The Finals Just Changed FPS Games Forever

- The Finals is the newest free-to-play FPS game in a long line of FPS games. The question is, can it stay and go toe to toe with the likes of Apex, overwatch, and Valorant, or is it doomed to be an early grave like Split-gate or Halo Infinite.
For Business Inquiries Couch.Co-op@intheblackmedia.com - Игры
I hate that Quake isn't mentioned in the history of FPS lol
Halo as well
or Unreal (Tournament) '99
When someone mentions Half-Life and/or CS over Doom, Quake, or Halo when talking about the history of FPS games, you know they're about to say some hot garbage.
agreed@@drmigly
Unreal trounament that brought out the very game engine this is made on
Just started The Finals yesterday and I'm still cautiously optimistic about the implications this will have for tech-driven design. The consequences for creatives in the long term are, unfortunately, likely set in stone at this point.
Also slot machine noises gun shooty go brrr
Yes, I wanted to call it like it is on the AI front. As a creative, it definitely has some stipulations I'm not a huge fan of, but I also think it's inevitably like it or not.
@@TheCouch-Co-Op unless there's some sort of massive backlash. I can't see the average consumer going to bat for voice actors unless it's, like, CDPR AI'ing Keanu and he raises it as an issue.
Y'ain't gonna find too much solidarity in the Gamer™ crowd, either. Dopamine chasing jingle-keys kinda beats out any sort of longer term implications on the industry. Citation needed obviously but watching consumers accept worse and worse deals (sub for online, mtx, lootboxes, "u don't own ur purchases", etc.) over the last couple decades probably had me jaded there too.
Bood bideo tho G. Thank.
@@FalsPals when was the last time a backlash won against time itself? Replacing people with AI is not pretty and feels bad but it's effective and not illegal so bound to become more dominant.
@@voorachter2733 it's not that it's necessarily illicit. The main concern would be the fact that generative AI has an incredibly limited notion of context (ignoring copyright issues, training bias, etc) . Generating content this way with limited oversight, and with progressively less oversight as the tech/gaming sector layoffs will likely encourage means the likelihood of, like, "AI Slop" making it's way into consumer products more and more ever higher.
There might be some kind of middle ground that permits corpo cost-cutting without sliding down a slippery slope towards creative bankruptcy but it's arguable that the trends in content generation/delivery and the behaviors it incentivizes likely won't result in this.
Dopamine go brrr
Good stuff, Gregor. The finals is a really good time with friends, and going off of what the devs have done so far, its looking like its going to stick around for a bit. Small but meaningful updates sprinkled in between bigger updates, rather than other games dumping content every few months then leaving it to die out.
I'm excited to see where the game goes. Thank you!
Love winning, hate losing
I've completed the battle pass at around 100 hours and I honestly expected that I would stop playing after that, but I've actually ended up playing more. I play quick cash, sometimes with friends and sometimes alone. I have never touched tournament mode and I'm not really interested in becoming "the best" at this game.
The thing that keeps me playing is how often I see the unexpected. Using grappling hooks and jump pads to unlock completely unique traversal across familiar buildings that are now blown out jungle gyms is a lot of fun.
I'm not very good at FPS games in general, I typically have a 1:1 KD or lower in most games. But this game actually lets strategy play a real part in winning. I will keep playing it.
Couldn't agree more. Perfect balance between sweaty and laid back.
I'm a casual player but I'm slowly worrying about losing that it takes the fun out of it. The game is highly competitive even in Quick Play mode. But I still have a great time playing it even though I'm terrible with aiming (my KD and win/loses ratio weighs more towards the right lol).
got bored of it after 2 days, I just find it frustrating, too many broken advantages, like invisibility and having no chance against 2 on 1 encounters. The chaos around loot boxes. May try again later, but I prefer plain old battlefield still. I would love if the finals had a basic shoot em up battle royal mode as the guns and combat feesl excellent and running after loot can be frustrating. I feel it needs to be tweaked now that people are figuring out ways to kind of take advantage over less knowledgable players..
@@Greybellprobably the the main thing that keeps me from being frustrated is that winning, at least in quick play, doesn't have that much to do with the xp you get. I don't know what the break down really is, but this is a game where you can get a ton of xp just by playing. Of course winning is fun and losing can be frustrating, but the xp model takes the sting out of it for me.
i once won a game of quick cash with 5 kills total on our team vs a team with 30 kills vs a player on the third team with 30 kills... strategy is a much bigger part of winning than being a methed up murder monkey and that's why i keep playing.
Running through a multi-story building that is toppling is really fun. It adds a cinematic quality and is just genuine fun. Hopping between falling pieces of building...it's worth it's own game mode.
Not only did you fail to explain why this game changed everything, you also failed to convince me you understand how game development works at all, let alone for this game
He did not even mention other games with destructible environments: Black (2006), MineCraft, Earth Defense Force, Katamari Damacy, etc
@williammessick99 I'm actually surprised by how memorable and ahead of it's time Black was, one of the most memorable games of my childhood
@@programmersurfdudedid he even mention siege? He used to main that game.
I feel like this video was a waste of time just like every other "THIS ____ JUST CHANGED ____ FOREVER" clickbait. I knew what I'd get going in and still fell for it because my friend sent it to me. I'd never have watched it otherwise.
Yeah I feel the same, I don't see any point in this video that will actually "change fps games forever" or that is very innovative.
Fast paste action : ok seen it,
destructible environnement : ok seen it,
movement : yeah dude did you heard about apex and fortnite and every other BR that came out the same year or two,
Nanite ? yeah dude UE5 is very nice but we're talking about the whole entire industry getting that into their hands and it's not specific to the finals at all.
Server side calculation : that is cool but that's not even a big deal for this kind of games because we're not in a very heavy load of interactions and simulations and item persistence like DayZ or Tarkov where it actually hurts performance to calculate a lot on the client side. The "it's a blank canvas" argument, yeah just like every micro transaction free to play selling you bunny skins what should I be excited for here ?
He must be loving this game and it's great that some people gets a refreshing feel out of it, but I don't feel like this video or the "it will change everything" take was meant to exist.
I'm honestly just gonna sit back and observe, if the finals doesn't drop off into the abyss like splitgate did then I have faith in it's influence sticking
one of splitgate’s major downfalls was releasing the game on consoles and pc at seperate times. it was over a month after the pc launch that consoles got the game, and consoles arguably held the largest potential playerbase being a halo-like arena shooter, and then halo infinite was kinda a nail in the coffin.
I feel worse about what happened with Battlebit Remastered, honestly.
what happened with battlebit remastered?
@@SaltSpirits
@@SaltSpirits What happened with Battlebit? was it the price?
cheaters, bad choices by the dev, toxic community, questionable moderation practices are a few things I've heard of people being put off of Battlebit. I played it for maybe 20 hours before dropping it entirely. @@KickSilverOMG
This is an amazing video. The effort and production behind this is fantastic! Can't wait to see more
Thank you! More to come soon.
Great video, G. Can't wait for more vids on this channel. Tried the Finals for a bit during the playtest and after launch. Didn't seem like my game, but I hope many look to its success and learn the right lessons
I agree, I think the industry is poised to do some interesting things thanks to Embark.
Is this Gregor who played and talked about Siege?
I played Siege for 2 years and admired his videos that showed his experience, knowledge, intelligence and the use of hard words that I couldn't understand as someone whose mother tongue isn't English 😂
I LOVE the finals and am amazed as grateful that it's free and runs on my old PC.(Thanks to you, I know why now)
I only play it now and I am coincidentally finding content creators for many other games I used to play are playing it and talking about it now, content creators for games as different as Dead by daylight!
It feels like a reunion of gamers and a much needed rebirth of fps games.
I'm so happy with this game and the attention and admiration it's getting and hope it lasts long.
I thought I was the only one that noticed lmao
I think it was Battlefield: Bad Company that solidified what I want out of FPS games. Environmental interactions like destruction. The Finals seems a bit too fast paced for my liking, but the game still interests me and I might play some more someday.
Battlefield's in my DNA. Old CRT TV in mom's basement with my friends after school.
@@TheCouch-Co-Op That was a bit before my time, but I bet it was a lot of fun. I guess Siege is my version of what you experienced, playing after school and having lots of fun.
I agree the finals is trashy compared to bad company
Same here, way too fast paced....
And it takes an entire clip or more to get a kill within the game.
No thank you....
The finals is a work of art, and this video is a work of art too
Thank you!
Agree
As always, Greg, excellent job on yet another description video. Phenomenal edits, and I can't wait to see where you go with this channel. I'll be here every step of the way. 💪
On top of all this, they have an extremely responsive community team and they work with the devs very efficiently. It's been a relief seeing major issues be addressed in a matter of weeks or even days, instead of months
The presentation and reality check of what goes into a game like this was fantastic. Amazing video
Great video, however, the nanite part is kind of wrong. While nanite probably made the development process easier for the artists, it would have almost no effect on the possibility of the destruction part of the game.
The unreal engine 5 feature that did make a big difference for the finals is lumen, now lumen is sloooow, not something that should really be used for most games, however the finals, unlike most games can't really precompute/baking the lighting. Baking the lighting meaning you do an offline calculation of the lighting similar to how it's done in cgi/animated movies and storing that in textures, now, currently it's possible to either fully bake it or have the baked lighting toggleable, you can even toggle between what unreal calls lighting scenarios for if you have a day and night version of your map. But you can't really bake lighting if entire buildings can disappear dynamically, or they partially disappear, because if you use baked lighting then there are only so many lighting scenarios you can have.
And with the visual requirements of games these days, lumen was/is one of the few good options for good looking fully dynamic lighting. Now it's not like epic made some unbeatable amazing technology advancement, for three reasons 1. lumen is still just based on research papers done by other people 2. It's pretty much just a temporary filler between the future of lighting done "fully" (usually only partially, and then filled through denoisers and stuff) through raytracing/pathtracing 3. There are alternatives, although like lumen (being slow) they have their own trade offs, such as not being as physically correct or not as dynamic, but for example there is cryengines svogi and what The Tomorrow Children for ps4 did.
I really really appreciate all the work that went into video, best video I've seen to showcase the game.
i love how you implement your own clips, not like most people who do videos on games, you really did a great job!
This might be my new favourite channel for reviews
More to come.
This was an ad, not a review.
this video is just very well done. It's great to discover a small channel doing such an amazing job. Congrats!
What blows my mind is how high quality of a video this is relative to the subscriber count of this channel. Hoping to see your grow man, this video was incredible
I hope so too!
bro ong this type of editing i see in tv documentaries and stuff this a w
this stuff is a w*
@@TheCouch-Co-Opno hate, but take the criticism from other comments to heart. This video was close to being great, but fell short. Seemed like it tried to do too much and lost track of the point it needed to make.
THIS VIDEO LOST THE TRACK..ITS GOOD OKAY. but no one cares about sub to view ratio.. he is clearly not someone new. so whats the point
Hey G cant wait to have your videos from this channel recommended to me, i really enjoy the direction of this channel and how it gives you more flexibility with what you post!!!
my internet connection isn't great, and now i've realised why the finals is so much laggier than every other game. I have constant latency warnings on screen whilst playing. (i sit between 20-40ms on games like overwatch, csgo and fortnite)
Amazing production design for the video. Great Job! Especially liked the sound design.
I came back after watching this earlier because this video stuck out to me for its quality and presentation of its story.
And to my surprise, wow... this is the first video on this channel? I'll be watching closely for new videos!! This is good stuff!!
Wow just wow … this video was absolutely spectacular! Perfectly articulated and grabbed the scope of what this game holds for the gaming industry in the future .
Another aspect that has been long in the making is the "be a star in an arena game show"-theme. Unreal Tournament started out that way, but it wasn't really felt too much during the matches themselves. Then later Parabellum/HedoneTV/Bullet Run tried and unfortunately eventually failed, despite nailing the atmosphere.
The Finals doesn't yet reach that level, but with them using generated voices there's a lot more they can eventually do, with less hurdles.
Gonna be interesting in which direction they take future development.
Incredibly well made video, I am astounded that you just have 600 subscribers. You are making it big
That's the plan 💪

Genuinely this video was so much more than I was expecting! I came across it thinking it would be a pretty chill okay watch to pass the time, and I was served amazing editing and video production.
Fr an interesting watch, keep making vids, you deserve success :))) Half way through the vid I started installing the finals because of how interesting you make it seem (i did play the beta briefly but didn't truly wrap myself in the gameplay)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, well articulated mate. Honourable mention to early FPS games like TFC with multiple team battles, it's an aspect of The Finals I absolutely love.
Thank you, looking forward to making more.
this was a delight to watch and you have a real talent for this style of video, keep it up!
Holy crap that’s G’s voice I forgot about this after I subscribed to it
Nice video!
Loving the finals
And yeah I’d like to see them replace the voices with humans later, hell I’d pay money for my favorite celebrity announcer pack. But I do doubt it’ll happen…
Anything can happen!
This video is exceptionally good. I cannot express my sadness in seeing less than 1,000 subscribers.
Continue making fire shit like this.
We will. Don't speak too soon!

Appreciated.
Look there's something to it when I think that the channel I am viewing has over 100k subs or more because of the editing quality and the whole storytelling of the whole theme
but in reality the channel I am watching just started growing.
Really good Job Keep up at it!
Ive been having a blast on the finals. It definantly does so much different from other games and that's why its so popular. Btw the editing in the video was amazing, keep up the good work.
wow this video is a hidden gem. keep up the great work!
this is such a good video for a channel with 1 other video and 1k subs i love it keep it up super high quality ❤❤
Hey this video is extremely well-made I can't even believe you don't have 10 times the amount of subscribers, keep it up bro you kept my attention the entire 18 minutes and 45 seconds
really nice video about finals. I like the flow of the game and the gameplay, I'm curious how it will evolve
This is an amazing video and I am very surprised it has so little views
I didn't know anything about the tech of the FINALS. But while playing over the last month, I've just felt that it was different than any other shooter I've ever played. I couldn't explain it, but I knew it was. This video justifies everything I've thought about the game. It's the first game I've played in the last 5 years that feels like it was made in the last 5 years. Amazing what can happen with a team of people who actually care about a product.
Also, great video dude. This was a great watch.
Thank you man! Breaking down the tech was the most fun part.
A truly immersive and very intresting video Greg, keep up!
Sent this to my friends to convince them to test the game, they haven't even looked at a trailer and already says it's bad while I'm here having the most fun gaming in a while
Fantastic writing and editing man. Well done
My boy skipped halo
That's a 3rd person shooter not a fps
Great video, keep working like this and you'll be large in no time!
It’s a game that finally brings (for real this time, not with a scripted animation) something new to PvP videogames: map destruction. I don’t care if they used AI or not, they had the balls to innovate and they must be rewarded for that, many beloved and awarded developers have stagnated with the same game for generations.
Was just in solo bank it. Last place, and in the final seconds killed 2 guys at a bank, deposited and won. Whaaa
I just started playing, and my god, I love this game so much. It's brilliant - haven't had this much fun on an online FPS in so long.
likewise
Surprised this channel only has 885 subscribers. You earned another one.
Great video, gorgeous commentary and editing. Definitely subscribing
Thank you!
Did you know also know every other FPS game in history never has the same match
He means the map and situations. I’ve definitely learned where to watch in CSGO from playing so much. I KNOW where the enemies will come from. In the finals I have no idea where or when. I also could never predict how the building will destroy around me. The destruction of the map is a massive part of the game.
@@Lazer-yi6qg I mean that's just Battlefield Bad Company right there

The Finals showed me, a 30yo gamer dad who played every big online FPS games on its respective era since the late 90s that its not that i can't take multiplayer shooters anymore, i just couldn't find one that strikes me with the same sense of novelty that i felt decades ago with Counter-strike 1.5, Unreal Tournament, classic Call of Duty games and even Apex when it launched.
I thought that i was "too old for this type of game even if it loved it to death before" but i'm loving the game so far and i've been playing for a while, there is some balance issues here and there but overall i got many exciting matches and winning them always feels like i deserved because i played my class well/strategize better than the other teams.
As a bad company 2 veteran. This warms our hearts and makes us ever so much more proud of these legendary devs that gave us these treasures.
Oh yeah, forgot about this channel lol. Vids looking good! I've been searching for a game to replace siege, even if just temporarily, because for 2 weeks I literally couldn't connect lmfao. Great video dude. I haven't had this much fun gaming since the first time I played Bad Company 2

I remember Goldeneye on the N64. Thets where i personally got my love of the genre. I've been hooked ever since and have played many of the fps on the list in this video. THE FINALS is by far one of, if not the best, the fps game that's come out in recent times. I'm so excited to see how far the game and the esport goes. This game is truly what the genre needs at the moment imo.
what I've taken away from the finals is that it is like Battlebit with more of a focus on COD like gameplay. I'm not sure if that's the way to put it tho.
I don’t know if anyone ever used to watch the science channel on cable, but this guy sounds like the narrator from how it’s made and I love it
Just because of the quality of this video I was expecting to scroll down to see hundreds of thousands of subscribers - well here is one more towards those hundreds of thousands.
This game probably wont go anywhere but im just gonna sit back and watch for now

The best the finals video I've seen thus far. BFBC2 was my first multiplayer experience!
Please keep this channel alive, I love it so much
We plan on it.
the comparision with the finals and rocket league was spot on in my opinion . I play rocket league often and never stoped playing it. it is just fun unique and creative . I played other fps games apex-cod-cs-valorent stuffs but didn't find the element fun . but i am having a lot of fun playing the finals recently . it has that magic . you can do what you can imagine , alot of choices how you push and defend objective. the chaos is just too fun and the game play is not repeatetive. this game will problally stay with a loyal player base just like rocket league. both games has very high skill ceilling . players gonna evolve to new play style and tachtics . the meta will be too diverse . hoping to see how this game ages

Red faction had great destruction. I had no idea the finals ran server side. I need to re-download that game and pay more attention to it.
dude i cant tell if his voice is ai or real
the whole video sounds like a IA generated hype pitch for a board of shareholders
You forgot to mention the old arena shooters that most likely heavily inspired the atmousphere of this game: The Unreal Tournament series and Quake III Arena.
Both of those game franchises are literal arena shooters, in the sense of arena shooters. They displayed their respective game worlds as giant spectator sports that take place in specially made, enclosed arenas, much like what the Finals does.
Was a great start on the topic with some good insight. Someone seriously messed up the compression, specifically the makeup gain on your voice and so it dips in and out weirdly which makes an rather unpleasent effect. It has nothing to do with your voice just the processing. Maybe this feedback helps. If you need more pointers on audio compression let me know.
@10:25 Is exactly what every single one of my teammates are doing when I'm fighting for my life on the objective.
I feel like the narrative of this video lacks direction. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but the implications the game has for the industry felt like they weren't explained as cohesively as they could've been. Loving the new channel and direction though G!
Beautifully written. Great job!
This game is a dream come true man, i remember being so hyped for crackdown 3 when they showed off their detailed destruction and that just ended up being bullshit, so seeing that idea being fully realized in some random free to play game is just crazy but the game overall is like a masterpiece
Yes the modularity here is crazy.
a lot of possibilities, that's a rare thing in gaming world nowadays, thankfully games like baldur's gate, the finals, and some others just do it anyway
Every video on the channel besides this one is unlisted?
As an Overwatch player I see parallels between the games to some extent... I felt like my Overwatch skills translated really well to The Finals... I, as a tank main, really like that you can compensate aim with game sense to some degree in both games... (sledgehammer ftw) Also they literally added Mercy beam, Rein hammer/shield, Sombruh stealth and Winton bubble to the game lol
The technology is amazing and I love the gameplay. The issue for me is that, without having perfect internet, the fluid movement and smooth physics is shattered into a jagged mess. I love the game, but sadly I’m unable to play it.
