Hey James
To me, Kano was the most entertaining character in the movie, the actor really nailed their portrayal
Same, but I thought kabal was funny too
U AGAIN!?
He felt like they ripped him straight out of the game which I love
@@NathanielJGaw dude Kabal was awesome, I love his mafia accent
Really shocked how much I liked Kano especially cuz I absolutely hate him in all the games I seen/played

Like Kung Lao said that was his Flawless Victory…
Only thing I'm not particularly fond of in this movie is the arcana concept, while I applaud writers for having the guts to try something new even with established series, whether what they try works or not, the MK universe just doesn't really need an explanation for the powers each person has because we've always been able to accept that the characters just HAVE those powers
Agreed!
Simply writing in that because they are marked for Kombat they are gifted abilities. Always how I've seen the powers for humans. These guys are fighting monsters the playing field needs levelling
Yeah but I think it’s for newer viewers who haven’t played the games as much
I adore that scene where Kano goes to jump over the leg sweep and then goes,
"Oh Fuck."
“That the only move you know, mate?”
that made me love kano even more in the movie
Every players' reaction to leg sweeping spammers XD
@@cameronfield7313 ok
I literally won so many rounds against my siblings with that move. They wanted to kill me, but it wasn't my fault it was the only controller move I knew AND it was hella affective 😅🤷🏿♀️
Everything Kano says in this movie is hilarious and him going “oh fuck” after getting juked out on the third spam slide had me cackling
Same hopefully they bring him back in the sequel
@@xxshadowdevilx527 they will but with the metal eye
I read this comment in a australian accent for some reason
I think it’s so funny because it’s exactly what anyone would say. You know it’s coming and there’s nothing you can do about it. Just accept your fate and fall
Yep the only good thing
I'm pretty sure Jax's Arcana would just be enhanced strength, but since he had the mechanical arms, the Arcana augmented them that still granted Jax his enhanced strength while giving his arms a much needed upgrade.
This makes a lot of since. I thought the exact same thing to the letter lol
But wouldn’t that just make the rest of him strong since the metal arms aren’t technically him? I mean I guess this is the best explanation out there but it still makes the whole arcana concept seem dumb.
@@Platinum400 my guess is that the Arcana's have some form of self awareness depending on the user. In this case, it sensed that the arms had a ton of more potential than his natural body.
Aw man I wished it gave him the ability to become comically large as a little call back to his MK3 fatality where he becomes a giant to crush someone with his boot
Yeah, pretty much it worked around and upgraded his arms, since they’re metal- and to fix up the Arcana
24:41 honestly letting someone else take the fall for him is something Kano would do
I also commend him for respecting his stunt double. Those dudes don't get enough appreciation
method acting
He went all out even being born australian was his preperation
My theory is that Jax's Arcana was super strength, but since he lost his arms it compensated by upgrading his metal arms
This makes way more sense
No it dosent. Its just the typical my child is under a car i need to save them bull lol
@@Nemissis4265 you realise that made no sense and people can move large amounts of weight with adrenaline, what did you mean to say.
I'd would've thought it was armored skin focusing on his arms. But the living armor turned to machinery when he got his metal arms.
This is a perfect example of why you don't 🤬with perfectly good lore to do something "different"
You get nonsensically magical, self enhancing, robot stick arms that can never be explained....
People give actors a lot of credit for doing their own stunts, but honestly I appreciate Kano’s actor’s opinion on it: if the stunt actor can look better and be safer doing the stunt than an actor can, let them do their job! It’s what they’re there for.
Exactly! Tom Cruise doing his own stunts works for the movie because he's good enough at it to give the director more options for shots and angles without hindering production. If he sucked at it and demanded he be allowed to do it anyway, despite it hurting the production, nobody would think that was cool or okay. Actors who think in terms of "what does this do for the movie" instead of "what does this do for me" are undoubtedly the best to work with.
Danny Trejo refuses to do his own stunts, because if he gets injured, then he can't film any scenes, and if no filming gets done, the crew don't get paid.
@@Kat-nd5fqbased
@@Kat-nd5fqMachete realizes we come for his voice, charisma and intimidation.

I love how Kano is played by an Australian actor, it added lots of funny moments in the movie.
makes sense seeing how the majority of the production crew is austrailian, including the director
Kano,Klaw(From Marvels The arms dealer in Black Panther),Captain Boomerang(From DC Suicide Sqaud)...
They look like they were all played by the same actor... TV
You can thank trevor goddard (1995 MK film's kano actor) for that. He was english, but played kano as aussie. Ed boon and the MK team liked it so much, they've had him portrayed as austrailian every iteration since. Great performance by josh lawson too, obviously
@@mike91mdk45yeah, up until the first movie Kano's back story was the he was a caucasian boy raised in China by the Black Dragon and like in the movie he started as a member of the Earth Realm team.
@@mike91mdk45he didnt mean for it to be Aussie, he went for a cockney accent but then when people told him it sound like he was doing an Aussie one. He double downed
18:14 I was expecting something along these lines “Cole Young finally triggers his arcana and believe it or not, it’s golden plot armor.”
And to answer the Jax arcana thing, he would still gain super strength regardless because MK9 he has super strength ability pre arm rip from Ermac
Imagine it was the old mk3 big jax
I absolutely love how strong they made Sub Zero in this movie. He was literally unstoppable and it took a team of Cole and Hanzo and to finally take him down!
Yeah but they made Gorro too weak
Subs is straight up a slasher in this movie and I'M HERE for it.
@@OG.Trippster yeah I admit they really should have made Goro stronger.
@@OG.Trippster Probably because the effects cost a lot tbh, same with reptile. But at least they look great.
@@michaelgarcia5680 I feel like he should've been taken down by multiple people at once, kinda like SubZero
I really liked Kung Lao in this especially his “Flawless victory!” part after he kills Nitara, he’s also not a douche in this version.
He is my favorite in the series I am upset he was killed while lu and other dude just watches but eh lao was killed in the games cant be helped
.....he was the goat of this movie
@@xxshadowdevilx527 yeah.
My guess is that they're gonna do a thing where they have to fight a corrupted version of lu Kang in the sequel.
Kung Lao was actually the straight man out of the pair in the original MK lore. Have no clue why they changed his personality in MK 09.
Kung Lao? More like King Lao. Because yeah, I loved him in that movie, favorite character honestly.
"Hanzo finds Bi-Han, and though he doesn't speak his language, both of them are fully fluent in kickassery" that was hilarious 😂
Despite how farfetched the movie is to being canon the whole setup of the story, actors and choreography was still amazingly put.
You and the 71 people have to be on some sort of drug because the story was a nothing but disrespect to what mk is, the choreography is horrible for a Mortal Kombat movie, yes the fight scenes should be the one of best out of all the movies because it’s is a MORTAL KOMBAT movie, they extremely slow, the Movie “blood and Bone” staring Michael jai white has far better fighting choreography, I put no blame on the actors only who ever tf played cole, his character is a Big F**k you to Mortal Kombat
Dead Meat's channel is literally going to be a learning concept in the future when filmmakers try to make a horror film. That's how much dedication James has put up in these kill counts.
As if Hollywood directors ever listen to actual fans.

I like how Cole literally has Plot Armor as his power lol.
🤣🤣don't do Cole like that
if you think about it its kinda like the mcu black panther armour, that absorbs damage and distributes it ether in an force push explosion, or in this case gives you a power boost
@@wdp1a73r I kinda compared it to the thing I the game as the more hits you get, your power bar fill so you can do a power move. Idk if that makes sense but I remembered that so it made sense to me, but I did want some Scorpion adjacent weapons
Ahhh! Can of Coke to you!
i think the arcana works the exact same way as a stand arrow/requiem arrow, the stand arrow gives you an ability depending on the state of your soul/personality but the requiem arrow gives you an ability depending on what you need in that EXACT moment. Liu Kang and Jax are perfect examples of both principles
Where is that from?

I went to the open cast call to be an extra in this film, and they also filmed many scenes just outside of my workplace. They had camera rigging and lightning setup inside and blacked out all our windows to where they were shooting. I got to watch them film a car crash scene though. It was pretty awesome haha

I know many people complained about Kabal's design being closer to his design in MK11

I was disappointed that they had him here as a straight villain.

I hope he eventually can cover the Terminator franchise, in a podcast before he said the first film felt horror-inspired but most roots in action.
See he’s also said that he wouldn’t mind someone else doing kill counts for action movies.
I would love a knives out kill count
I actually kinda like the arcana thing. I like to imagine that it was invented by the tournament holders to make the fights more entertaining. And the Jax arms thing can be explained by: it’s what he needed at the moment to be competent in a fight.
My theory for Kano is since Sonya stabbed Kano in the eye in MK2 Kano will come back with his iconic metal plate eye

Holy S**t, The Miz as Johnny Cage would be hilarious and cool at the same time.
Honestly I really liked Raiden in this movie, mainly because he wasn't as forceful as he was in MK11 and the second half of MK9, but more gentle like he was during MKX
I did _kinda_ like this movie, my biggest criticism of it though is that they actually made Bi-Han responsible for Hanzo's family's death instead of being framed by Quan Chi
I really love that in the games because Scorpion as to keep the guilt that he aimed his vengeance at the wrong man and was working for his enemy all along
They'll most likely retcon it in a future sequel
Or maybe it was Quan Chi the whole time
You gotta remember, since this franchise deals with time travel. They can alter the writing and still make it canon to the overall story.
in the old games sub-zero was the one responsible it wasn't until mk9 that he was framed
In the games it also looked like it was Bi-Han who killed the Hasashi family. It was only revealed later that the culprit was actually Quan Chi using magic. So it very well could be that the Bi-Han we see in the opening isn't actually Bi-Han.
Kano absolutely steals any scene he’s in. He’s hilarious to the average viewer but he’s 10x funnier to any Australian watching purely bc of how culturally accurate his dialogue is, he just sounds like a slightly drunk brickie at the pub on a Wednesday night
Hanzo Hasashi fight with the Lin Kuei ninjas was insane to watch. Of course the fight with Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion is easily the biggest highlight of the movie. I love re-watching this movie a lot. Plus I'm glad Jax's Arms are more real here then the 90's movie did.
This movie has me rolling with laughter, deep shocked oohs, and wtf's. I really hope they make a trilogy at least to get everyone some screen time from the games.

Hello
Same
Absolutely loved this film. This and The Invisible Man 2020 are the only two films I've ever watched twice back to back.
Ditto
I think Lamberts Raiden was perfect for the movie. =D And he was a fantastic guy off camera, buying the others food, and financing some of the project.
What is awsome is that they did call backs to 5 of the characters fatalities, kung lous at 17:15 from mortal kombat 10, shang tsungs soul suck fatality from the first mortal kombat at 19:54, Jax’s at 20:41 from 9 or 10 (not sure which one I get them confused sometimes), liu kangs at 21:36 from 10 and scorpion’s at 25:35 from multiple games.
Now that’s dedication to the source, it’s annoying as hell when films try to add their own interpretations (like the explanation of everyone’s powers but still) to the movie.
I love how Kung lao says "flawless victory" when he actually has one from the games, unlike the classic movie, where Liu Kang says it for no reason
Pretty sure Liu said it in the original film to mock Shang Tsung. It did sound pretty sarcastic and harsh the way Robin Shou delivered the line.

Thank you James, for wearing the, "Get over here!" Outfit.
Loved this one. Sure it had it's flaws, but considering it had just over 1/3 the budget of the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie (without adjusting for inflation), I'd say it turned out pretty damn good. Cole was definitely the weak point, but it's hard to blame the actor since, like you said, the character was a studio demand. He basically did the best with what he had, so I can't even be mad at him for it.
Here's hoping the movie's success at least prompts Warner Bros. to give them a bigger budget and a little more freedom with the films to come. With everyone they had working on this one--everyone, cast and crew alike--you know there's some fantastic potential to be brought out once the checks get bigger and the amount of studio meddling gets smaller.
What do you think of James's wish for the Miz as Cage?
Mortal Kombat fits as a movie franchise/trilogy, it has good characters and potential so I’m hoping for more

He needs to. The last MK kill counts were copyright striked due to its inclusion. So he remade the counts with him saying it to get around it
Honestly, this is probably the best mortal kombat movie. This remake adds a lot to the franchise. No character is really wasted in this movie. Every ounce of screen time they get, they make it count.
Plus the fatalities are actually fatalities.
The first movie and the animated movies are better by a long shot. The characters sucked in this movie (mainly raiden and cole young)
1995 and Snow Blind are the best MK movies we have, Scorpions Revenge is eh, and the others, including this one, are awful.
20:40 not going to lie I laughed in the theatre a lot in that scene
I hope there's a way for Kabal to return. He was the most badass looking out of everyone, only Sub-zero and Scorpion were close, but Kabal looked better hands down. And for how well he was done, we didn't get anywhere near enough of him, was so disappointed when he died. no one is ever truly dead in Mortal Kombat, and they can do. alot with Kabal considering he's a bit of anti hero, heck the modern games have him as a straight up good guy.
As someone who doesnt have any nostalgic attachment to Mortal Kombat, I really enjoyed this movie!
I have a lot of nostalgic attachment to the series but I also still enjoyed it! If the PS2 era of games didn't turn fans off, then this shouldn't really be that bad to them.
That’s honestly the only way you *can* enjoy this movie.
the 2 replies above are the duality of man
the movie was enjoyable only reason it got hated on is because mk Zealots didn't like how simplified the plot is, and they just like to compare 90s as better while i liked both,

So I actually just got this movie today on Blueray, and after watching it and the bonus features I found out something pretty cool that I'm actually surprised that you forgot to mention James.
When you brought up Joe Talsim (aka Sub Zero), and how he was so skilled in martial arts and so fast that the crew had to ask him to slow down just so that the cameras could actually pick up what he was doing, you didn't mention that the Director mentioned that the only other actor in film history who had to be asked that for the same reason was Bruce Lee.
Wesley snipes i believe was asked to do the same in one of the blade movies, but that might be hearsay
@@culchieman1995 I agree.

@@TheBolg he mentioned the being asked to slow down, but james didn't mention that taslim has that in common with bruce lee
Pretty sure Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif had to slow down in John Wick 3 too, though I guess the director really did not mention it
I love how Jame's is wearing the mk1 costume really bring out the nostalgia
I will say, while I really don’t like the arcana thing, I do like how Cole unlocked his. Thematically, anyway.
It really tied in Hanzo’s love for his family from the games. Even in MK11, he talks about them and how much he misses them, it was nice connection to have Cole show similar feelings so explicitly.
I wish some else had attacked them, though. Maybe Kintaro or Jade since they weren’t particularly powerful, but they would have still posed a threat to normal people. That way, there would have been the danger without having Goro die.
Having them somehow establish that cybernetics was a thing in this movie Jax's arms and Kano's eye would have made better sense. Kano as he got his power and was using it could have slowly burned his face to reveal the metal like the original mk I Kano.
Facts, I was waiting for it to melt away to the metal as a result of the lizard scratch. Key character design missed but ig atleast he was still Australian 😅
Theory: Since Kano got stabbed in the eye by Sonya, I think he might return with a cyber eye if we end up getting a sequel.
Fun fact: Jax Brigg’s actor is the brother to Billy who’s most known for his laugh in Double Toasted’s bad movie reviews, which James and Chelsea was interviewed by, which was quite the interview given it involves two of my favorite channels (Dead Meat is still #1) 😁
The tournament is coming actually, James. It's planned for a trilogy:
This one: Pre Tournament
Next one: Tournament
Final one: Post Tournament
I love that plan, I imagine the protagonists are like this, the second one will have as many people wanted Liu Kang as the protagonist to fight Shang Tsung and Raiden as the protagonist in the third movie to fight Shao Kahn in the invasion of Outworld
Your really just joking right mate..lol..
The set up is one of the biggest turn offs for me honestly. It feels like a prequel to a movie that hasn't been made yet.
Since this movie did come out in 2021 they did confirm a second movie in development which I can’t wait to see
I wish reptile had more than a two minute fight scene.
The one thing they could do to fix the Arcana is if in the next movie we run into someone (hopefully Nightwolf)with powers but no marking and find out they just massively help unlock power, but aren’t the only way.
That would make a lot of sense. Like the marking is a shortcut or something. Everyone has *something*, but only once you know it exists and actually try to unlock it. The marking is the Elder Gods basically going "Hey you! You need to do something about this tournament."
Dang it; you actually just made me a fan of this film. The special effects work behind the scenes and the amount of authenticity and love that went towards the landscapes and lore are reasons why this movie shines. Much appreciate your enthusiasm and fellow MK nerdage, James!
I thought the story was wonky but damn the fighting made me so happy
As a kid MORTAL KOMBAT! was the only thing I played so seeing the movie is SICK
I'd love to see Bo Rai Cho in a movie one day! He was my favorite in the game because he was a drunken mess but very skillful. He is Master of the Drunken Fist after all
I loved this movie, probably one of the only movies I've watched at home and didn't touch my phone. It was goofy but kept me entertained throughout and had plenty of great kills and gore. I get why people may not have liked it but it worked for me.
It’s the second movie I’ve seen in theaters since quarantine
Joe Taslim is incredible as Sub-Zero! I would love to see James cover “The Raid” since it has such incredibly awesome fight scenes and messy kills!
or that The Night movie! I think it's gory enough ya. But James has faced prior issues covering Netflix's movies...
Both The Night has comes for us and The Raid had like the most brutal kills for a Martial arts movie
He was so wasted in this movie. I remember hearing how he was too fast for the rest of the cast, that interview told me how shitty all the fight scenes with the other characters would be.
When I heard Hanzo yell "Get over here!" I lost my mind.
"Jax loses his second amendment rights..."
I can't.
That joke is so bad it's AMAZING!
I’ve seen worse, like in “Soviet Russia, right to arm Bears”
A movie doesn’t need to be perfect to be great. This was such a blast to watch and was honestly way more than I expected, I loved it.
It was pretty lackluster. Esp considering the old one is better and over 20 years old
@@lightup6751 But lacked blood and actual fatalities.
Sure, the 1995 movie has its appeal, but the lack of graphic violence was a turn off for me personally.
And as proven by the Max Payne movie, toning down M rated material for a PG-13 audience will only make things sanitized and boring.
@@mattc2306
Thats a very selective and oversimplified statement. Just because a movie is less violent doesnt make it a bad film.
Every Disney movie’s source material was violent and full of gore yet the Disney films themselves became more famous than their source material could ever imagine.
My point is that toning down the violence doesnt mean the movie will automatically suck.
And fact is the 1995 movie made 122 million box office on a humble 20 million budget. Its pretty much the most successful video game film of all time. Mortal Kombat 2021 made only 86 million on an unbelievable 50 million. The movie was a borderline flop.
Take into consideration how much 120 million of 1997 are now and the two movies are dimensions apart.
I agree that the violence was missing. Hey, I mean its Mortal Kombat. Gore is their hallmark. Im totally with you on the violence missing in the original movie.
But overall the old movie was so much better.
The acting, the atmosphere, the sets, heck the dialogue of 97 writers was cheesy but it fit its theme the 2021 lines made the characters feel so out of place. The acting and dialogue felt so unlike their original characters. Especially this Raiden compared to Lambert.
The whole arcane powers was completely made up and gave off Power Ranger or Superhero film vibes. It really didnt fit MK. Unlocking powers. It was similarly awkward when Johnny Cage in MKX out of the blue after 10 games and 15 yesrs found an explanation to his green kicks. Because the writers didnt know how else to explain that Cage would be able to beat Shinnok. Forced, lazy. Then back in the 2021 movie after Lao died the last act where they all randomly go into 1on1s felt so forced and like an excuse of writing the end. They went into this made up white space dimension by Raiden, made a spontaneous plan and then with no explanation somehow ended up dueling the enemies they wished to fight. It was a mess.
It says a lot about a movie if its 2021 remake felt poorer executed than a 20 million budget cult classic from the 90s.
Im convinced the movie would have been a success if they would have made it a 6 film anthology, create a multiverse like the MCU and for the first film stuck to Scorpion and Sub Zero’s origin stories. Like the interlude of the movie was amazing. It started to get bad the moment Cole was introduced. Scorpion and Sub Zeros clan feud tho. Fans would have loved it, people unfamiliar with MK intrigued and they did nail the actors. Those guys played their roles beautifully.
At the end of the day its just opinions.
But to me its reasonable to say that the old movie was much more “Mortal Kombat” than the 2021 reboot. Minus the violence, which was better in the latter. But again, violence wont save a poorly written, acted and directed film. But thats just me.
@@lightup6751 Fair enough. But I personally thought the 95 movie was also pretty dumb and ridiculous with character inconsistencies.
And I know that Cole is a weak insert character for the 2021 movie, but I didn't mind him nearly as much as Alice from the Resident Evil movies. Plus, I'm glad that the new movie acknowledged the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub Zero rather than making them silent minions to Shang Tsung in the 95 movie.
That's also why I liked the animated MK Legend movies, since it tackled plot elements that the old 90's cartoon couldn't adapt with kid gloves.
And sure, violence doesn't automatically make a movie better. Hellboy 2019 is am example of how not to adapt the source material into a half-assed reboot.
I'm not saying that Mortal Kombat 2021 is a perfect movie (it certainly has its problems), I just like it better than the 95 film.
And even still, I wouldn't consider MK 1995 the "best" video game adaptation. I think the Sonic movie from two years ago beat that by a landslide, in my opinion.
I just like the movie
16:03 LOL
I just saw the full movie and it is hands down the best mortal kombat ive seen. Fights and cast were amazing and the kills definitely got my attention
The casting of this movie was on point, damn
"GET OVER HERE!!"
Kano killed it from beginning to end, and you look dope in Scorpion's tunic/getup, I'm really looking forward to MK2 with Johnny's debut.
I wonder who could be Johnny Cage
@@miketrapper0464 my thoughts too, I’m thinking the Miz or Scott Adkins!
@@AirbenderHawk interesting
@@miketrapper0464 either way, I’m patient for a green light to the sequel, I’m hyped for a new MK trilogy!
@@AirbenderHawk me too
Wouldn't' Jax's arcana be the same, just over his regular arms instead of his metal arms
Either way thanks for all of the good work you do on this series and enjoy ya'lls break
Idk the worst part of that scene is we saw that boulder about to directly hit sonja from a high fall, the he lifts it off and she's perfectly fine, fuuuck that.. If that was any of the other characters they would at least be messed up but no not sonja.. Can't have the blond girl get really injured.. It also pissed me off that the family was ok at the end after being totaly frozen.. When did movies become scared of killing off family members??
@@mullaoslo Seems accurate to games were they can take anything.
@@mullaoslo there’s more than just that
@@redrex1208 uhm the others clearly got injured and or died when shit happend to them
Kinda like in annihilation
Omg I love Kabal's look in this he has always been my go to fighter in the games
Heres some things i noticed about the villains "deaths", It was never revealed or shown if Kabal had his burn marks which results in his speed in the game, but due to the Arcana ability, that could result in his burn marks, Kano getting stabbed in the eye could result in his Mechanical eye, Mileena in the games had multiple clones made of her, the one in the movie could also just be a clone.
