I have one of these and done a lot of experimenting with it. What you need, is the GPU cooling kit sold by HDPLEX. This is way, way more substantial than the rather wimpy GPU cooling kit Streacom offers. Next, the SilverStone Nightjar NJ450-SXL passive PSU. Fits perfectly within the DB4 and performs really well (also, no need for a separate power brick anymore). Get some extra heat pipes and brackets, then assemble it so that the CPU heats up one panel and the GPU two. This gives you a theoretical cooling performance of 65W for the CPU and 130W for the GPU (Streacom rates each panel at 65W). I’ve been running an i7-8700 with a GTX 1660 Ti, runs on the edge of the limit but without issue - there is actually some airflow across the VRM’s and memory of the GPU due to convection. However... I’ve also created a custom top cover with a hole in it to fit a Noctua 120 mm fan. This is placed exactly above the GPU and is configured to run at inaudible speeds (400-900 rpm). This dramatically improves cooling performance. So much so, I am now running a 3800X and RTX 2060 Super, at good temps. All I can hear is a touch of coil whine from the GPU when I listen closely.

    • @Gamerillion

There was on an older video by Tek Syndicate where they mention a dual panel cpu cooler, pair that with your mods and make sure to spread the heat to other parts of each panel as in the Tek Syndicate video they realized the cooling contact from the streacom heat pipes is not optimal, below is the video. Too bad the DB6 and DB10 never made it to production.
      ruclips.net/video/AbpfC4yrAMQ/видео.html
let us know how we can help you with testing this out, would seriously consider this case if it was a little cheaper or had more complete cooling solutions for a mini rtx 2070.

    • @kasimirdenhertog3516
      @kasimirdenhertog3516 4 года назад

John Geddes interesting video. I’ve had the CPU connected to multiple panels, but for me, a 65W CPU is powerful enough and I rather want to use the cooling capacity for the GPU. The RTX 2070 has been succeeded by the RTX 2070 Super, which is bigger and uses more power, the RTX 2060 Super I have has pretty much the performance of the RTX 2070 and is the maximum you can fit both in size and power in the DB4. If you were thinking about cooling such a card passively with the DB4, forget it, you need way more fins and heatsinks for that. They did this with the MonsterLabo case and even that solution is not optimal, because of the difficulty of passively cooling the VRM’s and memory chips.

About the PicoPSU modules. The 12V rated ones simply pass through the 12V line. So you get however much power your AC-DC PSU can supply (as long as you run beefy enough cables ofc). I tend to just use the 160W version of the cheap PicoPSU modules, which is enough for a few HDDs and the mainboard. 12V coming from 2x 350W AC-DC PSUs powering a 3770K with a GTX Titan and 2 HDDs + SSD inside an old compact stereo amp case.
Also you might wanna try the graphene thermal pads, they're supposedly better than either calssical thermal pads or thermal paste.

They can add optional support for a 120/140mm fan (Users can either use or not) support at the bottom ( may be not possible with IOs) or at top. Most of the premium Noctua fans are silent fans.
Also top panel either ventilated or should have some air passage, so hot air inside case can go outside directly.

For those who think the GPU cooling kit from Streacom may turn this into a gaming rig: don’t get your hopes up! It only provides 65W of cooling potential. You can cool a GTX 1650 max with it, and even that will probably have to be underclocked as that’s a 75W card. Now, the HDPLEX GPU kit offers much more potential, as it features twice the heatpipes and twice the capacity.

Why not combining massive passive cooling by using the panels of a case (like seen here) plus active fan cooling within the case? If top and bottom were perforated, the air could be pushed effective from one side to another. I‘d love to see design like the DA2, without those gaps at top and bottom.

  • @chrismayfield916

Given that those heat pipes were not press-fitted into the side aluminum block, adding some thermal grease to the pipes before sliding them in may help lower thermals a little more too. It will make the aluminum block a more effective spreader to the side panel; which in turn spreads the heat out over the side panel more.

Probably have to hook things up with quick connect fittings to keep it somewhat serviceable

great video there, Optimum Tech. you really know your stuff. i think at this stage you should get into designing an SFF case. as regards the DB4, i wonder why only one case panel could be leveraged for cooling in a serious way - or, given that that's the situation, why not use one large curved super-finned panel and make the rest from a rigid open mesh. seems a bit of a waste to have such sophisticated panels all-round, when some of them do very little.

I´ve had this case for some years now and the GPU cooler is only designed to cool a max 75W TDP, so you can only use a GTX 1050ti or a plain 1650. However, there´s also another kit that allows to disspate the heat of the CPU to two side panels, so it could be used with a more powerful CPU or at least don´t have that much heat on only one of them.

You can run faster GPU + CPU in this:
Add the Streacom LH6 CPU HP kit - Brings the cooling performance up to 95W TDP.
Raise the hat a bit for the heat to move out better.
    (diy+fans)
You can also fit SFX and ATX PSUs easily: there´s enough room in the back compartment.
    I´ve runned mine with following:
Seasonic X-650(ATX PSU: Semipassive + Fully modular, Installed sideways)
    i7-7700T(no LH6)
EGVA SC 1060(raised the hat 4-5mm)
    Seasonic X-650
    i7-7700T(no LH6)
    Inno3d 1070(raised the hat 40-50mm)
Next I was planning to go with:
    Seasonic X-650
    i9-9900K(with the LH6)
Inno3d 2060S(raise the hat 4-5mm or DIY better one: holes/mesh/material etc)

If you wanna get really creative you could mount BIG fans to the side panels or to the(elevated+meshed) hat.

From my uneducated engineering perspective, it is very annoying when companies destroy good product by going extreme. Designing a quiet case with the bulk of cooling made by passive elements makes much sense. Avoiding fans at all costs makes no sense.
I'd buy a full-scale case like that. The concept is great. I hope more manufacturers incorporate using the body of the case for passive cooling. It doesn't have to be fan-less though. Few quality fans running slow do not make noise!

They need fins on the in side of the side walls with vented bottom n top that doubles the heat exchange and natural pulls cooler air though the system :-)

This is great, hobby project. Might be nice storage server in the office with some Intel Core i3. You built it for gaming but I wonder what would you use for storage server with directly attached disks? Some board with lots of SATA ports might work very well.

The amount of detail is amazing. Looking for a VRM and fixing it? I don't think many other YT'ers would've done that. They'd be like it's fine for 720P gaming at low settings but what can you do?

So hypothetically this is just a cool case for building mom a decent little home PC with a good i5 and no GPU since she’ll never be gaming on it.

I would enjoy a follow-up on silent builds. I've been using the HDPLEX H5 case without any fans for a few years. The i5 6600K and the GTX 1060 both use the passive case heatsinks. It does get too hot though and hot air gets trapped inside the case making VRAM and other unconnected components reach too high temperatures. Now I run it without the top plate on and one silent low RPM 120mm fan resting on the GPU and one on the CPU. Still silent but looks bad. At some point I want to CNC the top plate to add air flow holes and holes to allow the fans to be mounted to the top plate.

Sure, make it into a storage server if you like dead HDDs from overheating.

The Streacom DB4 is my current HTPC (completely passive). It is mainly used for streaming tv series, browsing the web, playing game through emulators (Cemu being the most advanced one) and WoW (Classic and Retail).
    My setup:
    Intel i5 8600k
    16 GB Ram
Gtx 1050ti (with Streacom GPU kit)
    2 500GB Nvme drives
    Streacom 240W PSU
    Temps are ok:
CPU hitting max 70-80 degrees when stress tested (Idle around 37 degrees).
GPU hitting max 70 degrees when gaming.
Feel free to ask me questions and I will answer as best I can...

It's a pretty expensive case to be honest, then a power brick and Pico psu on top. Hard to justify for a HT PC which could be hidden away in an AV rack or cupboard. I mean an ex office SFF Lenovo/Dell would do for that purpose. So if it can't game decently it's not fit for purpose as a potato will do HT duty. Thanks for reviewing it!

Very, very beautiful! Look also at Cirrus7:silent computers! I for myself do own both, a silent Streacom PC, a silent Cirrus7 PC and a silent Intel NUC. I don‘t like hell‘s loud noises of fans, of a 65W CPU or a small Intel NUC…

Streacom built a case with 4 massive aluminum sidepanels, only using one panel for cooling the CPU and (if you buy the kit) one panel für cooling the GPU. I really dont understand why they are not 'activating' the other two sidepanels for double the surface area...

You should have replaced the fan with a pentier onto the gpu heatsink to keep this build passively cooled as the nature of this chassis concept.
