      Hello, Deano!! I think it is a good-looking model, but I am not experienced enough to know if it properly captures the current version of the Scotsman, so it is folks from the UK who will let me know. So far, reviews seem to be good, with some little bits- but that is expected. No one ever gets it all exact. Hopefully it will shine on the stream today!

    That’s a great looking Green locomotive you got there and with real impressive sound functions. Bear in mind that this locomotive have been on a world tour to both America as well as Australia so the choice of cars to run with it is quite brought - it looks really good with the reingold cars. So congratulations with this steamer in this nice green livery - since I recall that green locomotives are among your favourites.😉 Looking forward to tonights stream.

      Yes, the Scotsman has gone on world tours, so I can imagine it running on my layout. Either way, it is a nice model and makes my "Steamerpalooza" (Steamer Gala) complete- I can now run six full steamers on my layout. I just need some nice coaches for it. As you said hopefully they will release a matching car set.

    There are two major flaws with this model - #1 being the wromg color and #2 being the finish. The protoptype sports a glossy finish, which is meticulously kept shining, not a satin finish.

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  Год назад

      I think the two flaws are welded into one- to get a shinier finish, the color would have been lighter. This is, to me, the biggest issue. Although I find the color and paint job immaculate, it is not right for the time it is representing, and I agree. The model itself is exquisite, but the color is not right. It is beyond me as to how Märklin missed on that, they tend to be very meticulous. Perhaps they measured and photgraphed when it was in shop being refitted for its 100th and a final coat had not been applie? I do not know and only hazard a guess. I heartily welcome you and such an excellent point on this! Thank you!

    Hello Anthony. I have got the flying Scotsman, the Marklin one. I’d like to know, because I don’t have the Lima ho coaches, and they aren’t really realistic. LMS wasn’t operation when the MK1 coaches were made. I don’t have them, which coaches would you recommend, Marklin or any other HO manufacturer (budget:200$)

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  24 дня назад

      That's a great question, and I could not give you a definitive answer. How prototypical do you need? My friend Jim @Hovermotion put a rake of HO Post War German coaches together that looks brilliant with the Scotsman, but certainly not prototypical: ruclips.net/video/tyHwVOlSyv4/видео.html and here ruclips.net/video/D02OBH3GIgc/видео.html I am not extremely well versed in what the Flying Scotsman ran with, and some UK friends and a very knowledgeable Dutchman named @Ivo Van Zon suggested I get the Lima LMS coaches or even BR coaches. I used a couple sites which give coach information : www.british-ho.com/?fbclid=IwAR3plW6aJlSNHydLNae74yVGd48zOozFqX17PEZiO-Nc-ixOjbmMj3QR5xo and www.limabritishho.co.uk/LBHO-Coaches.htm?fbclid=IwAR1zBpgujW5j5BBjcLd_wQWrVqmOuVJ1KwgAtcFS1PZ9eWXW5p664YARDZw. Hi Anthony - greetings from the UK and thanks for showing this off. I live 1/4 mile from the east Coast line so I've had the opportunity to see the real 'Scotsman' pass by on a number of occasions (and cringe on hearing it's frankly feeble penny whistle).
    I've also seen the Trix 2-rail version in the flesh and it was a nice looking loco. When running at slow speeds you can hear the 3 'puffs' (1-2-3 1-2-3) you would get from a 3 cylinder locomotive (although some would argue that actually the puffs are in sixes) but the beat on your video sounded like it was getting a bit lost as the loco went at speed - in fact to my ear it sounded like it was not beating fast enough to match the speed of the loco - maybe this was just the sound quality on RUclips?
    Just a small probably pedantic point - in your commentary you mentioned the nameplate [sic] 'The Flying Scotsman' on the front of the loco - this is actually a 'headboard' and denotes the name of the train that the locomotove is pulling - in this case 'The Flying Scotsman' train which ran non-stop from London to Edinburgh and which would have been hauled by any number of other locos than 60103. The locomotive 60103 is not 'The Flying Scotsman' (as I've mentioned, that's the train) - the loco is more correctly named 'Flying Scotsman' as per the nameplates above the wheel splashers.
    This causes all sorts of angst among the purists over here!
    Just wanted to clarify and hopefully my info taken in the spirit that it's offered....

    It's a peach, I like it very much. It has all the features I could want in a steam locomotive. What Marklin have chosen to model on the loco, they've done very well. The brunswick green does look a little light but then I prefer that as it catches the eye a little more. Sound file is good and strong, whistle is spot on. I noted it starts off with a pronounced 3 cylinder beat but as it got faster I'm counting in 2's... I'll have a listen to the real thing.
    Smoke has a really strong fan which looks superb. They knocked it out of the park in my opinion.

      Hello, Andy. It is a great looking and sounding model. I would have no idea how accurate colors or sounds are... one steamer sounds like another to me. It is impressive to see folks who hear these things. I guess it is no different than when I can hear something wrong in car engines or things and no one else hears it. I think as long as the model visually is respectful to the original and does get things wrong, I will be doubly happy. Being the first foray into the UK world by them, they need to get it right. I am taking it easy with the smoker element, as I blew one out in my Class 18 Rheingold. I would like to see it steam more like my Rheingold or Class 01 Christmas Steamer do. Some folks complaining about certain lights being on, those are all controlled by remote. I turned them all on to highlight them... somebody thought they were permanently on. I talked myself into it a couple months after they announced it. Joyce gave me the stink-eye, lol, but I decided I wanted a UK train I could run on the main layout. They have not announced rolling stock, but I am hopeful, as they sold this run out, which means they made out well on it. Last year they released an iconic Danish model and this year, they released rolling stock for it. So, I am very hopeful. Right now, they are advertising a set of German cars as a nice match... but, at $600, no! I will just use my Rheingolds for now. Anyhow, it was great to see all the shots from Malta... what a beautiful place. Was it very crowded? I always get the impression Malta is crowded. Cheers to you!

I didn't think Malta would have a real off-season- being in the middle of the Mediterranean, but obviously fewer travelers after the summer holidays. • @ModelTrainOutsider

      There are always sacrifices to be made. Outside the gold special edition, I think details are roughly equal, but I think the interior quality of Märklin blows away what I have had of Hornby (and, for the price, it should). The piping was clearly too big and plastic, but in HO, it would be too fragile to go thinner, whereas that piping would look right in OO. The smokestack is the other controversy, but I do not think it is as bad a couple rabid fans say, and it clearly is done to fit the smoking element in. It is a risk to do a UK model in HO anyhow, as the Hornby, Bachmann, and newer companies dominate the UK product, so most North American and continental companies do not bother. However, a lot of folks in these areas would like some UK stock, but not in OO which may not work in scale or in tight platforms and staging areas. Now, add that many of us run HO in 3-Rail (the dominant powering system in northern and central Europe), and the chance to have ANY UK stock is nigh-impossible. So this was a small risk for Märklin. Most of my UK friends seem quite happy with it and the new visitors to the page seem more split on it- although some reactions may be more nationalistic pride than legit discourse on accuracy. Even OO models make compromises. Anyhow, I have babbled too much here, but thank you for peeking in and commenting!

    Thanks for putting the video together. I think you needed more emphasis on the fact this is a British outline model in HO scale - which means its pretty accurate. OO is pretty horrendous and the only thing going for it is that it exists. Most British outline modellers accept the inaccuracies of OO, a few go for more accuracy by changing the gauge to either EM or P4. A very, very small number of us model British outline in HO.
    I have the Trix version and until I can get some coaches will also be taking the Rheingold in place of my Roco Bavarian S3/6 (Later DRG 18.4). Chimney aside, it is the most accurate 16.5mm gauge British outline standard gauge model available.

      Hello and thanks for watching. It was a 20-minute video without going into all that. My "first impression videos" are more like a grammar/elementary school "show-n-tell." It's a grown-up way to say "hey, look what I got." I do not try to do official reviews- others do them much more thoroughly and better, anyhow. I am not schooled enough in the world of trains to notice that the smokestack is somewhat taller than the original. I bought this because it was the first UK-based model in HO, 3-Rail (AC) format since the 70s or 80s (when Lima and Fleischmann did some), and since our trip to the UK in 2022 and having so many model train friends and even fans in the UK, I wanted UK trains on my German layout. You are right, the OO scale on HO track throws things out of whack for models in the UK, but OO models are still cool (I have a DC Mallard, a Beatles Eurostar, and a Beatles 73 "Singles from Liverpool" train, and an Azuma. I run these on the floor on a couple loops during my livestreams, and sometimes with my grandson. The Beatles stuff was overpriced for the quality, but I am a Beatles fan, so stupidly paid for it anyhow. The Mallard is not great quality, but runs well enough. I love the Azuma. I am only 8 years in the hobby with no previous experience with model trains, other than I thought they were boring when I was young and never played with the one my father bought me.

    Awesome engine and review Anthony! I wish you would've done a size comparison between the Marklin Scotsman and your Hornby A4 for some who don't know the difference to see. However, the only Flying Scotsman model I "have" is a wooden Thomas toy from my childhood (released in 1999 when I was five) with the human face and double tenders, but it's put away at the moment I will get rid of it along with most of my other wooden trains in the future. I'm not going to be sad getting rid of it because I am really planning to replace it with a Hornby OO model in the future. Also, I had experiences of playing with virtual models of the Flying Scotsman from Trainz and before that, MSTS before I gave it away several years ago and the chugging sound from the Marklin model somehow reminds me of the MSTS one.

      I think they went with the anniversary edition as more likely to appeal to a broader audience. It is not out of the realm of possibility, even if unlikely, that they could do a repaint in another livery. They just did that with an American ES44 unit, which they released in Union Pacific yellow, but have now just announced a Kansas City-Southern version. This is a very odd choice to me, as it is a much smaller line, but the UP versions are selling out very quickly. Usually when Märklin do American models, they go for the big names, often Union Pacific, to have a wide sales base. Hence, doing the 100th edition of the Scotsman allows them to test a UK loco with the widest possible appeal. As it has already sold out its run from the factory, I am hoping it may encourage more UK HO.

      Replacing traction tires would not be advisable, but not harder than replacing them on any steam loco. Even though metal, like all companies, they use less metal... more alloy, thinner plates, so modern locos tend not to have the weight of those 30-40 years ago. They have to save production cost, as well as make space for the modern tech. Depending on one's take... it is either an acceptable trade-off, or a sign of how things are just not made the way they used to be. As a newcomer to the hobby, I am non-plussed about traction tires myself, but I respect veterans who do not like them.

      @@ModelTrainOutsider I’ve British steam locos made by Hornby and Bachmann, like 4472 so Pacific’s without traction tyres, plastic bodied and lighter than the Marklin model that can pull a full rake of coaches. Traction tyres will fail through use and leave residue on the track. Think Marklin need to move into the modern era with regards to that. Having said that, the DCC sound suite sounds great and smoke too! Would I have one? Yes, what id would run it with regarding coaches, goodness knows as no stick to match that HO size.

      If they did this in OO, it would be , well, OO. Which would be a shame. Finally a British 16.5mm gauge model that runs on the correct track. Agree with the chimney but now issues with traction tyres. Mine isTrix.

    • @ModelTrainOutsider

      Oh, there is no way it will make an impact in the UK at all. OO is too entrenched and other factors. The discussion is whether this might start US or continental companies making some UK models. A lot of guys on continental Europe have wanted some UK stock in HO. OO just looks odd on layouts in HO, although many North Americans and Europeans just do it to run some UK stock. The greater issue is for those of us who do 3-Rail and want UK stock, because, unless one buys old Hornby or Tri-Ang 3-Rail (which is not always compatible and is pure analog), there is nothing. Odds are this is a one-off, but if sales and demand are high, then maybe someone will try another... like Mallard or such. There is definitely a demand for UK stock in HO OUTSIDE of the UK... maybe this will be a small stone to start an avalanche.

      I think the color is the big issue, looking at comparative pictures. Fantastic loco, but the UK folks are split... some are hating it, some think it is quite nice. I have no dog in the hunt. It is a grand UK loco in HO and 3Rail, meaning I can finally run some British stock on my layout!

    I would say that the copper pipe work alongside the smokebox is far too heavy or to thick. And like CasetjonesNumber1 has already sad the chimney is hideosly ugly, it againlike the copper pipework is too large, it over scale. Did they not bother to do some proper research? They could have gone over to England a arranged to see the real locomotive, and got permission to take mesurments etc. And NO golden colours ever, the gold plated models are just stupid. No real locomotive ever had any gold parts on them

      Actually, Märklin did send a team over and do it. Some things, even in OO models versions have to be modified for production and display. Looking at the current stacks, it is not that far off, and might possible be to accommodate the smoker unit for safety regulations or such. No model will ever completely recreate the exact thing and certain folks will always find flaws. That is why I am enjoying hearing all sides, especially from UK modelers. I mean, let's face it, OO scale are flawed from the start using HO gauge track. Thank you for the feedback... just remember, I did not design nor make it, and I am not a "train/model expert." I am just a guy who likes to run model trains, especially Central European ones that I have ridden on in my travels. I never grew up with trains or paid attention to them until I was 50 years old.

      You can get very accurate replicas of anything, but when you scale down some shapes, they do not look right in the model. I’ve been collecting model cars for over 50 years in all scales, and some of the exactly scaled down versions just don’t look right.

    What an absolutely hideously ugly chimney! Where the heck did they get THAT from? Also, flashing red light on the front buffer beam? Only if running in reverse and there's nothing behind it (in which case there wouldn't be the two white 'express passenger' lamps on the buffer beam either - they are only likely to be there in the forward direction (other front lamp positions are possible, depending on the type of train being hauled). Unless Marklin produce any other H0 British rolling stock to go with this, really, what is the point of this model?

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  Год назад

      The flashing red light is not a permanent thing, I just turned on all the functions, so you could recreate it as need be. As far as the chimney/smokestacks, looking at some current iterations, I do not see them as being THAT far off, but purists will take note. As I mentioned to someone else, ALL models, even OO make compromises to accommodate design, safety and more. The stacks may be off to accommodate safety regulations for the smoker unit inside. There will always be something off. Märklin did send designers over and get measurements, and just like any model, for durability or design issues, certain adjustments are made. It is curious to see the reactions from my UK friends who range in their reviews from "excellent" to "great, but the stack is off a bit" to others who are completely enraged. That right there tells you. Let the rivet counter battles begin. Now, folks not of my channel are voicing views, which I also appreciate. lol Märklin is not trying to take over the OO market, they are celebrating a legendary loco on a historic milestone and answering a call from 3-Rail HO fans to have some UK stock, as the OO stuff is not 3-Rail nowadays, and OO is too awkward a difference on HO layouts. Many North Americans and Continentals do run OO (the 2-Rail HO guys, that is) because they have no choice. We 3-Railers do not even have that option, as it is all 2-Rail stock, except for older UK models.
      So again, the point of this model was 1. to celebrate the 100th anniversary of, arguably, the most famous loco name in the world. 2. (Possibly) To test the waters with a UK HO train (especial in 3-Rail, which Märklin is, if you didn't know). Whether additional running stock will be made available is unknown at this time. The model has sold out its production run which may inspire Märklin to try others. Some folks do just like to collect locos for display. As I mentioned, in both North America and continental Europe, there is a clamoring for UK. The continental companies like Märklin, Piko, Roco, Brawa, Mehano, ACME and others do make North American stock as well as European stock for their markets. The UK stuff has been avoided because it is assumed that only UK people want it and OO rules that market. However, on the continental clubs and forums which I am a member, there has been a desire for HO UK stock. Now, maybe some UK folks may have a "how dare they..." attitude, but Märklin is, in my opinion, testing the waters. So, the unit is not designed to sell in the UK; especially this one, as it is 3-Rail, but rather in the continental and NA markets, as they also made a 2-rail version under their "TRIX" brand name.

    The last time we saw an H0 scale British outline model train was back in the late 1970's, with the Rivarossi 'Royal Scot' and a couple of maroon LMS passenger cars. It bombed, mainly because of the odd choice of scale. British outline - 00 gauge - is 4mm to the foot, or 1/76th scale. H0 is 3.5mm to the foot, 1/87th scale. The two scales side by side look ridiculous. This model, whose UK price is as yet uncertain, is incorrect in a number of points, mainly with the choice of a dull paint-job. The real loco has a Rolls-Royce-like high gloss finish, as you can see on any number of movies here in RUclips. Not for me, thank you.

    • @ModelTrainOutsider
      @ModelTrainOutsider  Год назад +4

      I am familiar with the scale sizes- proportions and ratios. As I run Central European HO in 3-Rail/AC mode, it is usually not an issue. However, my travels in the UK had me pick up a couple OO trains which I run on the floor, as they are analog in DC/2-Rail and will not work on my train table. However, I would love to have some UK trains in 3-Rail on my upper layout, and this was a first in many, many years. Despite getting the color wrong as a dull coat (Märklin does not do gloss coats on any models for some reason, despite being industry leader). I think the smokestack issue is overblown (pardon the pun). In any case, it is a fantastic running model, and it is HO, so having an HO UK locomotive, especially the most famous steamer in the world, and having it in 3-rail/AC is all win for me. I am not trying to sell this to anyone. Märklin is not trying to sell to the UK market, as it is all OO there. They are merely trying to honor the Scotsman's 100th birthday and answer a call by HO enthusiasts around the world who want UK stock in HO, because, as you said, OO just looks wrong with HO. Many of us are hopeful that the sales (this has sold out at factory) will encourage more attempts... and maybe even get the color right. lol
