    #1:
The origins of the harpies were considered a mystery before, and it's probable that the information is also not widely known in-universe. The two main possibilities were that they were a group of female night elves who betrayed and were cursed by Queen Azshara, mostly a legend, and Brann Bronzebeard's theory that they were descendants of the Ancient Aviana. As you might expect, the latter theory was proven to be correct.
    #2:
Aviana's domain was the ancient tree known as G'Hanir, the Mother Tree, the parent of Nordrassil, which was considered a haven and an afterlife for all the winged creatures of Azeroth, including the dragons. When Aviana was slain during the War of the Ancients, the tree wilted and died, driving many of the creatures formerly under Aviana's protection mad. As such, the majority of her children, the harpies, turned into vile and chaotic beings, driven to spread mischief and sorrow. Interestingly enough, while many harpies are obsessed with obtaining whatever remnant of Aviana there might be, such as the Branch of G'hanir, others distance themselves from their goddess, such as the Wormwing harpies, who even sought to destroy her shrine and prevent Aviana's rebirth.
    #3:
Harpies are said to hail from the Stonetalon Mountains, which they, indeed, consider to be their ancestral homeland. While originally content to confine themselves to Stonetalon, the harpies have since spread to all of the continents of Azeroth, with the exception of Pandaria. Interestingly enough, the Bloodfury harpies have been stated to be the source of the increasing number of harpies across Kalimdor, perhaps indicating a sort of mother tribe.
    #4:
The harpies are very interested in shiny objects, from gems and ore to scavenged trinkets and items. As such, many harpies have started collaborating and allying with kobolds. Oftentimes, this arrangement entails the kobolds trading their mined shiny things to the harpies in exchange for their protection and their ear wax, which the kobolds use to make candles.
    #5:
During the founding of Durotar, the local harpies proved to be a great nuisance to the orcs, as they often harassed their caravans and supply lines (which they still do). As such, Thrall's chief of security, Nazgrel, hired the half-orc Rexxar to kill the harpy leader, Bloodfeather. While successful, the Witchwing harpies, possibly the same group, continued harassing the Horde in the Barrens. They were led by Bloodfeather's sister, Serena Bloodfeather. Interestingly enough, there is also a Bloodfeather tribe of harpies living in Teldrassil, although it's unclear if or how they would be related.
    #6:
There are no male harpies known to exist, and it is unclear how the harpies propagate their race. The non-canon RPG books mentioned the possibility that harpies kidnap males of other races for this purpose, in addition to the possibility that that is just a rumor and they reproduce without males. Though, like I said, the source for these possibilities has been declared non-canon.

I really wish Legion had more for Aviana to do rather than just be a slow-fall "event" NPC, especially since she was particularly interesting (imo) in Cataclysm when the Twilight's Hammer was trying so damn hard to find her reincarnated egg and corrupt it.
I guess that's my problem with the Ancients in Legion in general. I really wished more than just Cenarius appeared. Once again, I feel like Cataclysm did them so much better than they ever were done in WoW. Tortolla ftw.

Necroxis That's fair, though I haven't done the Druid campaign, and I heard some others appear there. I guess an "explanation" could be:
      a) They don't give a crap; fair enough, the Ancients took a lot of persuading to participate in the WotA
      b) They're off fighting the Legion in other areas of Azeroth under attack, since this is supposed to be "a bigger invasion than WotA". Obviously.
      I like Aviana too :p

True enough, I just think it takes even a slight appearance to make a narrative seem more world-inclusive.
Like if we saw Cenarius and some of the other ancients helping us fight corrupted Ysera at the end of the Val'sharah storyline, rather than ONLY the npcs from the storyline. Or, hell, even see what Cenarius thought about Ysera's corruption and death, considering his connection with her.
Ah well. We can always want for more :P

      Necroxis
personally I hate how the hyail quests had us revive the slain ancients ,takes away the impact of death
cenarius being revived made me wonder, why didn't they do that earlier

I do too , but it would be too over power lore wise , if Blizzard stuck to the Night Elf lore , that 1 Night Elf could create a new subrace through magic .

    Origin of the Harpies:
Blizzard needed some weak flying creep. They created harpies.

wait whaaa?! thats messed up, i thought that was retconned, like some races are made not by procreating, and other races are only male due to their elemental origins such as troggs. but like harpies........oh man........uhm.....i always thought maybe they self procreated, like all harpies could lay fertalised eggs. its a fantasy thing it be wierd in real life but its fantasy. id prefer that over rape....:/

@@mudshrooze to be fair it makes sence that they need humanoid semen. You know...because there aren't any male harpies. This could possibly be an evolutionary edvantige because they don't need their own males to "inpregnate" them. I can see that work in real life. Even tho it's wrong on so many levels

    • @Dearth_Vader
      @Dearth_Vader 6 лет назад +1

There are some animals that can lay eggs that are basically clones of themselves, probably what harpies do if kidnapping men isn't the case

Fun fact, a Harpy AND a Banshee were arguing over who'd get to ride him first. Then they got pyro-blasted.

It is possible that Harpies reproduce through parthenogenesis, which is when females reproduce without the need of males. It is also a possibility that one simply can't differentiate between male and female harpies, since like birds they have internal genitalia and don't share the same male and female dimorphism that mammals have.
