  • Melvin Jerome "Mel" Blanc (May 30, 1908 -- July 10, 1989) was an American voice actor and comedian. Although he began his nearly 60 YEARS long career performing in radio commercials, Blanc is best remembered for his work with Warner Bros. during the "Golden Age of American animation" as the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, the Tasmanian Devil, and many of the other characters from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical cartoons. He later worked for Hanna-Barbera's television cartoons, most notably as the voice of Barney Rubble in The Flintstones and Mr. Spacely in The Jetsons. Having earned the nickname "The Man of a Thousand Voices," Blanc is regarded as one of the most influential people in the voice-acting industry.
At the time of his death, it was estimated that 20 million people heard his voice every day.

This is why I hope Disney and Pixar go back to using random unknowns who are voice actors first for their movies. I don't get the point of using famous actors in their films if they're just doing their own voice. Voice acting is an entirely different school.

Back in the early 60s I met “The Man of a Thousand Voices” himself. My family were at a corporate childrens' Xmas party at Casa Loma in Toronto. Every ballroom, hallway and stairwell of this real live castle was filled with musicians, clowns, magicians and jugglers...and a quietly-smiling, unassuming man in a neat dark suit and a tiny moustache. He complimented my little sister, literally a "babe in arms", telling her "Ohhhh! What a tweet widdle girl you are!" She was unimpressed and a little shy but I was thunderstruck as he turned to me and offered his hand burbling (and slobbering) "And what's YOUR name young fella!" Tweety and Sylvester... in the flesh! My Mom says my mouth did not close for a whole week after!

Mel Blanc will always be THE Man of a Thousand Voices. Though they're have been quite a lot of other VAs with amazing range both during his time (i.e. Daws Butler, Don Messick, Frank Welker,) and after (i.e. Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Tom Kenny), I'm pretty sure he was the first to be able to do so many. Plus, he was the first voice actor to receive on-screen credit for his work. Just about every VA nowadays should owe it to him for establishing that trend.

Interestingly enough, Blanc *did* fill in for Arthur Q. Ryan (Elmer Fudd's regular VA) in several shorts, mainly for parts that Ryan had trouble getting right. The most notable case of this is in "What's Opera, Doc?": when Elmer summons typhoons, earthquakes, hurricanes, and smog, most of the accompanying lines are done by Ryan, but the final shout of "SMOG" is Blanc.

That’s honestly probably easier. If you can do an impression of someone else’s character it’s never going to be perfect so when one of your own characters, who you naturally can do perfectly, imitates someone else’s character it’s going to lean towards your own character which makes it sound like a realistic attempted impression and distinct from if the other person was doing their character impersonating yours.

That Daffy impersonating Bugs sounds perfect but Bugs just sounds like Daffy to me. Edit: Wait no, I can hear Bugs in Bugs now lol

A Canadian rock star, who voices two characters on My Little Pony did this recently as well. Rainbow Dash, voicing a mock-Applejack voice. That still blows my mind.

But Mel did... well, she would have to *also* do Applejack doing a Rainbox Dash voice. And both of that in the same scene.

Pretty soon some voice AI diffusion model will be able to let you sample a bunch of different voices like we do currently with stable diffusion / dalle 2.

Phil Hendrie does a recurring bit called "The Margaret Grey Players" where his characters imitate each other. The amazing thing is that it's improvised on the fly! Brilliant stuff! ruclips.net/video/MjBE3Jkit20/видео.html

Don't let this distract you from the the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy
scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High
School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson
High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds
against his old nemesis, Bubba "Spare Tire" Dixon.

Okay? They know you're not gonna turn around and go back. So they don't care. Who gets fucked? Oh, Leo Getz! Okay, sure! I don't give a fuck! I'm not eatin' this tuna! Okay?!
