Fear and especially panick is the worst you can do when on the sea. It is clear to see that you are very experienced. Well done.
John, this was still an excellent video. It just shows a day in the life of a fisherman. Good job keeping your head together enough to make it back inshore.
Great job in diagnosing the fault and getting yourself back in. Just surprised that you don't have an auxiliary to get yourself out of trouble if these issues arise. Keep it up with the good informative videos 👍
@@TheFishLocker Agreed that it causes a snagging hazard and I suppose that it may cause balance issues on smaller boats although this could be addressed with positioning of other items such as fuel tank etc. Personally I prefer to be totally self sufficient, especially if going further out to sea. Being an avid fisherman myself spending loads of time on our Ontario Kawartha Lakes, I do spend lots of Sunday evenings here watching your you tube postings and sure enough there was a surprise this weekend ! I do admire and learn from your fishing knowledge and seamanship and also the ability to get out of a pickle calmly. Most of us will have these boat engine issues and failures as I did one late night on one of our lakes and had to paddle to shore!. Being out in an open sea for most of your fishing trip I am surprised that you do not have a small " kicker" engine although I can see you do have a outboard engine bracket on your boat already. Be safe John !
Those engines are suitable in some scenarios. For my boat it negatively effects the balance and ride. Also causes a snagging hazard for pots and ropes.
In my 40+ years fishing salt water I have had to deal with multiple broken shift cables. Good job in diagnosing it. It got to the point that I changed the cable every 3 to 4 years just as a precaution.
Very informative and really enjoyable video. Loved the simple explanation of how to tie a splice. Having spent many a day out on a warrior 150 of a friend, the sound of the water slopping against your hull really takes me back. Thanks.
Well done that man! An unfortunate situation turned into a brilliant video which I'm sure will be invaluable to help anybody approach any problems afloat in the right way.
Shows you the difference that a bit of knowledge and experience does. I've been humming and arring about getting a small boat for the last few years. And I was advised by a few people that if I do see if someone with experience but maybe no longer the time or money to run a boat anymore and see if they would be interested in teaching me in exchange for free fishing trips. This made me realise how sensible that is. Within a minute of breaking down i would be trying to shout at the other boat while I wet my pants and weigh up if I can make the swim to shore (surely it's not that far) 😂.

I had a very similar issue while out in Falmouth this year...spent about 4 hours rowing her and then a nice couple towed me the rest 😆 luckily I was in the bay
Fair play John ,nice and calm , no panic. No need for anyone to go from zero to 200 for a simple issue that can be sorted by thinking for a second or two. When your boat breaks down as much as mine u keep fishing wile u fix it 😂😂. Good advice given by u 👍👍 spare a thought for a spare engine. I’m in North Devon and don’t go out without one as big waves can arrive fast and crossing the bar without a fast plan b can lead to trouble as anchoring would be more dangerous than floating out to sea. Great u show u get problems like we do. The times I watch u go out and I got a broken boat 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🦈

What would you have done if you were 40 miles out and it was getting rough? I know you wouldn't have panicked. Do you carry a small spare engine. When I was young and more stupid, I used to fish from a 10 foot dinghy with an old 2hp seagull engine with no clutch. That worked fine until I got my only anchor stuck and had to cut the line. Then I couldn't get the engine started. I was about 2 miles offshore. No radio. No flares. No one in sight. Took me 30 minutes to finally get the engine started, whilst shipping water at the stern. I was very lucky. At the time I had no clue how lucky I was. I was young and thought I would live forever. Be safe. Thank you John for all the great videos.
@@martincathcart-jones9607 - I would have done it all the same. Except I would have put a radio call out to any vessels that may be in the area just to touch base with someone in the event I couldn’t get the engine into gear.
Sitting watching your uploads reminds me so much of watching old Jack Hargreaves's on his out and about fishing adventures. It would be great to see a mainstream production company pick you up and see you on the TV. Good luck to you all
Tv has changed now. RUclips has killed a lot of it. I produce videos at a fraction of the cost with greater variety and 10x the frequency. We have been approached by a couple of tv groups in the past but they want us to align with their political narrative - and I don’t fit it.
@@TheFishLocker A big thank you for finding the time to reply. I just sit watching you and your days outs and so look back to watching TV and hear old Jack's commentary in same way as you do explaining what has been going on. Have a great Christmas with your clan.

I live in the village of Aberporth west Wales and this is by far the worst storm we have ever had, as I speak we still have no electricity and it’s estimated to be Tuesday evening before the power is back on. Your video has helped make that time seem a little shorter.
Good job John, eliminate all possibilities and find the problem through deduction after elimination. Glad you got onshore with no problems. So will we be seeing a wee 6hp auxiliary in the future, it's never a bad idea to have one mucker.👍🏴
At least it happened in calm conditions! My dad always used to say to me that you obly have 2 happy days when you own a boat. The day you buy it and the day you sell it!
Well I think you can be forgiven for a blank fishing vid John, instead we had a great tutorial on how to fix a boat a your explanation in everything you did or was doing was on point mate! Loved the rope splicing , I learnt this from an old skipper, really satisfying work that. Thanks mate , efforts much appreciated. Paul
Going to my summer fishing spots during storms is a favourite winter pastime of mine. Storm Darragh produced a monstrous swell in my area and the sea inundated rocks at the very back of the shore zone something I’ve never seen before. The waves must’ve been the height of a two storey house before breaking at a headland I fish. It gives a whole new perspective on the dangers of the ocean. The storms move sand up in some areas as well they can certainly alter the ground at your marks.
Well done John , we have all been there , you were very chilled about it , must be a week of it as Rob M in Salcombe had engine issues recently as well …
Great stuff again. I learnt to splice and all knots in sea cadets way back in the 70's! Still doing today. I done PTI course on base Portsmouth, instructor phoned my dad to convince me to join. Started working at local hospital so I didn't,i could have put you through the paces when you joined up.? Top man for not getting in a panic.
That splicing is amazing, I will have to give that a go. Don't really do boats (unfortunately) but do a lot of outdoors stuff and I am sure that technique will be useful in other scenarios.
Great usefull info ....i never took my boat to sea ,but remember well when i hit something under our boat in shallow water and my props shear pin did its job .! I didnt have a spare as i had no idea about them ! LUCKILY got a tow to our usual mooring . Your little vid and tip about manual checking the servo is and most likely will be a trip saver ...well done !!🙏
Well dealt with John. It is important for mariners to know the difference between a Mayday and a Panpan; any vessel hearing a Mayday (in range) is going to assist however they can as it is a life-threatening situation. Tight lines Bud. 👏👏👌

Sitting watching your uploads reminds me so much of watching old Jack Hargreaves's on his out and about fishing adventures. It would be great to see a mainstream production company pick you up and see you on the TV. Good luck to you all
Yes, we could do with a modern version of Jack on TV.
@ Which is fine, we can still enjoy your existing channel.
@ thank you and best wishes to you and yours for the festive season. 😊🎄
What a day at sea, John! Enjoyed watching you splice your ropes and sew the hole in your cage.
Thank you 😊
Lovely vid, John - thank you - there's always plenty to learn 😉 Things work out best for those who make the most of the way things work out 👊
I hope the video helps folks out. 👍🏻🎣
@@TheFishLocker You're an absolute gold-mine of knowledge mate - I wish you were my dad! James doesn't know how lucky he is😄 If you ever need a surrogate-Grandpa to come along, give me shout! 🤣 🎣
Still the only channel you can hit a thumbs up before actually watching the video. How lucky are you that your boat broke just in time to ask Santa for a new one 😉? Another good one mate, keep up the good work. 👍✌
Haha. If only it was that simple.
Top class very educational John outstanding. All the very best 👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴
Thanks James. I hope the video helps folks out. 👍🏻🎣
Hi John. Very interesting video. One of many reasons why I carried an auxiliary engine.
I hope the video helps folks out.
Sorry to see you having a trouble with the boat but a great video even though no fish caught this time. The ropework much appreciated!
My pleasure. I hope the video helps folks out. 👍🏻🎣
I live in the village of Aberporth west Wales and this is by far the worst storm we have ever had, as I speak we still have no electricity and it’s estimated to be Tuesday evening before the power is back on.
Your video has helped make that time seem a little shorter.
Crazy isn’t it
I can listen your education 24/7LOL,Merry Christmas to you and family🤗
Yay! Thanks John, that was great. I bet you can't wait to get out after the storms. Fishing should be on point then!
Hopefully.
Good job John, eliminate all possibilities and find the problem through deduction after elimination. Glad you got onshore with no problems. So will we be seeing a wee 6hp auxiliary in the future, it's never a bad idea to have one mucker.👍🏴
Not on this boat you won’t mate.
At least it happened in calm conditions! My dad always used to say to me that you obly have 2 happy days when you own a boat. The day you buy it and the day you sell it!
If it had been a rough day things may have been a little more stressful. 🤣
Great stuff. Some real knowledge shared there!
Paul
It’s a very useful skill to have.
I would be cussing up a storm. Your my role model. Thanks for the storm footage later on. Good show.
My pleasure Sammy.
Great video John nasty up are way too glad you got in safely 🎣🎣 some brilliant tips too
Stay safe bud. 👍🏻🎣
Amazed you had a broken cable John, let's face it the boats not that old!
It happens. And the boat is 14 years old.
Well done John , we have all been there , you were very chilled about it , must be a week of it as Rob M in Salcombe had engine issues recently as well …
It’s the time of year. Engines are sitting idle for periods. That’s when it happens.
Somewhere on the South West coast recorded the higher gust ever, 96mph. So you made all the right decisions for certain.
It was a windy one.
Glad all ended well. And you are all safe. Hope the other locals are too.
Great video. 🐳👍
It’s been a blustery one.
It’s a small world mate. Who knows.
I was lucky to be down Cornwall in June and Sennen was like a millpond ! What a contrast . Glad your Boat's sorted 👍😉🏴
Lovely spot isn’t it.
That splicing is amazing, I will have to give that a go. Don't really do boats (unfortunately) but do a lot of outdoors stuff and I am sure that technique will be useful in other scenarios.
It is a very useful skill to have. 👍🏻
Well played mate 👋Just shows the power of water.
Immense power
Great usefull info ....i never took my boat to sea ,but remember well when i hit something under our boat in shallow water and my props shear pin did its job .! I didnt have a spare as i had no idea about them ! LUCKILY got a tow to our usual mooring .
Your little vid and tip about manual checking the servo is and most likely will be a trip saver ...well done !!🙏
I hope this video helps folks out.
Another great informative video John, many would panic. Looking fwd to the next video 👍.
Thank you.
Well dealt with John. It is important for mariners to know the difference between a Mayday and a Panpan; any vessel hearing a Mayday (in range) is going to assist however they can as it is a life-threatening situation. Tight lines Bud. 👏👏👌
Agreed
Excellent video John :-)
Glad you enjoyed it bud.
