I trained in Tae Kwon Do for more than twice the amount of time that Joe did and barely got to my brown belt. Joe’s technique, quickness and timing is phenomenal. Especially his counter back kick (the kick that knocked his opponent out in tournament). I’ve seen him fold heavy bags with it. So yes, Joe is extremely well versed and experienced in martial arts. Much respect to his humility around it.

@@grismor1884 Yes, I am absolutely positive I trained in Tae Kwon Do (for more than 6 years). I think you’re confusing the different Tae Kwon Do federations. In WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) the brown belt comes prior to receiving your black belt. In ITF (International Tae Kwon Do Federation) they use a red belt instead of a brown belt. I obviously trained in WTF. Just Google it. You should be sure of your information prior to challenging my truthfulness. Have a great weekend.

I believe you and will agree with the comment before yours. In the Montreal area, almost all WTF schools used the white, yellow, green, blue, brown, black belt colouring system. Brown belts tended to train for a very long time before being tested for their black belts. I know that some US schools used the red belt prior to black but in the WTF system that I trained under, red didn’t exist.

I boxed, kickboxed, did kyokushin karate tournaments and this move, the spinning back kick, was my bread and butter. Launched a few people like this. In boxing, it was my straight right. Fought in the 80’s like Joe. It was brutal back then...we didn’t know any better.

In 70s and 80s, you had either Tae Kwon Do, karate or Judo, and maybe a little kung fu and aikido. There was really nothing else. No bjj, no thai boxing, no real info on kick boxing. There were no books on martial arts that were any good. Now you have 10,000 free vids on youtube teaching you everything. Back then, we all thought karate ruled. Grappling wasn't even on our radar, including Judo, which was thought was inferior to karate. In other words, we didn't know much. MMA changed everything.

MrSsfsfsf Unless you trained in Kyokushin at that time, which I did (and still do). Old school Kyokushin, when I trained regularly with Shoshu Shigeru Oyama, had Judo in it because the founder, Mas Oyama, had a black belt in Judo and incorporated Judo when he developed Kyokushin.

I don't know what club you trained in but I did 80's Taekwondo complete with Grappling and Throws, my club was a small club with no interest in Tournaments but those cats could fight. There were no belts or gradings, everybody wore a white belt for beginners or a black belt meaning you should know your fukn doing by now and could be challenged for position in the internal ranking. The closer you were to pole position the more time you got to spend with the instructor but that usually meant getting your arse whooped for demonstrations and we took it lol. You just had to find a club that wasn't affiliated with WTF or ITF and all their bullshit regulating trying to appease the West. I was told it was Taekwondo, but it was more like its predecessor Hapki-Yoo-Sool

...jujutsu has been a practice since the 17th in Japan for example. You being ignorant and thinking nobody knew anything about martial arts does not make it global fact / truth.
MMA changed alot, it got people who shouldnt practice anything that has to do with martial arts at all, interested and started with this comparison on which martial arts is the best and "this guy would _kill_ that guy) like thats what its all about.
I watch mma, but i respect a judo practitioner who dedicated his life to the art, training his body mind in a humble fascion, rather much more than your average mma meathead.
Ufc is becoming a joke and a disgrace. Fuck it.

If you didn't know grappling is the most dominant aspect of fighting, you have a lot to learn. Even Rogan will tell you that, and he's a kick boxer. It's hard to kick someone,or punch for that matter, when you're laying on your back.

I was doing a lot of tournaments during the late 80s as well, they were almost always on a basketball/gym court no matter if it was a small one or the AAU National Championships or Canadian Internationals. I'm 8yrs younger than Joe so I was too young for the full contact, although I was in Karate and I didn't do any competitions with head gear or chest gear...I think that's a TKD thing even for full contact we never had those pads...just foot and hand.

yeah but with popularity comes con artist and that's what you have to watch out for. where there are legit jj schools there are also illegitimate ones as well that just want to take your money. same thing happended to karate in the 80's once it became popular. you had karete schools that were legit and ones that werent and just wanted to take peoples money.

    "How does that feel?"
"To hit somebody? It feels wierd."
That my friends is where punching power comes from. The fear of hitting someone causes one to pull their punches.
Look at the BKFC (Bare knuckle). Those guys are highly trained yet they still punch awkward as they are afraid of punching flesh on flesh.
