Since SIP, I started watching the series all over again on Netflix (having been a fan of the show in the 80s/90s). Just as I got to Season 8, Netflix ended the free showings on July 1st. Thank goodness I also have Hulu, and can finish watching the last several seasons, after all. I'd forgotten just how amazing this show was - the characters, the writing, the camera work...all those moving parts...funny and sentimental at the same time. Definitely one of the best sitcoms of all-time.

Cliff Calvin explains the buffalo theory to Norm. Well, you see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it’s the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

It wasn’t a series finale but Diane’s exit in “I Do, Adieu” at the end of season 5 was the best written exit for a character ever. Sam’s character started off smart and then morphed into a dufus after a while, the butt of Diane’s jokes. But in this episode, he reverted back to being smart. Diane believed she would be back. Sam knew her better than she knew herself. She said goodbye for 6 months. He said his goodbye forever. Since Shelly Long was leaving, Diane had to leave but the writers found a way to give us a glimpse of what we all wanted to see anyway, the flash forward to the old married couple Sam and Diane dancing together to “What’ll I Do” as the scene faded to black. It was perfect. I would love to have them refilm that last scene now without the old people makeup since they’re about the age they were supposed to be in the flash forward. How about one of you people with connections make that happen. No writing would be required, just a reshoot using the same script.
So many funny episodes but I never laughed harder than I did on the one where Cliff and Diane went on the double date with Carla and some guy. At Carla’s recommendation, Cliff sang “Misty” and made his move on Diane. Whew. Too funny.

The writers did indulge our Sam/Diane fantasy and let us see how they grew old together (Actually that episode is on tonight on the Decades Channel which airs back to back episodes every night). I interpret Sam's "Have a good life" line more as a farewell to Shelley Long. Diane, as written, would not have abandoned Sam. At the least, she would've returned to face him. 22: the writers named the character "Woody" before casting Woody Harrelson.
23: the cast was fond of playing practical jokes on each other; one time they "pantsed" Woody Harrelson not knowing that he wasn't wearing underwear.
24: Lilith was only supposed to appear in one episode but the producers liked Bebe Neuwirth so much they brought her back the following season and made Lilith a recurring character.
25: the writers have said that at the time they feared Shelley Long's departure would hurt the show but in hindsight they feel it helped the show because they felt they had done all they could with the relationship of Sam & Diane.
26: Kirstie Alley is the only "Cheers" cast member who declined a chance to appear on "Frazier"; Alley said she couldn't appear on a show about a psychiatrist because it conflicted with her beliefs as a Scientologist.

I loved this series! It writing and acting was done in such an intelligent way that Cheers struck me as an intelligently funny show.
In 2010, I was returning from a vacation in Europe where the routing was from Frankfurt to Boston and onward to Toronto. I had cashed in frequent flyer points, and, flew first class. In Frankfurt, Lufthansa had its First Class Terminal. That place was like a spa!
My layover in Boston was to be 6 hours long. I had intended to find "Cheers", because I loved the show that much.
That was my lucky day. In the First Class Terminal were Rhea Perlman and Danny De Vito! At the buffet, Rhea stood in front of me, and, took all of the lox. She turned to me, and, said, "I guess that I took the last of it." I smiled, and, responded, "Don't worry. I speak German fluently, and, will ask the chef to prepare more."
    What an interaction!
