Huge apology - I just a noticed that the tree we have labeled as Smathers has one side with the graft growth and one side with the seedling rootstock growing. The fruit was entirely on the rootstock side that pushed aggressive growth past the graft. The seed used for rootstock was a Redland white Sapote if I remember correctly.

I Love White Sapotes. Love them. Great Flavor. Perfumy, yes, but in a good way. Very soft. LOVE them....

I have 7 grafted varieties, all currently ready to pick in Melbourne, Australia. My wifes favourite fruit! Pick before they drop, be sure they are slightly soft, not hard. Peel, rinse and enjoy.

I like the background, outside tropical environment. Suits the fruit tasting.

Thank you! The downside is we have to make sure it’s daylight - we are usually working on the farm during daylight hours :)

On my suebelle the bitterness is on the rind/skin. Try using a potato peeler to remove the skin and just eat around the seed.

If you visit fruit and spice park, they have some ripening now, so you could taste one. I think it’s worth growing because of its unique sweet flavor.

If you felt dizzy after eating too many white sapotes, do you think that possibly all the sugar might have been fermenting in your digestive track, producing alcohol? That seems like the simplest explanation.

😂 For real. I had maybe two that were edible - picked early and not allowed to get soft - but they still weren’t great and had that funky taste as an aftertaste.

There is nothing in the skin that causes such symptoms.
    Atleast not in most people.
It could be a she's allergic to something in it which might explain her symptoms.
I have eaten the fruits all my life different cultivars I mean 1,000s of fruits and never had any issue, neither had anyone I know.
However I know someone who also experienced such symptoms (drowsiness) from eating Arrayan fruits, turns out the lady is mildly allergic to them.
Ps; the skin is edible on some cultivars. It's bitter on some others.

@@SulcataGrove The only way to know for sure is to eat an equal amount of fruit without the skin. It would also be interesting to check your blood pressure before and after eating the fruit.

@@Figaholics I’m thinking I ate an undeveloped seed. I’m not sure if the same toxins would be in an undeveloped seed or not. The effects were not immediate for me or the other other two people I know who had the same experience. Sadly, our Redland white sapote didn’t produce fruit this year. I’m definitely not giving up the fruit, but will be more careful when eating a lot of them, and hopefully won’t have a similar experience next time. It’s such a delicious fruit. What is your favorite variety?

    • @Figaholics
      @Figaholics 3 года назад

@@SulcataGrove I have a hard time picking a favorite, I like most of them a lot. Redlands has been very good as has been Lemon Gold, Walton, Leroy, my own seedling which I named Delta Gold, Malibu #3, and Rainbow. Unfortunately, my trees were planted too close together and some get shaded out a lot so I have started new trees which I plan to plant more in the open.
I don't think one undeveloped seed would make you super sleepy, studies used larger extracts than that, I think. But I do wonder if too much sugar can be more than your body can handle. As I get older, I often find I can't stay awake after a big lunch.
