  • These are my zero waste essentials that I brought with me on a recent trip to California. It's very important to note that air travel has a high carbon emission and traveling itself is not very sustainable. That being said, we do live in the 21st century and traveling is often a necessity due to our global world. While zero waste hacks won't offset this carbon pollution, it is something.

    Don't fill up water bottles in airplane bathrooms. The water-in and waste-out pipes are often right next to each other, and it's possible for cross contamination to happen. The water from airplane sinks has been tested, and sometimes has very high bacteria levels. Not good for drinking!

      There are usually water fountains right outside boarding areas. I usually fill my bottle up, drink a whole glass, and then do it again before boarding. Usually lasts me my flight.

    For Flights I do have a silicone Bottle which cam be folded when empty. That's pretty handy when you don't want to use up so much space in your backpack. I fill it up in the airport and when it's empty again after the flight I fold it and it perfectly fits into my bag again.

    Great video! I would add a tiny bottle of liquid castille soap. (I fill a 1 oz or .5 oz bottle from my big bottle.) Since it's so concentrated, you don't need much, but you can use it to was clothes (or your napkin) and your dishes. It's made a big difference!

    when u go out and just whip out ur own utensils, do ur friends say anything or have they said anything?? Im very interested in converting to a reduced waste life and at school our utensils are plastic. I try bringing regular utensils from my house when I pack, but when I buy i dont have any with me :-\ having some in the front pouch of my school bag would be so handy but I get nervous about being judged, even by my friends.

      haha totally! I get a lot of questions. My close friends know by now and totally accept it. It was weird at first but now it's so normal it'd be weird if I didn't. I actually have friends that ask me to bring them utensils when we go places.

    Hi there! I was wondering if you could answer a question about living with a non-zero waster (perhaps this could be a future video?). I am in grad school, and my roommate and I get along super well, especially since we have pretty similar diets and food preferences. I have been wanting to transition portions of my life into being more zero-waste, but my roommate is not as into it as I am. How do you live with your roommate who shares some of your preferences (i.e. being vegan) but does not live a zero-waste life?

    why do you use a cloth napkin? aren't paper napkins recyclable, or bio degradable?

    • @Christylove222
      @Christylove222 6 лет назад +1

      Gina G yeah but it’s silly to use something once and throw it away even if it’s biodegradable or compostable. Those things use up a lot of water and resources to make, so it’s better to just use something reusable. Also, unless you’re composting or making sure they get composted, they’ll sit in a landfill and never decompose because they’ll be surrounded by plastic and trash.

    Flying is really one of the worst ways to travel ecologically. Would it be possible to pick other means of transportation? I understand if its not possible. For example: I want to visit relatives about a 1000 kilometres away sometime. I would prefer to take the night train there, but its not possible with a wheelchair due to unaccessible trains, and busses are generally unaccessible and sitting all night would cause me so much pain, so I feel forced to pick flying in order to get there.

    • @TheGirlGoneGreen
      @TheGirlGoneGreen  7 лет назад +1

      I avoid flying on most occasions. Unfortunately, there is no train to where I need to go and driving would be 24hr+ or impossible (overseas). I try to extend my trips as much as possible. For example, when I went to California on business, I took a train to LA to visit my brother. It's still very bad for the environment.

    Been a subscriber for a while, thank you for your videos. I'm curious about what you would say to a little situation/choice I have right now. I own a baby gear rental business out of my home. (For traveling families with babies so they don't have to bring all their gear with them.) My friend who does the same in a different city says she sells packs of water bottles too, and that families staying in hotels really appreciate her providing the bottled water when she drops off the crib etc. I personally don't use disposable water bottles nor do I want to encourage other to do so...but on the other hand I can see why a traveling family with little ones in a hotel would not be able to have gallons of drinking water with them...what do you think? provide the service because of the situation or don't promote plastic water bottles under any circumstances?

    • @victoriazwergmaus9813

      Bethany Baker just courios, whats wrong with youre tap water?

    • @bethanybaker7791
      @bethanybaker7791 7 лет назад

      That has nothing to do with my comment. Either you didn't actually read it or maybe English isn't your first language and you just didn't understand what you were reading.

    • @maeagwynethyusaku8977
      @maeagwynethyusaku8977 7 лет назад +2

      @Bethany Baker, I think what Victoria meant was that why couldn't they use the tap water from the hotel so it doesn't promote the use of plastic water bottles. Depending on where you're from, the tap water could or could not be drinkable. I do have a suggestion though if your tap is drinkable. :) Maybe she could give away a reusable bottle instead of a disposable plastic bottle so it's more sustainable instead? That way you provide service and not promote plastic water bottles.

    • @TheGirlGoneGreen
      @TheGirlGoneGreen  7 лет назад +1

      This is an added perk that you don't have to provide, correct? While I know families would appreciate it, I don't think you should if it goes against your values. Maybe the family also doesn't use plastic water bottles but now they feel obligated to because you gave it to them.

    • @bethanybaker7791
      @bethanybaker7791 7 лет назад

      Thanks for your feedback. I wouldn't be giving them the water. They would be choosing it, to purchase it from me along with the other services. So a family who was zero waste wouldn't select it. It's just be delivering it to families who want it and paid for it.

  • @uregr0ss
    @uregr0ss 7 лет назад

    Humans can never be zero waste because we still use toilet papers that is one use (unless you want to re use poop/pee paper ??) And even with bidet sprays, it cant completely get ride of the faeces simpply from water so cleaning with the paper is still needed.

    Keep your light colored napkins, you want to see when it's gross and needs a wash😊

      It could just be me! But I TOTALLY relate. Lighting is still an issue for me after 4 years and tons of different equipment, lol!

      I pray for sunny days! Sound has been my biggest issue. I finally got a nice microphone but now it picks up on sounds from other rooms. In this video, you can hear a hush from the laundry room.

    I like your channel a lot, but you should try to improve your audio, it's kinda annoying

      I'm working on it. It's my biggest struggle. I bought a fancy $200 mic but I'm still having issues.

      Just speak further away from the mic! It's not the mic's problem as it will still pick up your voice a little further away and will stop that grating feedback type stuff! hope this helps x
