I never went to art school either I was self taught as well, and I have sold over a thousand painting s God bless you. It just goes to show if you have the desire to create something that you learned on your own it's more rewarding then going to art school. No degrees so what . It's your talent and your skill you learn on your own. Makes it more enjoyable.

I love to see the process and how you do the different values, just amazing. And I like that you saw that it just wasn’t for you, the blue tint background, and was determined to take your time, correct it to your liking and move forward in your work. An amazing video Carley!!

I loved the tones background...and I always find it amazing how dark you're able to get. Gosh, you must go through an insane amount of the darker pencils because they are a lot softer...well, at least mine are, obviously I can't speak for you :) but it's so cool to see it start to come to life. And the realness(not a word I'm sure😊) of how you draw a line or 2 but stop and really look at them to either analyze or agonize over each one...I'm not even close to your level of talent so I'm more in the agonize over every line area...im sure you're much more comfortable with yours and are just taking you time to make sure it what you want. Bit seeing the process is always cool.
I also am forever amazed at what blending and shading do...its absolutely my favorite part when I'm drawing!! Because at first, when I lay down some areas of shading with my pencil, it, to me, again, just my personal feeling for my stuff..I see that first go and it is just pencil lines and looks more like when I was a kid drawing...but then when I get to blend it out and it looks smooth and blends into the rest..then boom...it suddenly looks so cool and alive :) art, all types of art, are just always so amazing to me and make me very happy even on days, like today, most days now, when I'm in so much pain I could scream....but watching gorgeous art being made by you and other awesome artists on here is wonderful and helps me stay super motivated and inspired for the days or moments when the pain lessens and some energy flows in and I can have some fun too!!
So thanks, as always for sharing your work and your life Carly :)
And I'm happy you got your table set up!! I'm sure you'll be way more comfortable. When you were kinda squatting down my whole body was like "oh my gosh it hurts it hurts!!" AaahaHhahaa but, that's just my own body freaking out!!😆🤣😆 but, definitely glad you're able to work however is comfortable for you :) and so brave to have fixed that entire background replacing the blue you didn't like...im pretty sure my shaky hands would've been like "ok, we're doing good...we're doing good....oh dang, just swiped through her face!🥺" but that's just me🙄😆🤣
Anyway, thanks again and I hope you're doing well!!! :)

Amazing piece of art. I loved all the various techniques used in it. Watching the rough pencil strokes getting converted to smooth beautiful shades using brush is one of my most favorite and most relaxing things to see. While you work mostly in grey and black the quality of artwork add many colors of happiness to all art enthusiasts. I liked how light strokes of pencil were used on cloth in crosshatching technique. While pastel was removed from the artwork I really liked the blend of two mediums. Drawing you're working on looks very precise, sharp and perfect so far so really excited for its completion. You're doing great work. Keep it up 👍

love your work Carly, excellent control , beautiful tones. the end result is very satisfying--this is what we want from "graphite artwork" (if we call it that), not photorealism which I am very skeptical about (Dylan Eakin especially) . just love it, well done.

I'm curious; you are using charcoal powder to draw/paint on a large sheet of watercolour paper. You first activate the sizing from the watercolour paper by wetting it with wide brushstrokes. Then you apply first layers of charcoal. I presume that activated paper sizing "grabs" the charcoal particles and you don't need to fix the charcoal powder with fixative for a while? Do you add any binder to the charcoal powder later on?

Hey Carly. I am a recent subscriber. Love your work and approach. One thing that really tickles me is that you wear white tops. I always think you must get covered in charcoal dust. While watching you blend your work, and having watched several of your older posts, have you ever tried using make-up sponges for blending. They are great for charcoal and graphite. They have a strange surface tension that seems to push the medium about in such a different way. I assume they sell them in Australia. Have a great day.

Have u ever thought of printing an A4 bw copy on office paper and retouching it with graphite just as an in-between stage of work, before going to the big one...? Only curiosity.
Your technique is... beginning with charcoal powder in a wash of water... and final retouches with very soft graphite pencil... is it, or am i wrong at some point...?
    Thanks for your attention.
