actress on location in Montreal to portray a word event set in the USA
-"Renfield" (2023); Hoult in the title role set in modern times and toe-to-toe acting performances with his costar Nick Cage
All three of these are quirky, feel like independent films, and address deeply human issues with insight and bizarre humor.
Both of you would love these. If you loved "Bubba Ho-Tep" (2002) and "Love Actually" (2003), then you'd love the three Hoult films.
If you want a more serious-toned film, I recommend "Reign Over Me" (2007); while it stars Adam Sandler, it's not an Adam Sandler movie and not a usual Adam Sandler role. But it is brutally honest.
13:45 BARS
20:12 OMG, Emily, perfect reaction to that line. 😂
There was also Cuba Gooding Jr in this movie who was big in Jerry McGuire. I liked the chemistry and bonding with Greg Kinnear and Helen Hunt.
Personally, I recommend Romantic Comedy, which is a movie that's a well done parody of the Romantic Comedy genre starring Rebel Wilson, and it also has a good message
Such a fantastic film and I'm so pleased you've reacted to it. It's a film that couldn't be made today, as Melvin's edge would upset far too many people, who would be missing the point as always.
I love that Helen Hunt won for this. She’s extremely talented. Loved her in Mad About You. Talk about 90s!
Yeah, she beat out Kate Winslet for Titanic when she won
i recommend you :
🔥 *Anger Management* (2003) 🔥
_starring Adam Sandler & _*_Jack Nicholson_*
yes please
+2
@@peperino25NO! That was one of the worst movies ever made. Can we please shut up about adam sandler… he’s the biggest loser to ever make it in Hollywood
I luv Pippin❣️ His ratings always match mine too. Waiting for his review and watching him is a wonderful part of your videos.
Try Terms of Endearment made by the same people as As good as it gets .. Its a very emotional film about the relationship between a mother and daughter Its full on drama with a great Oscar winning performance by Jack Nicolson..
Terms of Endearment is *great*. Niagara falls of a tearjerker though.
Finally a movie i like . Great movie👍. Great reaction 😂.
If you haven't seen it, another great James L. Brooks comedy is 1987's _Broadcast News_ . Another 90s movie that gets called a romantic comedy (because Hugh Grant during his floppy hair period) but is more of a dark comedy/satire where some arguably bad people find out love and commitment are valuable is 1994's _Four Weddings and a Funeral_ .
this is a "one of a kind in a lifetime" movie.. as much can be hated, than loved
One of mt fav 🎥. Fourth time watching 🤘
Try Soap Dish. Very funny. A romcom mixed with other things and another ridiculous cast.
20:14 is one of the best, most honest reactions ever to make it on RUclips. They told you the whole movie exactly who his character is, and even as he's growing and changing, he's still that guy.
Greg Kinnear's character in this is one of the most loveable of all time. Wish he was real.
Somethings gotta give with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson would be a good one
Yes. It addresses the age gap issue.
my mom was married to my stepdad, 7 years younger than me for like 22 years when he died of heart failure
Such an absolute feel-good movie. Just so darn delightful.
Aww you left out the best part of that line "Some of us have great stories, pretty stories that take place at lakes with boats and friends and noodle salad. Just no one in this car. But a lot of people, that's their story; good times, noodle salad" When I got sick that line ment a lot to me. All my friends were having great lives right after college and my life went off a cliff. Some people do have great lives just no one in this car. Also the line What if this is as good as it gets? It made me feel like I wasn't alone.
You caught me off guard When you said you were confusing this movie with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I was waiting for you to say the romantic comedy Somethings Got To Give from 2003 with a stacked cast of Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, Keanu Reeves, Frances McDormand, Amanda Peet and Jon Favreau. I definitely suggest watching it sometime. If you want another mental disorder movie that is also labeled as a romantic/ "comedy" I suggest Silver Linings Playbook with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro.
Jack Nicholson was great in this movie. I'd like to suggest a movie for you Honeymoon in Vegas star Nicolas Cage Sarah Jessica Parker and James caan and a thousand Elvis impersonators. It is an outrageous comedy and you will absolutely love it. Nicolas Cage is very game during this movie.
Love this movie.💙
So many commenters thinking Jack’s misanthropic lines are pearls of wisdom.
If you want another romantic comedy where the main characters annoy each other, and something even guys can watch, check out Overboard with Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Great movie!
Absolutely agree. It's a great movie!
Nobody does crazy better than Jack
When Jack got bored, or was not needed for different scenes, he would bring the dog for a walk.
As someone who deals with severe ADHD, I actually really enjoy this movie, because it does deal with REAL issues that people have and some of the struggles that that they have trying to relate to other people.
On a side note, I have a cousin who is a few years older than me that I grew up with, who was diagnosed in his mid forties with severe ADHD/OCD, so the OCD aspect of this movie hits a little different for me now.
This is a great movie and has the most beautiful nude scene ever filmed.
Sorry to ask for something, but i just looked for a reaction to "Taking Care of Business" with Jim Belushi from 1990 and i don't think there is one. Did find a review from the actual Roger Ebert and he gave it 3 stars...hopefully that's 3 out of 4 and not 10.😅 Whether ya find it or not, you guys are great. Continued success.🇺🇸👍🇺🇸🤘🇺🇸
Great film, beautifully written and acted. Proof that Hollywood can make intelligent cinema when it tries. Very watchable reaction as no annoying or needless interruptions. 10/10
Since it wasn't mentioned in the reaction or the comments so far, Melvin's shrink, Dr. Green, was played by Lawrence Kasdan, writer/director of Body Heat (1981), Silverado (1985), The Big Chill (1983), as well as co-screenwriter of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and SW: Return of the Jedi (1983).
Writer/director Lawrence Kasdan played the psychiatrist Dr.Green. Kasdan wrote the scripts for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. He wrote and directed Body Heat, The Big Chill, and Silverado among others.
Legend of Billie Jean for Yeardley Smith?
I love this movie.
Love this movie. So glad to see someone reacting to it.
Never quite got Nicholson winning best actor for this but as it ages his performance gets better. Such an unconventional romantic comedy
For some reason, Harold Ramis and Lawrence Kasdan struck me as particularly well cast as doctors.
pippin
I saw this movie in the theaters with my parents. Even as a teenager, the old man performance by Jack Nicholson touched something inside of me and it made me cry. Especially that "you make me want to be a better man" line. Later that was literally how I felt about my wife, rest her soul.
“Reason & Accountability” 💯 Facts 😒☕️
I highly recommend watching something’s gotta give as a good companion movie ❤️❤️❤️
I will second that. Another unexpected movie well worth watching. I will say no more, don't want to spoil any of it.
I'm just here for Emily's face after the, "I think of a man..." line. ;)
Ditto
No Freaking Way, we have done it! Emilie FINALLY loves a romantic comedy! 😆 Make sense though cause it is such a great script with great characters and great dialogue. It's a movie first that happens to have romantic elements in it.
Whenever I think of a great doctor appearing out of nowhere to save the day I always think of Harold Ramis now in this role. Just such a superhero in this scenario.
definitely do "About Schmidt"
have you seen grosse point blanke? that might be a romantic-ish comedy action that you could enjoy.
"Something's Gotta Give" another good Nicolson dramadie. And perhaps "Heartburn" with Nicolson and Meryl Streep. Or even "Terms of Endearment" Nicolson and Shirley McClain.
I was gonna mention "Something's Gotta Give". Love that movie.
I was really happy that you enjoyed this movie. There is just something about it that works so well. I was totally shocked when I heard the word grok. i don't think I have ever heard any one say it. It has been a favorite of mine since I was young and read Stranger in a strange Land in 70's. Top author for me )
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Why does Nicholson sound like Minnie Mouse
Greg Kinnear plays literally the polar opposite character in Sabrina with Harrison Ford. Thats an underrated romantic comedy that I actually think you'd like.
Just Summ, that is easy, Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman. Where a man has to dress as a woman to get an acting part on a soap opera and learns about the foibles of womanhood. Laugh out loud funny and great meaning ful story like this but better. Outstanding.
My favorite all time quote in my day to day. "I think of man, and then I take away reason and accountability."
This movie is SO endearing, and only Jack Nicholson could pull off a character like this, and make you love him and root for him!
Very good movie, Jack is frequently captivating but difficult to like. Its what makes him a great actor, the ability to walk that line. To engage you even if you don't like the character. With that style of character in mind I think you ought to watch "Scent Of A Woman" with Robert DeNiro. Another excellent movie and another exceptional performance.
I'm fairly certain Scent of a Woman was Al Pacino.
Not only was it definitely Al Pacino, but he also won an Oscar for it
Thank you for the correction, you are of course correct. For some reason I often get the two mixed up. Still recommend the movie though.
I adored this movie. Jack is also in a similar movie that came out a bit later, but the name of it escapes me. Not QUITE as good, but also very good. Keanu Reeves plays a minor role in it.
Something's Gotta Give! :)
To the surprise of nobody, both Jack Nicholson & Helen Hunt won Oscars for actor/actress for this movie. Great writing for sure, but their performances were incredible....over the top comedy, yet they made the characters totally believable.
One of the best movies, I love it!!
#title Black Cat White Cat 1998
The age thing didn't bother me one bit- even when I first watched it as a child. They complement each other.
I didn't feel any chemistry between them, but the rest of the movie is good.
Only one thing that matters about age, is are they of legal age or not. As long as two consensual adults (meaning at least 18) want to date, their age is irrelevant.
Speaking as someone who spent 28 yrs with a man 19 yrs older than me, I can honestly say I wish people would get over the whole age difference weirdness. If both parties are adults and happy with each other, then wgaf how old they are? 🙄
It's funny, isn't it? They're old enough to have children, but they aren't old enough to choose the partner they want.
Just an observation from someone who has been on both sides. I've dated a lady 10 years younger and I've dated up to 25 years older. From my experience people were way more accepting and supportive when the female was the older one. They never heard negative comments. I heard a lot like robbing the cradle, and worse because I was 29 dating a 20 year old. Which is much closer than when I was 21 dating a 43 year old woman. I just found it odd.
@@jasonnelson6624 people should check their knee-jerk reactions.
@@angelagraves865 they should. Really if the two people are happy who cares? Of course assuming they both are adults.
Omg, seeing Emily almost spew made my day so much better. Thanks, you two!
Inner-Space with Martin Short, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. Very cool.
13:09 For more Yeardley Smith watch Dharma & Greg.
Or City Slickers.
The Other Sister staring Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi is a good romantic comedy.
love you guys keep it up :)
Both Nicholson and Hunt won Best Actor/Actress Oscars for this movie.
Did I hear Emily just throw out a "grok" at 35:15??? My head snapped hearing that as a massive Heinlein fan. Glad you watched this movie as well, brilliant film.
The original title of the movie was Old Friends. But when they went over the script they liked that phrase that Jack said..."Is this as good as it gets" and they got their new title.
Love this movie! I would highly recommend The Fisher King as a movie you would love next! (My favorite Robin Williams Movie!)
Cool reaction as always Emily & Matthew, you both take care and have a good night
This is my favorite movie. It's great to see someone viewing it for the first time. Good times, noodle salad.
13:40 My favorite line in the film. 😁 Jack deserved his third Oscar for this. One of my favorite Jack roles, up there with the Joker, and this movie got me through a really bad break-up that happened a few weeks before I saw this in theaters. Twice.
20:11 That'll teach ya, Emily! 😉🤣
