Algebra - Absolute Value Inequalities

  • Absolute value is always positive, so why not take a lesson from it and always be positive too? Absolute value inequalities are somewhat challenging, no matter how positive you're feeling. We investigate bifurcation and other scenarios. Good energy for this lesson, YAY MATH!

    I LOVE that the kids were so engaged!! This teacher makes the students LOVE to learn and it makes it so much more fun to learn with them.

    Sir, you are an excellent math teacher. I'm 17 and home schooled and am about two or 3 years behind. I am living and breathing math every day. Videos like this makes it fun and easier. Just remember when you teach simplifying each step is the best way for us to understand it. Your helping a lot. Home schooled kids like my self have to self motivate to learn everything. You sir make it look easy, but you do go a bit fast. But there's a pause button. Thanks and keep educating.

    The square bracket means "include" that number. The rounded parenthesis mean "don't include" that number. I hope this helps!

    I Hope you read all of this but I just would like you to know that you are an AMAZING TEACHER and I wish you were a college professor. I am a freshman in college and I really struggle with these, well USED to .I watched this video once ! and I understood immediately. I love how fun you make math because believe me I HATE it. Noone is able to explain it . Your Little Helpers are sooooo smart haha. Cheers to them ! && Kepp it up ! P.S If you could do discriminate property that would be awesome ! Thanks again

    That means your lines are extending from 8 to infinity (positive infin), and your other line is extending from - infinity to -5.

    Hmmm I'm not so sure about the problem starting at around the 22 minute mark.
    |5x| < -7 does have solutions. It's either 5x < -7 and 5x > 7 which simplifies to
    x < -7/5 or x > 7/5

    Open means that on of them is greater or less than and not equal to. Close means that they are greater or less than or equal.

    I like how you teach math. My younger and I actually understand what math you go through. Right now, we are on absolute value ptoblems. It makes sense now. I do have a question about the ones where all real numbers are the answer. So, you don't have to plot the two points that you get when you solve the two equations?

      The last inequality, when he subtracted 10 from both sides, the sign should have flipped right? since it was

      No. You only flip the sign when you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number.

    why did he not change the sign to positive 7 on the last problem? He kept it as 5x > -7. I thought whenever you change the inequality sign you have to change the number sign.
