Thanks. I'd forgotten that I discovered the problem, and also discovered that I was an idiot. The noise was actually caused by a 2 foot long 1/2" breaker bar banging into the steel rim of the spare wheel under the boot carpet. I'd lent the car to a friend who flattened the battery, then when accessing the jump leads that I also stored with the spare wheel, they'd not put everything back neat and tidy. I discovered this on my way to the mechanic to have it looked at, saved many hours of chargeable time with them maybe never looking at that end of the car.
In my case it's the stabilizer links...😅 Among many others.Mine's the 2.3 Duratec HE so there's also the ever present steering pump whine.And yes,the hydraulic steering pump has been replaced with a new unit...😅
